Here comes the warm up.....

Last Friday we talked about it being 60 degrees by Thursday and here it comes. It may go above 60 degrees either Thursday or Friday or both days. What is happening? The jet stream is deamplifying and becoming more zonal (westerly). This is going to allow the flow to come across the Rocky Mountains and then across the plains. As we go into Thursday and Friday this downslope flow (see map below) will bring us a massive warming as the air decends it will compress and warm. This is why we predicted near 60 over a week in advance. Other forecasts won't pick up on this because the computer models have a hard time predicting massive warm ups and massive Arctic outbreaks. The models were saying near 40, but we knew the likelyhood of 60 or higher was quite strong. This same thing will likely happen again early next week. In between a cold front will cool things off. We must watch a possible developing storm for Christmas, but it looks like it will develop right overhead or east of us which should leave us dry.

Gary,

I was wondering how long this warm and dry part of the weather pattern is going to last that you are predicting? I know that this was originally part of your first winter forecast when you predicted warmer and drier conditions. Hopefully, we can get a lot more snow next month. KCI has already received 11.1 inches for the season!

DEVIN:
It looks like this mild stretch could be a week to ten days. Enjoy it while it's here!

Gary,

I must say you and your weather team did a great job on that last storm with your predictions. You guys called while the other stations tuned their forcast just before the storm.

Thanks for the heads up,
Tim

TIM:
Thanks for noticing!!

January will be "wild".

Can that only mean storms, snow and/or ice?

Boring weather, same day after day, really get to me.

May January keep things interesting?

When you say wild what are thinking will happen? Are you looking possibly at ice storms which have become a norm for January?

Ann:
Right now it looks like the potential for snowstorms is greater than that of ice storms, but we can't rule anything out!

Gary,
When you say that you are expecting January to be wild, does that mean that we should expect another storm or 2 or like the one we had on December 7?

Mark:
The set up probably won't be exactly like Dec. 7th. But it will be interesting to see how the storms evolve and affect us.

I hope when you say that you are expecting, Jan to be quite wild I hope you mean a lot of winter storms.lol:) Last year in Clinton we did not get any snowstorms. We recived a total of 6 inches of snow for the entire season. Based on what you see now do you think that there may be a better chance down in the southern portions of the viewing area for at least one snowstorm this year. I hope we recive more snow this year than last year. Have you figured out the weather pattern based on your weather pattern theory. Do you have any indications of wether we are going to have a white Christmas? I hope we do I did not know that we usually only have a 17% chance of a white Christmas. I read this on the NWS website. I will e-mail my winter weather questions before the end of the week. That was funny when you got your dogs pictures taken with Santa Clause. I must warn you some of these questions I am going to ask you will be detailed. Just answer when ever you can and I know that you can handel my questions.LOL:) Merry Christmas and I will probably talk to you e-mail or blog you later on in the week. Tell everyone in the Weather Center I said Hi. John Moon III

John:
We are forecasting 26 inches of snow this winter... and there is the potential for another storm to bring accumulation snow to Kansas City in January. We will have to see how each one sets up to know how much snow the southern viewing area will get.

Gary-

With all of this crazy weather we have had thus far, what could January possibly bring? Is it going to be more ice, more warmth or cold and lots of snow? I would much rather have the snow. I miss the snow around here.

BTW-Have you revised your winter weather forecast again? I see the last update was Dec. 9th I believe but I thought I heard you say last night you were revising it again. I missed it unfortunately.

Brent:
We updated the winter forecast Dec. 9th, and last night we just showed it again. We're still going for average precip, average temps... with 26" of snowfall.

"I am expecting January to be quite wild." Gary

Please elaborate!

Chester:
This weather pattern means warm periods, cold periods and storms that will affect the KC area in January. It will be interesting to watch how things set up.

By wild, do you mean more temperature swings up and down? Or something like an ice storm?
-M.Toast

Yes... we are expecting mild periods, and also the chance of a few arctic outbreaks. We could also see another big snowstorm... it will be an interesting month.

lots of snow is fine but ice storms are not.
but then you just tell us what's going happen

crack staff you guys are on the money when the others are not I don't live in KC I live
in Sedalia Mo. Even for us you guys are the best.
THANKS KEEP IT UP
