Severe Threat
TORNADO WATCH FOR SOME OF OUR KANSAS COUNTIES... UNTIL 8PM. THIS INCLUDES:
ANDERSON
FRANKLIN
DOUGLAS
SHAWNEE
LINN
MIAMI
JEFFERSON
I thought I would get a quick blog in... while things are still quiet. This afternoon, we have the potential for some severe weather. A rapidly intensifying storm is heading right for the KC metro area. It looks like we'll see stronger thunderstorms develop after 3pm and the threat will continue with us through the early evening hours. Some of the storms could contain large hail early... then the threat will switch to damaging winds... and maybe an isolated tornado. This is IF they get going. The reason I say that... we do not have a lot of instability today... and temperatures are only in the upper 50s right now. If we had more sunshine and warmed a bit... it would be more likely. But the winds aloft are pretty strong... and that can be favorable for storms... so we'll watch it this afternoon. Here is the latest from the SPC:

**********************I
t lookks like the low pressure is falling farther south. I think areas around St. Joe may receive as much as 2" and the KC area, maybe a dusting. It's still a developing front. We'll see. My thoughts are we may get some snow in KC.
Gary,
Good call! We had a dusting in OP! :)

Is there a way to have a map with the counties labelled so when we have severe weather those of us that are not completely familiar with all the county names are able to see where the weather is in reference to our location?
Hi, Michael!
Thanks for posting! We actually do have a map with the county names on it. We try to show it during our severe weather cutins quite frequently. Did you get to see us use it after you posted?

I guess with this storm moving northeast we have no chance of snow... when do you see at least a chance of accumulating snow for k.c???
Kinley,
There are chances showing up, but nothing for sure yet.

Gary said to watch for extremely low barometric pressure tonight. Well, I am in Ray county just ENE of Excelsior Springs. at 9:48 PM my barometer is reading just a hair over 29inches but less than 29.1.
Shirley,
The pressures really got low. I will bet that we see more storm systems like this in the next few months.

I missed on My tornado Touchdown points by about 30 Miles. I guess I missed placed a decimal Point. (Banging head on Computer Desk) I tried really hard to get it right on the head. Forecasting exact Touchdown points is almost impossible. A lot of people are trying very very hard.
Steve,
Good luck next time!
