60s to Snow

Yesterday, much of the viewing area was right around 60 degrees before a cold front sweeped through, dropping temperatures.

We go from 60s to the chance of snow today!

A fast-moving storm is heading our way, and will bring light accumulations to the region. Freezing rain is beginning this morning. We are expecting that to mix with sleet and snow in the late morning/early afternoon hours... before changing to ALL snow by this evening.

By the evening commute, roads could be slushy or snowpacked in some locations!

The map below, from the NWS, has a pretty good handle on expected snowfall accumulations by tonight:

It *is* a tricky forecast, though, as we are starting off with LIQUID precip before changing over to anything that could stick. Right now, we are under a WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY... with a SNOW ADVISORY in effect for some of our Northern counties. Stay up-to-date on our warning/watches situation here:

NWS PLEASANT HILL

We will continue to monitor it as we go through the day, and Gary will have an update this evening.

I am a teacher in St. Joseph, MO and my students have a question for you. The precipitation that is falling here looks like hundreds of tiny styrofoam balls. It is not hard like ice but is also not like snowflakes. What is it and what cause it?

CHRISTI & STUDENTS:
Thanks for writing in! It sounds like you have some "graupel" on your hands up in St. Joseph! Graupel is basically small pellets of ice created when supercooled water droplets coat a snowflake. The pellets are white, not clear like sleet, and often are mistaken for hail.
Hope that helps you!

Thanks for keeping us updated on the storm! Your blog is the best... and most updated! Do you think it will really snow an inch in Overland Park?
Sara

HI, SARA:
Thanks for your nice comments! I am thinking maybe a half-inch to an inch in Overland Park. Right now you have just seen rain... but expect it to mix with and change over to snow later this afternoon.
Be careful on the roads today!

I am located in South Kansas City / Red Bridge Area... the Low seems to be tracking south of us along the Oklahoma and Kansas border, which usually sets us up for some significant snowfall. Why the lesser amounts? Not enough moisture... cold air aloft not cold enough... just curious.

I have to be prepared to plow our organizations parking lot if we get 2" or so and I want to be ready!

Thanks... Sam D. - Facility Manger @ Children International in South KC.

Sam,

It is where the upper level system passes, NOT the surface low which will always pass south of us when we are about to have snow. There are various reasons why we didn't get much today. The storm was just not very strong.

We have been getting freezing rain since 6 am this morning i work for the city street crew in Leavenworth and we have just sent our evening crews home for the night is our report write or do you see something different our models tells to expect this to keep up until about 1pm and then change to snow with 2-4 inches for our part of the area

Jerry,

How much snow did you get? You should call the Weather Center Company (816-455-7666)and use them instead of your models. They are hands down the best snow forecasters for snow removal clients.

I am at 115th and Nall. I get off work at 3pm and am driving 435 thru the Triangle, and then 470 to Independence. My co-worker is going up to Liberty also, realistically what is our commute home going to look like? Thank you for your updated weather and we all look forward to "New Data". Nice little catch phrase.

It looks like the circulating low may bring a brief unexpected band of heavy snow across the area between 6 and 8pm. The NWS radar is down in Pleasant Hill, but the Topeka Radar seems to be showing it moving our way, albiet a bit north. By the way, Gary's pics of your dog were cute.

Gary,

The band of snow fell apart and the storm went "poof". It was interesting though.
