T-Storms today, a recap
Good evening everyone,
The day began with an upper level disturbance spinning over southwestern Missouri. It tracked north with a ball of tropical downpours and a few thunderstorms circulating as it moved northward across Johnson County, Missouri into Lafayette County. 3 inches of rain fell on top of 2.8 inches yesterday near Warrensburg.
I saw this disturbance at 5 AM as I was getting ready to update my forecast and go live on Newsradio 980 KMBZ and Country 106.5 WDAF. At this time I believed we would be under this cold pool aloft from the upper level system, and I also noticed the front had fallen apart and there was an inverted trough stretching from Nevada, Missouri north to St. Joseph. This is when I became convinced we would have rather widespread thunderstorms this afternoon and I went for it on the radio. Jamie changed her forecast to a 60% chance of thunderstorms and we hit it. It feels good when the forecast this difficult works out.
Now we look ahead......Below is the 96 hour GFS 500 mb flow (18,000 feet up) valid Sunday morning. This shows a summer like upper high forming over the southwest (I put the arrows showing the anticyclonic circulation). How strong will this feature get? We will have to monitor it closely, but until it comes over us we will have to watch thunderstorm complexes to our north and northwest as we are in north flow aloft on this map.

The weather pattern continues to cycle through the same one that set up in October and November. The colder, high amplitude part of the pattern will be due sometime in June. But, will it be too weak to affect us. It may be. If it is strong enough we could have a wet second half of the month, but only if it is strong enough.
Now to some excitement. We are getting NBC ACTION WEATHER PLUS! This is a 24 hour weather channel that we will be providing many local weather updates on. It will be on our digital tier. We are the first television station in Kansas City to utilize this capability. If you have digital cable then you will be able to see this channel beginning June 12th. On Time Warner Cable I think it will be on channel 1442, where 1441 is channel 41. Is this something you will all watch?

So this station won't be available unless you have digital cable? Too bad...it's a station I would definitely watch. I'm excited for you guys! By the way, any idea how much rain Lenexa got this evening?
Marlina,
Lenexa likely had about .35". The heaviest rain really exploded just south of Lenexa. At least it was something, and last night you got around .35" as well.
And, you must have digital cable. Right now about 250,000 people have this capability in our area and by 2010 it will be almost everyone.

Will this channel be available on the Everest Digital Tier?
MARK:
I am not sure if Everest will offer the channel... I just looked at their channel line-up and I didn't see it. You might want to check with them.

Will it be available to watch online? Right
now I watch it online from the KOMU in Columbia. A handfull of the nbc stations across the country are streaming it online.
DAVID:
YES! You can watch Weather Plus live on our website soon!

I will definately watch -- although I do keep up to date via your website. How often will you be doing live shots on the channel? When you aren't doing live shots -- what will be shown? Forecasts, live radar, KC + suburb live data (temp, high, low, wind, pressure, etc.)?
I believe (Gary -- or KSHB engineers -- correct me if i'm wrong) that you can also pick up the weather-plus channel over the air with an antenna. For those that have a dish if you do a local channel rescan, it should show up as channel 41.2, where 41.1 is the HD channel.
TIM:
Hi, there! We will be taping our weather cutins for Weather Plus 5 to 6 times each day... or as necessary. If the forecast is changing, you can count on Weather Plus to have the latest information. Sometimes, that might require us to do live cut-ins... which we will do!
When our local cut-ins or live shots are not on... you will see national weather forecasts, and coverage of big weather stories... ie, severe weather/hurricane coverage. The local forecast will ALWAYS be visible on the screen, though... even during national content and commercial breaks.

What do you think the chances of sneak-attack late night thunderstorm chances will be this weekend. I would like a good soaking on Saturday...it would make a great birthday gift hahaha.
Kinley
Kinley,
Happy Birthday! And, there is a chance of an early morning thunderstorm.

I have digital cable but I had no idea I had channels 1441 and 1442. Something to investigate. Hopefully the weather will be more exciting... I can't see myself watching forecasts of "Hot, 90 degrees, 20 mph winds" everyday in the Summer. I imagine there are other features to draw viewers.
Putting on your 7 day forecast goggles... I'm going camping June 8 - 11, any idea what the weather or maybe more precisely, what the weather pattern holds? Thanks!
HANK:
Let us know what you think of the channels once you check them out! Besides local weather, Weather Plus will also cover national weather stories... including live coverage of what could be a very active hurricane season!
It's too early to tell what the 8th-11th will bring... Check back in a few days!

