Slowly Rising Temperatures....

TODAY'S NUMBERS:
HIGH: 23
LOW: 7

Last night, clouds moved in pretty quickly. I raised the overnight low to 3 degrees for our 10pm newscast... but we didn't even get that low! Seven degrees was the official low at KCI, with most other locations reporting similar numbers.

So the clouds helped keep temperatures UP overnight... but they also held our highs DOWN today! We only made it to 23...

We will see downslope winds develop this week... that will bring us a warming trend as we go through the next several days.

There is still no big storm in sight... but a front moving through at the end of the week will bring colder temperatures just in time for next weekend. Speaking of NO precipitation in the 7 day forecast... here is a great viewer question:

This sure seems like we are in the same drought pattern we were in a couple of years ago. Is the weather community ready to go so far as to say we are heading into a drought?
Leonard

The answer is... by the looks of things now... we could be heading right in that direction. Here is the latest drought assessment by the Climate Prediction Center:

DRY, DRY, DRY!!!

This is a pretty BORING weather pattern... I have had a hard time getting excited for our show tonight. I have no inspiration! Thank goodness NASCAR is still on... we are going on late and I have more time to think! ;)

While there is not much going on for us weather-wise... Mags continues to grow like a weed! She has NOT liked the cold temperatures of the last few days. You know it's time to go inside when your dog does a weird little dance where she picks up her paws... it's pretty funny. Here she is at five months and 50 pounds:

She loves her rawhide!!

Have a good one!

What a beautiful girl! She is defintely past the butterball stage.

MARLINA:
It has been an amazing experience to watch her grow before our eyes!! She is also teething... and as a first-time dog owner... I was shocked to find little puppy teeth on my floor! ;)

She is a very happy dog, that's for sure!

She is a great looking pup and does look very happy. I hope you survived another boring weather day... looks like it will be like that for a while.

Have a good Week, Joe

JOE:
I am so glad I have a few days off to take a break from the dull weather. I know Gary enjoyed his weekend, too. :)

Jamie,

What a beautiful little girl!! I have a 7 year old Golden Retriever who LOVES the cold weather. When we got back from our walk early Saturday morning, he did NOT want to come in, he laid down on the deck for about 10 minutes! Goofy dog!! Enjoy your "baby" and a boring week of weather!

KATHY:
Thank you... I never knew a dog could bring so much joy! My parents definitely deprived us as kids... haha!

Mags isn't very fond of the cold, but she LOVES the snow, that's for sure!! Today the sun helped to warm things a little, so we all went to the dog park... maybe we will see you guys there sometime :)

I am very concerned that the current dryness predicted by the drought monitor for Central and Western Kansas is understated. Most locations have not received any moisture in the last three months and have been getting extreme daily temperature ranges. This is looking like a bad summer with the current La Nina pattern.

Devin

Devin,

It certainly does look dry for a while. But, the second half of spring could turn wet on us. I see some potential for a recovery in May and June.

Jamie, these blogs are great! I always felt that I was a freak because I get bummed out because the weather gets boring. But after reading your comment that your not motivated for the weather segment because of the same exact reasons.. I know I'm not alone!

A quick question though, In looking at the drought prediction, I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, but some of those areas have been in quiet an extended drought. What would be some of the causes of the drought? Would it be jetstream related? Or geographic related? Just curious..

Jamie is off for a couple of days so I will answer your question Dave,

There are likely many factors that play into this drought that seems to be growing. The weather pattern sets up in the fall and then cycles. Unfortunately the weather pattern that set up is a dry one for the drought regions. But, the same pattern could start producing as we move towards the second half of spring.

Jamie - Be sure to watch her weight - Labs often need (Parker is on) a weight control regimin (sic) - IAMS Large Breed Weight Control (1.5 cups per day)

Dog

HEY DOG:
Thanks for the info! Mags is still on Iams puppy food, and she does get a lot of exercise. I think we will do the large breed weight control once she is a year old. Do you feed Parker once or twice a day? We are still feeding her two times... am and pm...
Thanks,
Jamie

Gary et al:

I don't know if you recall, but back in December, I mentioned the word "DROUGHT", but that didn't really carry weight then - perhaps it does now - less than an inch in JAN-
FEB and only a mere amount in DEC - we are in for a SEVERE DROUGHT - it is my contention that dry conditions at the surface only excacerbate drought - low transevaporiation prevents borderline systems from producing rain, thus intensifying drought and so on. Also, when a winter season continously cuts off the Gulf, this often lasts well into or through Spring,as this storm-chaser has noted through the 15 years plus chasing he has done. Bottom line - DROUGHT and much more of it.

Given the fact that a majority of the years I have resided in Blue Springs have been lacking in rainfall, except for, sporadically, last year, is this a function of global warming? Though I know it is not proven, I believe it is. The more our head-in-the-sand federal adminisration denies it, the more sure it is we are headed for ultimate disaster.

I remain, sincerely yours,
The Dog

Storm Dog,

You make some great points. We'll see!
