Weekend recap
Gooooood morning everyone,
This past weekend, for me, was about as frustrating as I have ever experienced. A thunderstorm formed at 10 PM over Overland Park. It then intensified, produced large hail and crossed the state line heading towards Blue Springs. There was so much lightning and yet I had no rain in my rain gauge until 3 AM when thunderstorms extended south into most areas for a brief time. Northern Missouri had the brunt of the weekend rain with widespread 4 to 6 inch rainfall amounts stretching across the northern 1/4th of the state. Where it rained it stayed in the 60s to lower 70s Sunday, which is what I was expecting through the KC metro area but we stayed just south of the front until evening. The cooler air has finally taken over but it should start moving out tomorrow.
This morning thunderstorms are widespread over Kansas, but we will be left dry. In fact, I don't know when our next chance of rain will arrive. This can change fast so we'll see how things line up in the next week.
More later. Have a great day. It should be a nice one with clouds and a northeast breeze.

Good Morning Gary:
Yes, this weekend was strange. The strong Thunderstorm was overhead here in Overland Park, and after that not much. I was surprised they issued a watch at 1135 pm.
I was also surprised NWS droped the flood watch for the north. Mother nature fooled every one, and everything went north. Wasn't this the same thing that happened with that snow-storm in March?
This pattern is nuts. Gary, you should really write about this pattern and let other people know about it. This pattern effects the whole country right? I bet the NWS would like to know more about your theory. Maybe it would help them.
Anyway, all in all you guys did a good job. As I said yesterday, the storm was NOT a total bust. At least some areas received rain, right?
Anyway, have a great day.
Later,
Brian - Overland Park
Brian,
I presented my theory to many of the people at the NWS. I am sure they are thinking about it.
Yes, this weekend turned out almost exactly like we thought it would, but the widespread heavy rain was a few counties to our north.

**********************************************************I know how you feel; it has been very frustrating in Lawrence too. We also missed last Monday's storms, at least you guys got some rain from those. We've been bone-dry for a solid 2 weeks. Most unwatered ground is as brown as Augut now.
Oh well, that is Kansas, either way too much rain or way too little...."just right" is for fairy tales :-)
Mike,
Hopefully, we will get better rain chances during the 5-10 day period as a ridhe forms in western Canada, forcing the jet stream further south.

Gary I feel your pain, as I watched the radar early Sunday. I live on the platte county line just north of weston and the storms split right around us. I had .10 in my gauge. I can't understand why it did that.
Michael,
It is amazing, I live in southern Overland Park and thhe Saturday night T-Storms missed me by 5 miles. I got a few drops. Our next decent rain chance is still 5-7 days away.

I was excited about the storm in Overland Park also (I know, it caused damage, but I can't help myself but to love severe storms). I was sure based on radar that this storm would cross town and give us heavy rain on the east side..but then 45 minutes later I noticed that we had no rain and less lightning, so I looked on the weatherscan station on TV and it show'd that it went north of us.. bah! Mother Nature is so cruel to us.
Dave,
I agree, maybe in 5-7 days when our next T-Storm chances arrive you will be the lucky one.

Gary,
And the weather team.
I am just as frustrated. I have a lot of plants and trees i care for, about 1 acre. So iam always praying for rain. I live 68th and leavenworth rd in Kck. I seem to keep missing all of the rains in the last 3 or 4 weeks. Just like Saturday night into Sunday morning. I know Kci only had .09. Well i did not fair much better. I had .11. Lets get this pattern to break and give us more and better wide spread rains. Right Gary?
Talk to you soon,
-Rodney Spurgeon
Rodney,
I wish I could do something about it.

Gary,
Are you still expecting cool and wet last 2 weeks of June as you were last week? I notice the long range forcast from NWS is hot and dry.
The pattern is still going on, but there is a good chance that the wet part of the pattern will be north of us. Let's see how this evolves. Right now I lean heavily with that hot and dry forecast.

Why all of the sudden are we in this weather pattern? I mean, when weather forecasters said it was going to rain it did and now a days you take what everyone says with a grain of salt. The last HUGE storm we were supposed to get...TOTAL BUST!!!! This last weekend.....a SEVERE WEATHER EXPECTED.....it was only in isolated areas. So what gives to this weather? I am in St. Joeseph, MO.
Brian,
We never thought it would be a serious severe weather set-up. However, a major T-Storm event did occur just north of you on Saturday night with widespread 4-6" rains. We do feel your frustration.

It's been really frustrating in Lawrence. We haven't had any precipitation in over two weeks...most of the unweatered grassy areas are as brown as mid-August. We've managed to miss even the brief events that the KC metro got last Monday and against Saturday.
Hopefully things will turn around, but I guess that is Kansas...you either get way too much rain or way too little, never just right!
Mike,
The latest GFS run brings us some good chances for rain in about a week. But, I am not excited about it yet.

Hi Gary-
The New Weather Plus+ station looks great. I"m watching it on Everest Cable right now. It seems the volume level is lower than KSHB-DT 42.1 which is a little bit annoying, and on the bottom part of the "L" bar it looks like the % Chance of Rain is getting cut off.
Overall, great addition to the NBC Action Weather Team! I know it will be a great help for those of us always interested in the weather!
Derek,
We will get the audio correct. It is likely just an issue we will get right.

Gary,
When do you think weatherplus will be available to watch online?
David,
We plan on streaming it online soon. Be patient.

Gary,
Action Weather Plus is great!! Will you be giving us more "advanced" weather info on the new channel? That is one of the things I love about the blog. You give us a good education about weather that no other source can come close to. I hope your new TV channel will educate us even more. Thanks for the new channel. It's awesome.
Derek
Derek,
This is exactly what I am hoping for this channel. I won't have anyone telling me what to have on there so this should give us an opportunity to do "blog" like things.

Hey Gary, Jamie posted a day or two ago that she was going to Tampa today. Did she go? I just saw on a news web-site that they've issued a mandatory evacuation order for the area just north of Tampa. Please fill us in on whether she went and when she makes it back alright! And as always, thanks to you, Jamie, Brett and Jeff for doing such a terrific job. And be sure to let Jeff know we want to see some baby pictures when he has a chance :-)
Koyuki,
Jamie did make it to Tampa this morning. So, she is experiencing a tropical storm. She was so worried she wouldn't make there.

Gary,
You nailed today's forecast right on! NWS was forecasting highs today to be much warmer and the end of last week, and you were calling for cooler temps.
You know what I really don't understand? Why are your forecasts and NWS forecasts so much different? I mean are you really looking at the data with a differnet light?
Is this weather pattern new? In other words, is this something that has developed this year, or has this pattern be around for a while?
I wish you could look into your Crystal Ball and to see what will happen in July (the 2nd week in July.) My dad and his best friend are coming from Michigan to visit me and they are not used to this heat! LOL.
Anyway, have a great evening!
Blessings - Brian - Overland Park
Brian,
It is too early to tell on the middle of July forecast. Thank you for noticing our accuracy. It should have been in the 70s yesterday too, and it was JUST north of here.
Watch out in a week it could get exciting as we have been thinking it may. But, I am gun shy right now.
