Tornado Stats

Above is a picture I took from our broadcast the other night on NBC ACTION NEWS. This was the base of the supercell tracking across the Missouri River near Parkville and heading east-northeast just north of downtown Kansas City.

The other graphic shows the number of tornadoes and how we are on record pace so far this year. It will be tough to match the month of May in 2003 and 2004. If we do then this season will get even wilder soon.

Rain chances may be going up with a storm and cold front due in around Sunday night. More on this later.

Wow that is a really cool and scary picture!
I can't wait to see if we get some rain. :)
Have a great night!

JOHN,

THE PICTURE IS RATHER MEAN LOOKING! I AM WORRIED ABOUT THE RAIN CHANCES, BUT IT IS STILL EARLY.

Thanks for posting that pic.. Looks awsome!

About the next round of rain; i know its still 4 1/2 days off but are we expecting any storms with it or just good soaking rain, if it rains at all.

MIKE,

LET'S SEE HOW IT IS SETTING UP IN ABOUT A DAY OR SO. I WOULD JUST LIKE TO HAVE A WIDESPREAD ONE INCH RAINFALL.

Jamie/Gary,
Based on your question in the previous blog entry, I have considered several options for tracking storms via radar. Some as crude as having someone available via cell that could direct me, or as advanced as using software and satellite [XM] navigation...and a couple ideas in the middle like using radar on my cell or wireless laptop. I have seen several sites that do this like Accuweather and I think the Weather Channel has maybe something. What is the link for KSHB to get on my phone? Is the site WAP enabled? Any thoughts from you or others reading would be appreciated!

Thought on the amount of tornados...I will be interested to see how the autumn months add to the total this year. Looking at the graphic above, I see 2004 had quite a spike, likely related to the tornado producing USA landfalling hurricanes/TSs during that timeframe. With the forecast of this year to be above normal, I wonder if that would further increase the numbers to make this a record year!

SCOTT:
The combo of having your own radar to look at AND someone on the phone (watching NBC Action News, right?) :) would be ideal.

Here is the link to sign up for ESP on your cell phone:

I don't have it on my phone because I am always AT WORK when it's raining :) But I know a few of our photographers have it, and I have used it in the field a couple of times! It works great!

Hi - if one believes the long-range GFS for around May 5th, there could be a lot of rain, but unfortunately, while some may fall here, it looked to me like the heaviest will fall just to our south...oh well, we'll see.

Other than that, the pattern shown from 5 days on has SW flow, with minor perturbations embedded within it that, if we had deep Gulf moisture (and that is if!!!) would make for a very active time. But this year, well...you know...

Cheers,
Dog

DOG:
I don't put any faith in the GFS that far out, but it would be interesting to hear from Gary about how that fits with the pattern theory. Let's hope for something out of the Monday/Tuesday event!! That is our next best chance!

Hey Gary,

Thanks for giving Greenwood a shout-out last night on the rain total updates you were doing. We could go for a soaking here, thats for sure!

I also saw last night and have noticed at other times that you and Jack Harry give each other grief quite often. Are you two pretty good friends? Its always funny when he tells you that you don't know what you're talking about weather-wise or when you tell him that he's "just" a sportscaster and not a good one :)

Tim in Greenwood

TIM,

LET'S HOPE IT RAINS EARLY NEXT WEEK.

Jamie,
I know it's still a while away but how's it looking for Mon./Tue.? You guys are always right so I know I can trust you guys. Those are some great pics you guys put up. I wish I could see some of that action but I don't think it's EVER going to happen!! So is the next storm looking like severe weather or just some rain and stuff?? Thanks
Ryan

RYAN,

WE ARE STILL WORRIED ABOUT IT.

Hi Jamie and Gary:
I am having my son's 8th birthday party on May 5th. Do you think I can plan for an outdoor BBQ and outdoor activities or should I plan on indoor stuff?
thanks
Jennifer

JENNIFER:
It's too early to tell! Check back in another week or so.
