Contest, heat, rain, and pictures
Good morning,
The contest continues and we are getting a lot of entries. We decided to make the deadline for entries THIS FRIDAY instead of next Friday . This will allow us to have time to organize all of the entries and start having fun on the air with them. So, if you have not entered please do so by the end of this week. The details are below.
PREDICT THE HOTTEST DAY OF THE SUMMER!
All you have to do to enter, is to submit your guess below in our "comments" section. You need to enter a DATE and a TIME OF DAY to help with a tie-breaker. An example would be: August 21st at 2:07 pm!
Try to be that specific to separate you from everyone else. We have started taking entries... and will continue until the deadline... FRIDAY, JUNE 23rd. No entries will be accepted beyond this Friday! Don't forget to include your contact information... we won't publish that part... but we will put you in our contest database. One entry per person, please!
Now back to our weather situation.
The latest NAM and GFS have the axis of heaviest rain right through our local region. I still have big concerns that something will go wrong considering what has happened lately. At this time of year it can get very wet, but at the same time most July's have rain three or four times and when you get it you usually get a lot. The rest of the month is often dry. So, as July approaches we must take advantage of these situations. I am acting like we have control over this which we don't.
Below is the 06z data from the GFS and NAM. Both have quite a bit of rain here, especially the NAM.

Click to enlarge (GFS forecast Wed-Fri rainfall)

Click to enlarge (NAM forecast Wed-Fri rainfall)
Summer begins Wednesday morning at 7:26 AM. And, the pattern wants to become dominated by the "anticyclone", or the high heights aloft that is often centered over the southwestern United States over its favored summer position. Right over the deserts. Summer will begin with the flow coming out of the north and northwest so let's hope we get the rain this week. I will have it covered on tonights weathercasts. Now to the dog and baby show below. Jeff Penner and his wife stopped by over the weekend and Skyler met the dogs.

Windy, Stormy & Breezy on a photo shoot, it was hot

Windy lying on her new bed (she is 16 years 7 months old)
This is a Gel-Pedic bed given to Windy....very comfortable!

Jeff Penner's baby Skyler getting a Stormy kiss

Windy giving Skyler a kiss too
I must say that it is dangerous to have dogs give the baby kisses. Windy and Stormy have always just naturally gone up to baby's and kissed them. Please don't allow your dogs to do this unless you really know your dogs well. Breezy, for example, is afraid of the baby and we didn't even let her get close. Maybe some day, but not if the dog is nervous.
Have a great day! And think rain!

This forecast brings out the "Dog" in me. I don't have a reason for believing this, as the NAM and GFS say otherwise, but I am convinced the "dome" or the "tong split" or other metaphors of folklore will somehow prevent getting as much rain as we need. In fact, as usual, I am sure the east side will somehow get left out again. But, it looks good on radar and is fun to talk about!
Scott,
The latest NAM still has about 2 to 3 inches of rain by Friday. This will be another interesting week, and yet another disappointment, or maybe it will come together for us?

Gary,
First of all - I loved the pictures! Now, will (should) any of the activity on the radar this morning make it to Blue Springs? It still feels nice outside right now - do you still think it will get really hot today? I have to say, our weather has just been unbelievable! It is keeping you on your toes! :) Have a great day!
Kristi,
Yes, this is amazing. Maybe tomorrow.

Gary,
Whats the severe weather potential, if any? Or are we just looking at rain intensive thunderstorm complex's? By the way, the dogs look great, wish I had a dog like the ones you have. Good Day!!!
Jeff,
When the thunderstorms first develop there could be some severe weather, but otherwise just big rainers.
Thanks for the kind comments about the dogs.

Gary,
How much rain do you think will fall in Lee's Summit? How high is the risk for severe weather around Kansas City this week? Also wanted to tell you that I loved the Dog pics! You have wonderful dogs!!!
Jacob
Jacob,
The potential is there for 1-2" of rain. However, the way things have been going .25" to .50" would be nice. The severe weather threat is low as the flow aloft is not that strong. Thank you for the dog picture compliments.

Why no faith in the models Gary? What factor is present on the ground (in the air?) that the models aren't predicting? I wanna believe it will rain. Have you thought of a drought picture contest? See who can show the driest looking photo? That would be fun.
Thanks, you guys are the most fun too watch!
Tim
Tim,
It is hard to trust the models as they have showed rain here before and been wrong. I will admit the set up for Thursday does look promising, but lets see how it really sets up. It should rain a decent amount. There aren't really any factors in the ground or air as I believe what os happening is a bout of bad luck. It is raining just fine 50-100 miles in all directions around us. If this keeps up we will have to start a drought picture contest.

Thank you for posting the comments about people making sure they know their dogs' behavior before allowing them too close to young children. It's important people realize that they have to take a role in monitoring their pet's behavior.

Gary & Jamie, Looks like the NAM has the bullseye W/NW of us, and the GFS has the bullseye just to the south of the metro for the heavy rain. Which model do you have more confidence in?
Thanks

Gary,
Thank you for not agreeing with the models 100%. So many forecasters "Model hug," and take what the models say as gospel. First, there is only one gospel! :-) Second, the models are just a computer spitting out information.
Ok, I have to be honest. Because rain has been in the forecast so many times, and because so many times we have had no major rain at least in the metro area, I simply don't beleive the forecast. It is not you, it is just a fact of life. I know a couple of times I have said you have hyped the forecast, but I realized it is not you as much as it is others, especially NWS. They are already worried about heavy rain, and with the dry conditions, I just don't think that will be a problem.
Anyway, let us see how this thing sets up! I have my doubts.
Later,
Brian - Overland Park
