Interesting Sunday

The weather on Sunday has the potential to be somewhat exciting. A cold front & disturbance will be tracking through from the north around noon Sunday (see forecasted upper level flow from the GFS model for 1 pm Sunday). These features may help to touch off some scattered showers & T-Storms midday Sunday. So, the day may start sunny with building cumulus during the morning. Some of these clouds may grow into showers & T-Storms with brief heavy downpours. They may be around for 2-3 hours & then move away with the day ending partly cloudy & pleasant.

*********************************************************Jeff,
What do you mean by "interesting"? Do you mean the possibility of something severe or just some good ol' thunderstorms? Thanks!
Matt
PS Congrats on the newborn. May you and your wife get some sleep.

Matt,

I meant that it may start sunny with building clouds, then some T-Storms (like today), then followed by mostly cloudy & cooler weather. Its just that the weather will change many times tomorrow. There is little chance of severe weather.

Sleep is still a rare commodity. Hopefully, in 1-2 months he will sleep through the night.

I have a party this afternoon outside..any chances of rain? Looks like anything forming is heading NE?

Scott,

Hopefully your party was not ruined. The rain will end south of the river by aound 7 pm. It is already over north of the river.

I noticed before you didn't have a chance of rain posted for today (Saturday) or at least I don't think so. Did the line of storms that formed just to the west of us take you by surprise? I know it did for me!

We had in the forecast for tonight into Sunday. But yes, this was a bit of a surprise. By 9 AM, however, we knew that this could happen.

Team,
I was mowing in Wyandotte and it started to sprikle a little bit. I went up to my truck and out of no where a flash of lighting happened and then it started to pour. I think that it probably rained about a 1/2" to about 1". I noticed you raised tomorrow chance from 30 to 60.

JEFF:
Yes, we have another chance of rain Sunday. Thanks for letting us know about your rain event!

We live in Liberty and are getting a lot of rain. Normally that would be great, but we are having an outdoor party tonight at 6:00 - do you know if the rain is supposed to continue? Thanks!

HANNAH:
It should be over for you for the night!

Good Afternoon, Jamie & Jeff

Well, it was interesting this afternoon to say the least in Leawood Ks. We had the cumulus congestus buildups early..looked like it was getting serious and then it dissapated { for the umpteenth time }. It built up again, darkened and left a trace of rain as things moved off to the east, once again I thought " here we DON'T go again " then it built up for the third time and literally we had torrential rainfall!! If you watch the radar in timelapse, the cell actually moved southeast and then backbuilt north and meandered over Johnson County, Kansas. Traveling down 69 highway east from 135th was a virtual whiteout..glorious stuff =) I'd say a good 1-2" fell in general and it was extremely welcomed here in this neck of the woods for sure, hoping for a repeat tomorrow. ( Jeff..congratulations on your new baby and thank you for sharing photos )

A big fat zero in Lawrence today.

This is the fifth time in June that there has been heavy rain within 10 or 20 miles of here with us missing entirely. I've lived here for 15 years and haven't ever remembered being this lucky/unlucky (depending on your view -- we need the rain) for such an extended period of time, with storm so nearby.

For the entire month of June we're at about half an inch total...amazing.

MIKE:
Thanks for keeping us updated on Lawrence rainfall. Too bad you missed out... they were so close to you yesterday AND today. We still have the chance on Sunday.

Nice to have the rain...bad that the forecast completely missed it. Such as being a forecaster..sometimes you nail it, other times, you completely miss it.

And yes, the party was signifcantly challenged. Maybe next year.

Scott:
Our forecast did not "completely miss it" as you say. Here is a quote from my blog last night:

"So we'll see a mainly DRY weekend, with the potential for a few spotty showers/thunderstorms as waves of energy rotate around that ridge and drift our way. The best chance looks to be late Saturday into Sunday morning as a cold front moves in."

So, yes, they happened earlier than we thought... but we knew they could happen. Jeff actually updated the forecast on Weather Plus by 9:30 this morning.

But... yes... yeay for the rain!

Today's steady rain in Pleasant Hill (3/8 inch) made it quite enjoyable on the front porch with the laptop. I had to be where I could enjoy the sound. I'll miss it in July and August!

DWIGHT:
That sounds like the PERFECT way to spend the afternoon!! Thanks for the report!

Hi - My condolences to Lawrence, KS - I know how he feels - we did have rain, but still the pattern would be nicer if everyone got a good dousing. We need a stalled front to our south, say fifty miles or so, so that the 850 MB front is near us, allowing the moisture to ride up and over the boundary, producing widespread overrunning storms, but alas that hasn't been the case this June. One year in Oklahoma in June, we got 8-10 inches that month - it was glorious - lightning bolts striking the front yard - bit concerning, but "enlightening", pardon the pun.

STORMDOG:
I actually took a walk in the rain this afternoon and was happily DRENCHED!! :) I figured I better do it while I had the chance!

Wanted to report .45 inches of rain here in Greenwood for the day. Not as much as other areas it sounds, but we'll take it.

Tim in GW

TIM:
Thanks for the report! There are a few more chances in the forecast, including Sunday!

The rain was great... had 1.5 inches by 95th & Metcalf. I took my dog for a walk too and got soaked.
Lets hope for another inch tomorrow :)

Wasn't that fun?? :)
