Snow in Forecast
We may see a few light snow showers or flurries across the viewing area today. We are on the backside of a storm system... and we'll get in on the wrap-around cloud cover and associated light precip. We are not expecting any accumulations today. Here is a look at the surface map... you can see the storm is spinning in a counter-clockwise direction over Minnesota:

And you can really see the clouds coming in from the northwest, too:

Highs today will be in the upper 30s... Friday we'll be in the mid 30s with a mix of sun and clouds. And interesting to look ahead to the weekend, as Gary blogged below, a chance of snow is in the forecast! It's looking more and more probable... here is this morning's NAM... it really puts us in the zone:

Is there any real good sign of a white christmas
this year?
TIM:
Not a *real* good sign. In fact, there is a big warm-up forecasted for the days just before Christmas. HOWEVER one of our computer models has a cold front moving through over Christmas weekend... that could bring a little snow. There is not much confidence in it at this point... but... "never say never when it comes to weather". :)

Hello everybody-been a while-finals are not only stressful for students but also for their teachers!! Just a quick comment/question: I am very excited that we are on the brink of another chance at an accum. snow even if it is only 2-3 inches. 2 in a span of 10 days is awesome to say the least-do you think this gives us a sign for this winter? I have seen from the models that it is going to really warm up over the next couple of weeks (which should surprise no one-this cold spell has been nothing short of incredible and we are due for a 2-3 week span of above normal temps.) but do you think this cold spell will repeat itslef some time later when the pattern recycles? Even if not, if we do get 2-3 inches this weekend and then it turns warm for the remainder ala 1989-1990, this winter will be better than last and I really can't complain. Thanks in advance-good luck tracking this storm and heres to hoping it digs just a bit deeper and we get 4-6!!!!!
Bill,
I am hoping for the 4 to 6 inches as well. New data comes out in a few minutes. I will have my update at 10.

Question, what was that weird ball shaped snow that fell Thursday afternoon? What kind of weather conditions would cause that styrofoam shaped snow that fell so fast and melted so quickly??
Mike,
The strange precipitation last week was graupel. This happens about two times a year here in KC and it happened last Thursday. It was very unstable and the heavy showers formed the graupel almost like a thunderstorm produces hail. The snowflakes falling got caught in a swirling updraft and a few snowflakes got curled up into a ball and became heavy enough to fall as graupel to the ground. It is sometimes called soft hail.
