Holiday Weekend

TODAY'S NUMBERS:
HIGH: 90
LOW: 71

In big storm news... the cluster of thunderstorms I talked about on the 10pm News on Thursday... did quite a bit of damage in Eastern Iowa. One person died as these storms produced tornadoes that damaged houses and even part of the University of Iowa campus! The one deadly thunderstorm cut a path from Iowa City southeast through the small town of Nichols. NWS meteorologists say there is a path in the Nichols area that is 4 to 5 miles long. That is where the one fatality was... a man and a woman were in a mobile home... and when the tornado hit, the home basically "disintegrated". The man was injured... and the woman died.

Parts of OUR viewing area could see severe weather as we head into the weekend, too. Saturday is another stressful forecasting day, as the potential is there for these stronger storms. The greatest risk looks to be north of Kansas City... but we really have to watch it. Here is the Severe potential for Saturday:

Severe 2.jpg

Keep in mind, there could be thunderstorms in the morning/early afternoon... then a break... and then another round of thunderstorms in the evening. But it is also one of those days where some people... may see NOTHING!! Very frustrating! Of course, we will keep you posted on the watches/warnings/etc!

Easter Sunday is tricky, too. As the low slides through... we could see a few thunderstorms (mainly to the northeast of KC) in the afternoon. Otherwise, expect some clouds and cooler temperatures.

Have a great TGIF!! :)

Hey as far as the real bad weather goes I hope not but if it does it does.I live in Sedalia and i think we've had our share. But i am also aware that some have had it alot worse we could use some rain down here. You guys are great... there are both good and bad.
You guys pass the test in my book.
THANKS KEEP IT UP
JIM

JIM:
Sedalia is in the "slight risk" for severe thunderstorms on Saturday... but the higher risk is to the north of Kansas City. We will watch it, and keep you posted through the day! Thank you so much for your nice comments...

Ah here we go! You never know what's going to happen until the time comes (grins). Just like you say Jamie, we could or we couldn't. The excitement of anticipation.
We'll be watching!

JEFF:
Exactly! It is frustrating to try and forecast for these events... as we have to wait till the DAY of to see how things set up. It sometimes feels like it's a cop-out to say that... but it is the truth.
Stay tuned! :)

Looking at the soundings in Topeka, looks like the cap is favorable. If the low drops at all south, this could be fun..but I suspect still the fun will be north and east of us. Still good dewpoints, mid level energy, and cape...we shall see.

SCOTT:
Although the models have us with high dewpoints... It just hasn't happened yet. Right now, we're only in the upper 50s... where the NAM would have us in the mid 60s. We should be pretty close to 60 this evening... so we'll see what happens. I also think most of the action will be north of us. Did you see they shifted the moderate risk farther north? We just have to wait and see if anything fires along that dryline... there is a good cap in place. It probably won't be until this evening if it happens.

I saw that the forecast has changed from isolated to scattered (30% to 40%).
Is there still a chance that we could see some action. It is more likely our severe weather will come from the dryline than the front?
Right?
Do you anticipate any watches to be issued soon?

BRIAN:
There is some thunderstorm activity trying to get going to our southwest... around Ottawa, KS. We will have to watch that. Some severe wx is going on in Nebraska right now... as expected. There is a watch there, and in NE Kansas. I think the strongest activity will stay north of us. But there is still the dryline potential.

The cold front will pass through Sunday... should pass dry. I will do a blog soon... I have been busy here today... computer problems... grrrrrr!

Hi Jamie,
When do expect the next update on the cap? I was going to do some planting and landscaping, but if it's going to storm I'll wait a bit.
We are also setting up for a neighborhood Easter dinner outside here on Fort Leavenworth. Do you expect any high winds to cause some problems for us this afternoon?
Janine

HI, JANINE:
Yes, it is going to be very windy this late afternoon/evening. We could see gusts up to 40mph! There is still a 30% chance of some spotty thunderstorms. There are some down near Ottawa, KS to the southwest trying to get going. Nothing severe, though. I have a feeling the strongest activity will stay north... but we still have to watch it!

I met a dog name Breeze on 12-24-04 at the Vets while getting drugs for my cat-It was one of those days with a car full of grandkids and kids and mom and I was dreading brunch-When I went into the the Vets office there was this beautiful golden retriver and I asked to pet the guys dog and he said Oh Yes! THis dog turn around and actually SMILED at me and the owner said "Breeze give the lady your paw and she did and then gave me another GREAT BIG Toothie SMILE--Well needless to say she saved my day, that I was not looking forward to. Then I found out she died 2 weeks later and I promised myself if I ever got a new pet I would honor her name for saving my Christmas in 2004. Please name your beautiful puppy Breeze in her honor****
