Contest and weather frustrations
Good morning everyone. This weekend's weather is just another example of how frustrating it has been. More on this in a second, but first, below is our contest we are having for Bloggers and for those watching NBC ACTION WEATHER PLUS, our new weather channel on our digital tier.
PREDICT THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE SUMMER!
All you have to do to enter, is to submit your guess below in our "comments" section. You need to enter a DATE and a TIME OF DAY to help with a tie-breaker. An example would be: August 21st at 2:07 pm!
Try to be that specific to separate you from everyone else. We have started taking entries... and will continue until the deadline... FRIDAY, JUNE 23rd. No entries will be accepted beyond this date! Don't forget to include your contact information... we won't publish that part... but we will put you in our contest database. One entry per person, please!
We will have various prizes for the winner!! This will be exciting and we will list some of your names as we get some hot weather. Good luck!
Now back to our weather. This morning thunderstorms are again in a spot that will likely leave most of us dry. The amazing thing is there are very heavy thunderstorms around. Look at the 6 AM radar:

This shows the thunderstorms just west of us. They could easily have formed overhead and they are still trying to do so. Saturday, thunderstorms died near the state line early in the morning, and then redeveloped just south and east of Kansas City, one county away. Then Saturday night another line of thunderstorms formed and was strong up until the time they got close to Kansas City. It rained, but it then fell apart. The rain cooled air from Saturday afternoons rain east of us was too much for this area of rain and it helped it fall apart. It is always something.
As we look ahead, the models have been trending towards a cooler and wet stretch ahead, but guess what, this morning even that is fading away. Wednesday into early Saturday two fronts will slip into the area and we will have a chance to redeem ourselves and get some rain....or will the frustrations continue?

"To Rain or Not To Rain--That is the question...."
Good Morning Gary. Another weekend has past, and although there were scatttered storms, here in Overland Park we received less than a 1/4 of an inch through both sets of storms.
I was amazed Saturday evening. The line of thunderstorms looked like it was going to give the lawns a well needed drink, but then as it came under the "spell" of KC, it fell apart. That is amazing!
I see that at the end of the week it is going to be a tad bit cooler (closer to normal) with only a slim chance of storms.
Can you look into your crystal ball and tell me if this weather pattern is going to break soon? Do you think we are in for a major dry spell yet this summer?
Man, I hope this pattern breaks!
Later,
Brian
Brian,
We just had about 8 GFS runs in a row since Friday showing a cooler long wet stretch of weather, then suddenly the 06z data from last night backed off on it. So, my feeling is confused right now. We should have 3 to 4 inches of rain during the next 15 days, but then again the way things are going I wouldn't be surprised if we get missed again. The big test will be Wednesday through Friday night. The latest GFS run still has 3 to 4 inches all around us.
Summer starts Wednesday. Spring and Winter failed us, so let's see if summer can pass its first test.

Gary, I don't blog every day, but I do get out and read the blog just about every day. I'm a believer in your weather pattern theory and that this has been a boring pattern. As for the hottest day, I think it will be later in the summer. So I am going with August 30th @ 4:19 pm. My contact information is Mark Masloski. Have a great one and please try to bring some interesting weather back!
Mark
Mark,
Thanks. Hopefully it will rain this week. IT SHOULD with the set up we have.

Just to follow up on the previous blog, I will say July 30th, 4:55 PM. I should wait until the deadline to do this as I would have a much better chance based on when the temp models come out..but thought I would keep it fair in the spirit of competition.
Scott,
Your first guess is often your best guess. Good luck!

Good Afternoon, Jamie & Gary
As we get officially closer to the solstice and the summer season, it gets harder for thunderstorms as we know in this area of the country to be widespread. This last weekend gets as exaspirating as I have ever seen it with missed opportunities, and this week hopefully something will surprise us and bust this wide open..but dryness is really setting up now. We're at 7" {KCI) below for the year and it could be a long hot summer. What's perplexing about this pattern of frustration is the small area that keeps disappointing, Basically Lawrence - St. Joe - Metro and adjacent east and then south to Miami County Ks. what I don't understand is why it's so small an area of drought?? it has literally rained around this area all spring!! I think the heat comes back this summer big and stays late and i'm going with September 5th, 4:45 p.m. for the hottest day.

Gary - I believe there will be multiple days of 100 or over by mid July to late August, so predicting the hottest day is, for me, futile. As for rain, I'll bet you the GFS is again experiencing convective feedback problems, as as oft happened this year. Also, with a drought like this, even scenarios that should, don't, and we could well be into Fall (if then) before any significant rains. It would have to be a very significant set-up to produce relief - a half-inch ain't gonna do it.
At least I don't have to mow my lawn for a while.
BTW, maybe we should visit New England the next few days - what a severe weather outbreak there - massive line of storms from Caribou down into western Mass. and on into NW Conn.

Hey Gang;
Just a thought in the back of my head. Could this Cold Front Stall out to the North. Yes anything that forms up along the Cold Front could produce a lot of Rain. If it does Stall out just how far out will the cooler air overcome the hot air to help produce storms ? Could this be why one of the GFS Models Says nothing for us? Just some off the wall thinking. This could allow some areas to pool up with Available Moisture ?
Steve,
Even if the front stalls an outflow boundary would push through from all of the thunderstorms. So, it will be amazing to see if we miss another one.

Hey Gary, If we all turned our sprinklers on at the same time of day to create a moist area, would it attract rain? I figure that the only people around here getting rain are the ones who have been getting it for the last few weeks. Let's get out of the "dry dome"!
I predict that the hottest day will be July 15, 2006 @ 1:30 pm. I really hope I'm wrong and that it will be 75 that day.

Gary,
I saw your 6pm forecast, and I might not be up for the 10pm forecast (I am not feeling to good today.) Anyway, I find it very interesting what you said at 6 especially with the GFS showing that the rain is going all around us. That has been the pattern all spring and it seems like it is the first time that the models have even picked up on this pattern (I could be wrong there.) But you stated that every time the models show rain to our north and south perhaps we will be in the bulls’ eye after all? Wouldn't that be great if for once the models were wrong? I mean they have been wrong all along, but they have had the bulls’ eye over KC. Now, they don't have the bulls’ eye over KC, and what if they are wrong again, but this time for the better?
What is funny is NWS does not even mention rain until Thursday (I think you said that too.) Man, this time I really hope that the models are wrong and that we are in the bulls’ eye. For once, I hope the NWS DOES NOT forecast heavy rains, and we get a surprise. Better yet, I hope THEY don't forecast it, but YOU do! Then you will get the million dollar prize! :-)
Later- Brian
Brian,
The problem is that as we get closer the models may predict the bullseye to be near us, then they would be wrong again. Hopefully we get this one. Everything sure seems that way.
We hope you are feeling better soon.

Gary,
My guess for the hottest day this year is July 22, 4:30 pm.
BTW, working late tonight and noticed on ESP what appears to be a storm system west of here - any chance of it making to KC area later this morning? I missed the forecast at 10:00 last night, so wasn't sure.
Terry,
It was that cluster & disturbance tha brought our clouds & sprinkles this morning. Once again it falls apart as it arrives.
