« A Storm Tonight? | Main | FULL MOON »

Nice weekend, then what?

The weekend is here and thank goodness. It was a long week starting with the early week storm system.

Speaking of storm systems, the next one is heading our way and should arrive Monday or Tuesday. There is still some hope that it will come together and produce something, but at this time I highly doubt it. This storm did occur 55 days ago in our cycle, but it dropped in from Canada digging into an upper low over Kansas. We had a few sprinkles from that storm, and I expecting about the same out of this one, which may end up also forming from energy coming south instead of coming up from the southwest. It just has many problems and seems to be disorganized until it gets east of here. We will watch it closely, but hope is fading.

There isn't another storm showing up yet beyond this. Cold air is building in Canada, but not that strongly. I still am expecting the first half of February to get more active.

Have a great weekend.

I sure hope it gets more active!! This has to be the most boring winter of my life. You know it is a boring winter when my girls have hardly even worn there heavy coats.

I have been thinking for about 3 weeks now that we here could have a severe weather out break near valentines day. I beleive that strong long tracking Tornadoes could be part of that Out break. I remember about 20 some years ago Tornadoes occur in the later days of January. One near Pleasant Hill. At that time NWS was located at the Airport. It was also known as the National Severe Storms Forecast Center. Now that has moved and mergered with NSSL in Norman Oklahoma and is Now known as the Storm Prediction Center. It is on the campus of Oklahoma University. I need to go have a good talk with Dr. Bluestein about my Theories. I would like to attend the Severe Storm Workshop coming up soon. Maybe some one here in KC could put on a workshop. Not a Spotter Seminar, a storms workshop. The Spotter program is good but, for me it never did go far enough. Outside of Febuary I think that Storm Cyclogenesis will best east of KC and even better across the lower Mississippi and Tennessee valleys. Hey Folks the Storm Spotter seminars will be coming up across the metro areas over the next 2 to 3 months. If you would like to be a county storm spotter find out when your county is having a seminar and attend. It only lasts about 2 hours and its free. They teach you what to watch for and you report back over a radio what you are seeing at the storm site. It is a good way to help you learn about storms and how Tornadoes form.

Gary:
The low-level winds were amazing last night. I am a pilot and took the plane up for a sunset flight last night. On the surface, the winds were nearly calm to occasionally 180/5. Between 1000 and 3000 feet agl, the winds were probably 230/30. From Executive airport down to Hillsdale Lake, our groundspeed was about 100 kts. My airplane cruises at 130 in no wind. Turning back to the north, we were whistling along at 155, then up to 160 as we turned to the northeast to catch a spectacular view of the city lights. As I was landing to the south, I could feel the shear at about 800 feet.

How could there be SO much difference in wind speed across such a short vertical profile? Amazing...
