Baffled again...then again thunderstorms are forming
There is an explanation to what is going on tonight. But, I don't even want to go there at this moment. Jamie has the unfortunate task of trying to explain this on the 10 PM newscast in a few minutes. The models keep trying to place us in an area of development and so far NOTHING.
There is an area of thunderstorms moving across northwest Kansas. This is heading our way and the favored time for warm advection night time thunderstorm development is after 10 PM. So, there is still hope. But, the frustration for weather enthusiasts continues. I will be emcee of the 19th annual Dog-n-Jog on the Plaza in the morning. Of all times it better not rain then.
UH OH! THUNDERSTORMS RAPIDLY DEVELOPING AT 10 PM.
Here is a look at the rainfall estimate from that one thunderstorm cluser that moved over the Plaza:

That is more than an inch and a half in an hour!

Well, I can hear the thunder and I can see the lightening, but no rain as of yet in Bonner Springs. I am sure that will change in just a while. (hopefully)
KERI:
Still a chance overnight....

Here in downtown KCK has cooled down to 66 degrees with alot of thunder and lightning.Wind has picked up and seems to be mostly from the north and strong.
MIKE:
I hope you enjoy this thunderstorm! It's a good one and has turned severe. Gusty winds/hail are possible. The rainfall rates are HIGH, too.

Gary,
We were just watching the nighttime news and were shocked that it took over 8 mins for the severe thunderstorm warning to be even mentioned on the news program. Without our NOAA weather radio we would have had NO IDEA if we were in trouble! I hope this was just a fluke for a station that "prides" itself on its severe weather coverage.
MARK:
Usually, we have our weather bug that would have popped up with the warnings IMMEDIATELY. But because we were in the middle of a newscast they didn't have the bug up. I believe I was actually DOING weather at the time the warning was issued, so I was at the wall... not in the forecast center... and thus, not able to get the warning. After weather, once I did get the warning, I mentioned it in my next hit. If this had been a tornado warning, you better believe I would have interrupted sports.

Gary, or Jamie:
I was outside a minute ago and we have quarter sized hail. The storm is mostly on the missouri side but we just got pummeled, I mean 30 seconds ago. I had never seen hail that big!
Any more coming?
Roberto
ROBERTO:
We have hail here at the station, too! Not that big, but cool to see nonetheless! Keith King just called me... he was driving home south of the Plaza... and he had quarter-sized hail there!

Well, Grain Valley lucked out again, although the lightning was entertaining!
CAN'T YOU PEOPLE SHARE THE RAIN?!?!?! :)
Beth
BETH:
Love your sense of humor about all of this. We need more of that. :)

Just found out a severe thunderstorm watch was issued for the KC metro area overnight. I have not seen anything about this watch on ANY of the local tv stations, what is up with that?
Now, the question is this:
1) Will these stroms hold together and be severe?
2) Or will these storms fall apart, and the watch be dropped only after a couple of hours?
I am glad they issued the watch, but I think it should of been issued sooner. Then again, that is a tough call.
Maybe this storm will not turn out to be a bust after all!
Brian - Overland Park
BRIAN:
Our bug was up during the severe thunderstorm watch. We had some severe thunderstorm warnings issued here, too. But the heavy rain event was north.

Gary,
I couldn't sleep tonight, so I got on the computer for a while and looked on weatherbug. I am seeing the strangest area radar I have ever seen. There appears to be an area of thunderstorms in a curved line stretching all the way from Russell, KS through Northern, KS and MO and then stretching down to north of Columbia, MO. It almost looks like a "rainbow" of strong thunderstorms. What in the heck is that?
JR:
I don't think there is a specific name for the rainbow shape our convection took on.... but it's very telling of how things have gone around here since the fall. The black hole of "no rain" right in the middle.

Good Morning, everyone
Things indeed filled in nicely on the radar this morning. From what I have watched the last 4 hours, I'd say northern Missouri had the training of cells and copious amounts of rainfall, ( those tallied numbers will be interesting on total precip for the event, quite a swath of heavy rain through Moberly, Chillicothe, Trenton, ect. ) Now let's see how the morning unfolds for KC.
Robert
ROBERT:
At least we got something. We were in the wrong spot for the heaviest rains...

Morning all.
SW Lawrence checking in and only a lousy .04" here. Not even enough to perk up the weeds. Heck the streets don't even have any puddles in them.
But it is at least nice to be able to open up the house and let some fresh air in.
Bob
BOB:
Thanks for the update, and for keeping us posted. It will be cooler today, at least we can enjoy that.

I find it interesting that the Flash Flood Watches were issued for the metro's southern counties, yet this morning I look at the rainfall amounts and it is exactly opposite!
How could that have been so wrong?
DWIGHT:
To quote the NWS, "The active weather night did not pan out as planned."

.2" here in Greenwood, we saw all the lightning to the north but apparently were just south of the heavy rain. Most of the rain came overnight, not with the big cell around 10-11pm.
TIM:
Thanks for the rainfall report! You just missed out!