I live in Lenexa and I only got a few drops. I got less than .o1" today and only .1" yesterday. I am really hoping for some rain anytime this week.
David
David,
You were in one of the lowest hit areas. Hopefully we will have some more chances soon.

Hi Gary,
I am looking forward to Digital channel 1442! It has to be much better than metro weather! I have seen this in Waterloo, Iowa. They just have a cable channel for this too, but I know it will be a boost for your station. I already seem to watch KSHB the most. Your station is the most down to earth, and have the best stories. But keep it up in the weather department. One question, why doesnt your station have Live doppler radar, not the National Weather Service radar...Your radar and Channel 9's Storm View look nearly identical. What's the difference?
Aaron,
Unfortunately channel 9 purchased the same equipment that we brought to Kansas City earlier this year. The menu's look the same and we will just have to be superior in our use of the information. We do have our own radar, but we find the use of NEXRAD from the National Weather Service to be the best utilization of our tools.

Well, its 1014 and I am getting ready to watch your weather. I see on the noaa radar that their is thundersorms in central and west central kansas. Do you think that it will make it here tonight or die out?
Matt,
There certainly is a chance. Looking at radar I put the chance at 50% by morning.

Would it be possible to stream Weather Plus off your website? There is a NBC station in Florida that does that. That would be great for those of us who don't have cable.
Thanks,
David
DAVID:
I have seen other stations doing that as well. We WILL be doing this as well... so if you don't have HD TV... you can watch Weather Plus live on our website!

If the new channel is anything like this blog at keeping me up to date with the weather, I will watch it alot. You keep improving your equipment and tools to deliver us the most up to date forcast 24/7
Much thanks to KSHB's commitment to how we get our weather!
JOE:
Thanks for your comments. The new channel will be a lot like the blog... as it will contain the most current forecast details. We will update our forecast on Weather Plus as needed throughout the day! And the local forecast will ALWAYS be visible, even during national weather updates and commercial breaks, something unique to Weather Plus! During severe weather events, we will do extensive coverage, too. We are very excited to expand our weather coverage!!

Gary...anyone that has an HDTV tuner will be able to pull in 41.2... this will work for the entire metro area...it's been showing up now for the past week on my TV with a "coming soon" screen. Most people with directv HD or dish network HD will be able to pull in the channel...they might just have to rescan to find it. A good site for people to ask questions is www.avsforum.com - they have a local KC section for local channels question, I belive the KSHB tech people post on that board also.
CHRIS:
Thanks for the info! I have heard there is a "coming soon" slate up on that channel already. And I think another blogger even saw it in his TV Guide. This is new to all of us, so as we get going we will be able to provide more information... but thanks for what you gave US!

Weatherteam,
I am so excited about your new channel. The only people that will be able to watch this new channel are the ones with HD Tv's. I am one of the ones that do not have one. lol. So I will miss being able to watch you guys on that one. I hope there is a way for those of us that do not have HD Tv to watch you. Maybe a different channel for those without HD. Well I wish you all a WONDERFUL day. Take care. Danie
DANIE:
Although there are only 250,000 homes with HDTV's right now... that number will increase. Before long, all TVs sold will be HDTV's.
But in the meantime, if you don't have digital capabilities... you can get a digital converter... that will allow your analogue tv to get our Weather Plus channel. (at a Best Buy type of store). We will also have Weather Plus streaming live on our website.

What if you have Comcast Digital Cable, what channel would it be on?
PATTY:
Our agreement with the local cable carriers states:
"The multicast channel (WeatherPlus) will either be adjacent to or in as close proximity as possible to the current KSHB-DT High-Definition channel."
Everest will be on 631
Time Warner will be on 1442
Comcast - not sure but will either be adjacent to or in as close proximity as possible to the current KSHB-DT High-Definition channel.

Am I wrong in stating that having digital capabilities in both cable and TV viewing is different that HDTV? I guess I was thinking they were two different things...help!
I think you have to have HDTV. Within a few years everyone will have it.
