Severe Thunderstorms Tuesday? AND Windy getting shaved
My mom and stepfather came in for a rare visit this weekend and we had a great time. But, I had to go into work as we had another severe weather outbreak on Saturday evening. One strong supercell tracked right across I-29 and Barry road around 8 PM Saturday night and it almost produced a tornado in Kansas City. It did produce golf ball size.
We now look ahead to Tuesday. It is another very unique set up and this is somewhat different than anything else we have had so far this season. Below you can see the 500 mb flow and surface forecast for Tuesday at 7 PM. A cold front is just getting to Kansas City and this will put us in the developing area for thunderstorms that will become a widespread rain event well east of us again. We may have severe thunderstorms as initial development occurs near by. Can you see the ridge developing over Canada (look at the 500 mb forecast). This is a very important feature that is now developing and will be a major force in our weather over the next 10 days. Hopefully the flow will break underneath in the right way and we will have some chances for rain. It will be a battle between being cooler and dry, or cooler and wet. More later today or Tuesday.

... your dog hates you now, doesn't she?
BETH,
ACTUALLY, WINDY LOVES IT. SHE IS NOT EMBARASSED. SOME DOGS ARE, HOWEVER. WINDY FEELS MORE COMFORTABLE, SHE IS A BIT MORE ACTIVE.

LOL!!! I wonder what dogs think when they are shaved? My dog acts like she is ashamed or something...until I say to her how pretty she looks. I think stormy might live forever. Dogs normally do not live that long do they?? Of course you take really good care of her so I am sure that alone will extend her life expectancy. Cute pictures!! :o) Monica
MONICA,
WINDY IS NOT ASHAMED AND NEVER HAS BEEN WHEN SHE GETS SHAVED. BUT, I HAVE HEARD OF SOME DOG BREEDS THAT DO SHOW SIGNS OF EMBARASSMENT AFTER BEING SHAVED.
WINDY, AMAZINGLY, IS STILL ENJOYING HER LIFE. IT IS GETTING HARDER FOR HER. SHE CAN STILL SEE VERY WELL. HER HEARING IS NOT AS GOOD AS HER SIGHT THOUGH.

She looks like she will be nice and cool this hot summer. I have a Sheltie, but I dare not shave him... his coat helps him in the summer.
Windy looks like a pup after the shave. She looks so much smaller. Great pics Gary.
Thanks for sharing
Joe
JOE,
WINDY DOES LOOK A LOT YOUNGER WITH THE FRESH SHAVE. THANKS!

Windy doesn't look like the same dog. It would appear that when you shaved off the fur, you shaved 10 years off in age. Its always cool to see the pics of the dogs, it brings on another side to your broadcasts. I'm sure there are viewers out there that tune in for the bonus updates on your pets.
THOMAS,
THANKS FOR THE KIND COMMENTS. WINDY STILL HAS A COATING OF FUR, AND I KNOW SHE ENJOYS THE SHAVING.
WE'LL KEEP YOU UPDATED.

Wow...she looks like a different dog! Please let her know that her haircut takes 5 years off her age, easily.
Love it!
STACEY,
I WILL LET WINDY KNOW WHEN I GET HOME TONIGHT.

Gary, or anyone else on the KSHB weather team, I'd like to read your thoughts on the role of intuition in weather forecasting. You can look at all the model outputs and forecasts, but ultimately it is human beings who take all the data and run it through the most complex processor in the universe, the human brain, to come up with forecasts. Personally, it seems to me that what we call "intuition" is often pattern recognition on the part of the subconcious mind. What do you think about this aspect of forecasting?
John,
Intuition is extremely important in forecasting, and this is the single advantage I feel we have over our competitors. But, in general, the good forecaster must look at the computer models, and other data, then make a human decision on what will happen with the weather. Pattern recognition is important, but intuition is more important.

hey, you guys did a great job of covering the severe weather on saturday. Are we gonna get some more severe weather tomorrow?
John,
WE WILL HAVE TO SEE HOW IT SETS UP TUESDAY, BUT SOMEONE NEAR BY WILL LIKELY HAVE SOME SIGNIFICANT SEVERE WEATHER.
THANKS FOR THE SUPPORTING COMMENTS ON SATURDAY NIGHTS COVERAGE.

Hey I'm not mad since St. Clair county is not on your map when severe weather warnings are issued but on saturday night St. Clair county was under a Tornado Warning and no weather station that includes kansas city springfield and joplin had any coverage during the tornado warning. I still think you guys are the best at everything that has to do with weather. So what does the severe threat tomorrow look like will they issue a moderate risk for anyone and where is the best place for severe weather. Thanks alot your the best
DANIEL,
THANK YOU FOR THE VOTE OF CONFIDENCE. AND, I AM CONCERNED THAT YOU DID NOT GET ANY COVERAGE DURING A TORNADO WARNING IN ST. CLAIR COUNTY. WE WILL DO OUR BEST TO MENTION YOUR AREA ONCE IN A WHILE.
TUESDAY EVENING LOOKS SOMEWHAT STORMY FOR YOU. THE MOST LIKELY SPOT MAY BE JUST NORTH OF YOU BUT PAY CLOSE ATTENTION DURING THE EVENING.

