Evening Calm

TODAY'S NUMBERS:
HIGH: 79
LOW: 72

For those of you that wanted to see the very beginning of the Emmys... they will be re-broadcast on the Bravo Network Monday at 4pm.

OK... what a crazy night! Earlier this afternoon, I blogged about developing thunderstorms... little did we know one of them would turn tornadic!! This just goes to show you that they can--and DO-- produce tornados with little or no warning. It was not a classic tornado-type day by any means... but when it comes to weather... never say never.

Notice the red dot just to the east of Kansas City. This was a confirmed tornado touch-down! The spouse of a NWS employee spotted the tornado just north of Independence Center. Another report of a tornado--although not by a storm spotter--came 5 miles southwest of Sibley. We received many reports of tree limbs down... and some structural damage to a Quick Trip in the Independence area. Here is what the radar looked like as the storm in question came through Jackson County Missouri:

One of our storm spotters, Sean Wilson with Blown Away Tours, captured this amazing photo of a shelf cloud on that thunderstorm... truly beautiful:

shelf cloud 1.BMP

He took this picture just south of Lexington, Missouri while chasing this evening! It was a rather dangerous situation... because the thunderstorm had such HIGH rainfall amounts... it is totally possible that any tornado was rain-wrapped... ie, you couldn't see it through the heavy rain.

We also have FLOODING problems all across the area. The heavy rains that came this evening fell on VERY saturated ground. If you didn't get to see it yet... tune in to NBC Action News tonight at 10pm to see some very impressive flood video!!

The main storm is still to our west... so while there is a lull in the precipitation now, our chances will really linger through Monday. I am wiped out.

I hope now that the pattern change has shifted that we can have an exciting pattern but we can deal without this tornado stuff, by the way we can .80 of rain this evening to bonner springs so that brings our total since midnite to 6.60 inches of rain with a total since friday afternoon to 8.35 inches of rain this totally puts a temporary dent in the drought.

JEREMY:
It REALLY puts a dent in the drought!! In just one day, we went from more than 7" below average to just about 4.7" below average. Talk about catching up!!

After 1.93" overnight Friday into Saturday, followed by 1.61" overnight last night, we recorded another very fast 2.01" during the afternoon hours today for a full weekend total of 5.55" here in Tonganoxie.

JAKE:
Great numbers... thanks for sending them in!!

JOE:
Thanks for the nice comments. I am really drained right now... ready for a good night's rest! I have one more day, and then Gary is back on Tuesday!

For what its worth..in watching the news tonight, you might let your anchors know that Ernesto was downgraded to a TS..and is not any longer a hurricane ;-)

SCOTT:
With all the craziness of this evening... I didn't even notice they were running anything on Ernesto tonight. I will mention it to them, thanks for pointing it out.

I think you guys, as well as the other stations in town, did a fantastic job considering the "surprise" nature of this event. Its amazing what a boundary can do in enhancing an environment for a storm!

LANCE:
Thanks for your nice comments! It was a pretty stressful situation--especially at first. And who knew it would last for 2 hours?!

Jamie, I told you.. Did I not say a few days ago that as soon as I leave town the wild stuff will show up! :) I was at the airport around 3:30 when it was raining very hard, it wasn't till we were in the air that I saw on frontier's direct tv service that jackson county was in a tornado warning.. holy cow... :|

DAVE:
You sure called it! I hope you have a safe trip!

Good morning Jamie :)

We have had about 6 inches of rain since Friday. The tornado warning really surprised us. We are about 1 mile away from 24 hiway. As the sirens were going off, I was getting the dogs to the basement, my husband and son were looking outside and could see the clouds rotating around just right above our house. I don't want to say that I'm afraid of these kind of storms, I grew up in Nebraska, I just have alot of respect for them :)

I agree with your other blogger, you did a fantastic job last night. Thanks for watching out for all of us :)

DONNA:
Thank you for your comments... last night was a very odd event. That must have been scary to see the rotation right over your house!! I am glad you are all safe!

Thanks for the good work during the storms, Jamie. We appreciate you keeping an eye out for us here in the "boondocks" after the storms leave the metro area. BTW, we picked up an additional .3" in Emma, all after the sun went down.

PASTOR SNYDER:
That is good to hear... we are glad you stayed safe! Thank you for the rainfall update! I think we might be done with the HEAVY HEAVY stuff for now.

