Weekend Forecast

Good moring, Bloggers!

This is the first day of our new weekend morning shift! From now on, I will be here doing cut-ins to the Weekend Today show... AND updating Weather Plus. That means more blogging! Yeay! :)

Do you believe what happened overnight, as that large area of thunderstorms moved our way? It was pretty depressing, if you wanted rain. First, what the radar looked like at 10PM:

Radar Image June17.jpg

One look at that, and you might think we'd get hit! Well... this pattern just doesn't work that way for us. Now... what the radar looked like this morning as those thunderstorms moved through the Metro:

Radar Image June17Later.jpg

The thunderstorm complex REALLY weakened as it moved into air that was just more stable. So... consider yourself lucky if you picked up early morning rain! Here are some rainfall numbers from around the area so far today:

KCI: .03"
DOWNTOWN: TRACE
PLAZA: .01"
ST. JOSEPH: TRACE
TOPEKA: .10"
LAWRENCE: .17"
OLATHE: .17"
MANHATTAN: .32"
EMPORIA: .28"

There is an upper level low located at the Kansas/Nebraska border this morning:

That low will move southeast... passing just south of Kansas City tonight into early Sunday morning:

As we get a little daytime heating, we will probably see scattered thunderstorms develop this afternoon. It does not look like everyone will see rain, but those that do get a thunderstorm could get some pretty good amounts. There is not a huge threat for severe weather today, but gusty winds/small hail are possible. So, not a complete wash-out... but keep an eye to the sky if you have outdoor plans today!

Have a good one!

So you're not expecting much rain on Sunday? I hope not, we plan to be outside most of the day!

MARLINA:
There is a chance of a little rain in the morning, then dry. Hope you enjoy it!

We farm so weather is something we follow closely. We seem to be missing the rains they come down from the north to St. Joe then skip to K.C. south. Is this a pattern we will have the rest of the summer? We heard a weatherman on radio say the pattern was setting up like '54 where it rained in the southeast and we were in a major drought. When we will see regular weather patterns where rain forms and everyone gets a rain?

DONNA:
It is hard to say when we will all get the good soaking rain that we deserve, as each storm system is different. This pattern has just been horrible for rain here. Hopefully we will have some good summer thunderstorms to help even things out... and to hold us over until the new pattern sets up this fall. Hopefully the new pattern will be better for us... it can't be much worse!

Jamie,

Got to agree on last night being depressing.

As I sat here and watched all the Watches and Warnings march across Kansas it looked like a can't miss situation, yet no sooner than the complex hit Topeka it pretty much fell apart at the seams.

As you probably noticed the TStorm Warning for Douglas county was seemingly cancelled nearly as fast as it went up.

Total rainfall for my part of the city was .13", which is better than naught, but not by much.

Perhaps with some luck today's rain event will start up where last night's left off, but as we both know that is seldom the case.

Bob

HI, BOB!
Thanks for the rainfall report. We have a chance of thunderstorms later this afternoon and overnight. But it's not looking as good as it could...

Good Morning, Jamie

First off, congratulations to you and Gary and Jeff and everyone at KSHB 41 for the new 24/7/365 Weather Plus weather service! wishing you all great success with it. Watching this early mornings wall of water march across Kansas with torrential rains and high winds to literally die on the Leavenworth, Wyandotte, Johnson county lines to a few showers SPEAKS volumes for our continueing perplexing pattern of storm withering ongoing. That was amazing. Looking at the satellite this morning, perfect setup..nice cyclonic low spin in place advancing towards us and given any other normal time, widespread squalls and thunderstorms would be forming and marching across eastern Kansas / western Missouri, today however...i'll do a raindance and wash the car..and hope..maybe this is finally the surprise! have a good weekend Jamie =) ( ps hey, how was Florida? )

Robert

ROBERT:
Please wash your car! ;)

Florida was great... I got in ok on Monday morning. There was some pretty heavy rain in the Tampa area through Monday afternoon... but it wasn't until Monday night that the big stuff hit. It was maybe from 1 to 4 in the morning... constant heavy rain and HOWLING wind! I have never heard such loud weather! VERY interesting, and thank goodness they got the rain they needed... while avoiding major damage.

Jamie

It is getting very dry, and it will be even easier for the temperatures to get hot this summer. The ground looks as dry as New Mexico right now. The leaves will probably drop soon at this rate. I am not hopeful for much rain in July. What a horrible weather pattern.

Devin

DEVIN:
I have a feeling we will have our fair share of HOT days this summer, too...

Hello Team:

It looks like "Another Bites the dust." I just read the discussions from the NWS and they have gone from 60% chance of rain for the afternoon to nothing. WHY? Because the air is more stable. KC is doomed not to get any rain. This weather pattern stinks!

Severe weather seasons was more or less a bust after April.

I think it did rain in Overland Park last night, but not much. Models do not catch this for some reason that is the dry air and more stable air! Once again, this weather pattern leaves frustration!

BRIAN:
There was a little over a tenth of an inch that fell in Overland Park. Not enough.

Do u think the storms in southeast kansas will intensify and actually make it to Appleton City. What do u expect from these storms.

DANIEL:
There is a chance. Heavy rain, lots of lightning... maybe some small hail and wind.

Another "good" chance for rain, another bust. Yet another miss...

KW:
Maybe for you, but most of our southern counties are getting rain right now! Too bad it's not everyone...