Hi Gary
LOL is all I have to say. It makes you wonder what your dogs are thinking about you now, after their shave. LOL :) I was wondering what time are the storms supposed to form tomorrow Does it look like a late afternoon early eveing? or later on in the eveing. I saw that SPC has us under a sight risk tomorrow do you think their is a possibilty of them upgrading the area to a moderate risk tomorrow. Oh and by the way thanks for the ideas on the tv production class. I wont start this class until next year but it never hurts to start preparing now. Thanks again for your ideas. I must admit I am concerned about the possibilty of severe weather in my area tomorrow. I will be sure to keep an eye out tomorrow.
Talk to you later
John Moon III
John,
SEVERE WEATHER IS MOST LIKELY AROUND 7 OR 8 PM. BUT, THE DATA TONIGHT HAS NOTHING! LET'S SEE HOW IT SETS UP TUESDAY.

Gary - Great Pixs of you pups!!! On the weather front (YAWN) from what the NWS indicated, with the upper system remaining well north, I'd bet if anyone sees anything it will be north of the Missouri River, and scattered at that. And there is alway a potential for a line of storms to develope along the dryline/cold-front passing to our south. Hence, another duffill, another dry-slot event (missing out) in the making. It is just the pattern this year, and makes for drought conditions here in Blue Springs at least. I personally don't see a change to a wet pattern in sight - we'd be lucky to get a tenth of an inch in Blue Springs - big deal.
But, you guys do a great job and it isn't your fault I moved to a dry hole (I know you say everyone feels this way, but I have talked to numerous long time residents here who have given me anecdotal evidence to the contrary, and my 5 years here I have witnessed it, and I don't think I am senile, not yet!!!) On that much we will always disagree.
One thing I am sure of, with my past 25 years of storm-chasing/observing - highly tornadic years do not produce an abundance of rain, and that, I submit, is almost always the case. So let's get rid of these d%%$#d tornadoes and get an overruning event that produces 5 inches of rain in a night. (That ain't gonna happen soon, I should think) Time will show whether my gut instinct is right - sure hope I am wrong, but...
Anyway, to repeat, loved your pixs of your dogs.
Cheers,
The Dog
STORM DOGGY,
I AM BEGINNING TO GET ENCOURAGED FOR SOME WIDESPREAD RAIN WITHIN A WEEK. I AM BEING VERY PATIENT AS THERE ARE SOME CONCERNS THAT THE NEXT STORM GETS BLOCKED, AN OMEGA BLOCK, BUT THERE IS A TREND TO GETTING IT CLOSE ENOUGH TO BRING US SOME SIGNIFICANT RAINFALL.
CAN YOU BELIEVE WINDY IS STILL GOING ON? SHE WAS BORN IN OKLAHOMA IN 1989.

My sister has a dog that definitely acts embarassed when he gets shaved. It's adorable to see him hang his head and suddenly get shy. =) But Windy looks much more confident! I spent Easter weekend out of town and missed your broadcast when it got stormy!
MARLINA,
WINDY REALLY DOES FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE SHAVED. SHE HAS NEVER QUITE TOLD ME, BUT YOU CAN JUST SEE IT.
SATURDAY NIGHT WAS ANOTHER CRAZY EVENING OF SEVERE WEATHER. ONE SUPERCELL TRACKED JUST NORTH OF DOWNTOWN.
IT LOOKS LIKE WE WILL MISS IT TODAY.

When I went to work Monday morning I saw where trees and two telephone poles had been snapped in half along 90th street in KCK right behind the hospital from Saturday night's storm. I must say we are becoming real pros at moving patients into the safe area quickly!
JERI,
IT IS AMAZING HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE WE ARE GETTING WITH SEVERE WEATHER THIS SEASON. I AM SURE WE ARE ALL PREPARED NOW IF A SERIOUS TORNADO THREAT APPROACHES. WE HAVE HAD TWO SEASON'S WORTH OF SEVERE WEATHER AND I WOULD NORMALLY SAY THAT OUR SEVERE WEATHER SEASON IS ABOUT TO BEGIN.

I was just looking at the latest outlook from the SPC and it looks as if the worst of the weather will be in central and eastern MO. What can we expect out of this?
JUSTIN,
WE WILL LIKELY HAVE ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!

The pup pics are great! Gary, have you ever seen a tornado in person? I think that would be so powerful and exciting....
Keep up the good work!
Suz
SUZ,
MY BROTHER AND I WENT TORNADO CHASING IN 1999 AND WE SAW AN F3 TORNADO. BUT IT WAS ACTUALLY CHASING US AND I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE AFRAID IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. IT CROSSED THE ROAD BEHIND US NEAR SITKA, KANSAS. IT WAS SO EXCITING, FUN, YET SCARY.

Hey Gary, great dogs. I'm a dog lover too and recently adopted a little poodle that was born with no eyes. I knew I could handle that and he is the love of my life. He is a black poodle and I named him Stevie the "Wonder" dog after, of course, Stevie Wonder. Anyway, I think a great name for your new dog would be Sunny. That is what I named my first poodle back in 1970. Sunny was my exhusband's and my song when we were dating. So, therefore, we named everything Sunny which is just a beautiful, cheerful name. Love you and your babies.