Do any of your long-range models (GFS x10) show a cutoff low developing over Minnesota by Labor Day? Could this possibly put us into a prolonged NW flow?

BTW: 5.25 inches at 145th and Antioch in S. OP since Friday morning and thanks for your weather coverage last night.

JOE:
I have seen signs of that on the GFS and the European. It is still a long way down the road... so it could change... we will see. Thanks for your rainfall info and the nice comments. Nights like last night are utterly exhausting... we are glad it is over.

Great job dealing with the storms yesterday. It was my birthday so after i ate way to much food i fell asleep and when i woke up i saw your coverage on tv. I live near Liberty so it wasnt comming my way but what a birthday suprize! Do you, or anyone who reads this blog, know of any pictures of it online?

MICHAEL:
Happy late birthday! The only picture I have seen of that particular storm is the one posted in our blog!

Me being the "stupid" person that I am, while my mom shepherded the dogs into the basement, I ran outside with my camcorder. I live just a couple streets down from the intersection of 291 and 23rd St., so just north of me would be where the major part of the cell was swirling around here in Independence.

Well, me being me, I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get more cool cloud formations on camera. I got about 10 minutes worth. Didn't end up seeing any funnels (from what I could tell), but could definitely see where the clouds were broiling upward.... Pretty cool looking stuff.

I have to commend you guys on a job well done. I really appreciated your coverage yesterday, and I had no problems at all with you cutting into the Emmy programming... I think people's lives are definitely more important than who's best or worst dressed. I hate when friends complain about the weathercasts cutting into their favorite programming--they don't really realize just how important it is.

So, anyway, from here at 291 and 23rd, we got some cool cloud formations to the north, but didn't get any rain 'til after that had passed. We got a good soaking (I don't have a gauge, so I couldn't tell you any measurements), but we didn't have any hail.

The excitement definitely came suddenly, but was a nice change of pace for me (who was laid up all day yesterday from wisdom tooth extraction).

I'm glad that the confirmed touchdowns didn't hurt anyone. I've always had aspirations of stormchasing, but only as long as the storms are over uninhabited fields....

Anyway, great weather coverage last night from the best weather team in Kansas City!

Thanks KSHB!

JOY:
Thanks for the report from Liberty! If you are really serious about storm chasing... you should look into going out with a tour. Let me know if you would like any info on that... and thanks for watching us!

Well, I was at work Sunday when you guys had all your "fun" with flooding and a TORNADO! It's amazing how things decided to do a complete 180 from hot and dry to "cool and wet". I did a double take when I read the blog last night and heard about the tornado.
Nick in St. Joe!

NICK:
Friday night we made the bold statement that we would have to watch for Flash Flooding over the weekend. It is amazing that it actually happened, considering the bad weather pattern we have been in. Can you see that this is a completely different pattern??

Hi Jamie - What an incredible evening yesterday - Sundays are my "Fridays", so a nice way to end a work week for me. At the Ranger Station it poured after 1600 or so, but we didn't receive too much at home, but got some later in the last shower. I broadcast radio reports to the Jackson County Park Rangers (I am the 2nd shift dispatcher/clerk out at Lake Jacomo station)with the warning details - kept my adrenalin going (near 50 that's dangerous!!!) I could not believe a tornadic cell formed, and then prolonged its' life for over an hour into Lafayette Co. Someone needs to do a thorough analysis of surface conditions/upper conditions, moisture pooling, geographic factors to determine why this VERY unique cell spun up and dropped twisters over and over. I could see from the station, tail-clouds moving (albeit moderately) into a central loci to my NW - I would like to eventually know WHY this occurred. It had to have local factors, INCLUDING GEOGRAPHIC influences, such as channeled vorticity along a river course, that caused this. Of course, the NWS always downplays local factors, but I KNOW THEY DO EXIST!!! In England, for example, in 1980, 187 or so tornadoes in November of that year touched down along a front. The cause was friction along a rolling gust-front that encountered terrain that encouraged pieces of that front to tilt verticle, thus the many small tornadoes. Check this out with the UK organization TORRO - Tornado Research Organisation (sic British spelling) - in their publication "The Journal of Meteorology".

Just many thoughts,
Dog

PS 2.47" total here at my house from yesterday.

DOG:
Thanks for the report! I am not sure if we can nail down exactly why that ONE cell behaved as it did... it was such an odd day! But, yes, mesoscale effects could have had something to do with it. It is hard to say, though.
