Here We Go!

TODAY'S NUMBERS:
HIGH: 90
LOW: 77

What an interesting day! We started off with the scattered thunderstorms in the morning... then a nice dry period through most of the afternoon... and during the late afternoon... thunderstorms exploded over the Kansas City Metro area. There is now a SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH in effect for much of the area through midnight. The culprit... large thunderstorms with the potential for damaging winds and large hail.

And we are still expecting a cooler and potentially WET weekend. It won't rain the WHOLE time... there will be periods of dry weather... but we are expecting WAVES of showers/thunderstorms. Let's take a look to see all the ingredients coming together. First... the main storm:

You can see it over the Northwestern part of the country. That storm will be a very SLOW mover over the weekend. Ahead of it... we will see wave after wave move through. Here is Saturday morning... you can see a wave moving right over us... and more lined up to the West:

So we start Saturday with a good chance of rain. The rain chances will come down a bit for the afternoon/evening hours... but the weekend is not over yet. We will likely see another round of thunderstorms on Sunday.

All of these waves moving through will be interacting with a FRONT that should be just south of us... and as you may notice... there is quite a bit of MOISTURE to work with... it is humid!! Here is a look at the surface tonight so you can see the other ingredients. Here is the frontal boundary (now just north of us)... and the high dew points are the numbers in the green colors:

We will have to watch for a FLOODING potential as some of the thunderstorms could set up to train over the same area. We would love it if you could leave us a comment with your rainfall totals! I have to go now... thunderstorms are going up RIGHT over the city... and this is exciting!! Here is something you might not know about our Forecast Center. It gets really LOUD when there is exciting thunderstorm activity... or when the models are looking exciting. We all get very giddy! I guess we are weather nerds here. ;)

Team,
You all need to find a way that we can post images with our blogs. Based on my last entry, I had some cool maps/graphics to show the setup for this area tonight. Its going to be quite a show!

SCOTT:
As you know, that is not a feature we have in the "comments" section... I have even tried to do it on my end with html, but it doesn't work. The blog is hosted by an outside source... so I am not even sure how to go about changing that. I will ask around, though.

Jamie - Up until 2100 only .15, but I was forced at 2105 into the Ranger Station along the west side of Lake Jacomo to walk around the squad room - cgs too intense and frequent, including what sounded like "superbolts" - staccato type lighting from high bases as well - quite dangerous to be outside. Here's hoping Blue Springs FINALLY gets its share.

Dog

DOG:
Fingers crossed for you, and for Gary (who hasn't seen much yet, either!). Several people told me of the jolting thunder today!

Good Evening, Jamie

With all of the weather events going on and the heaviness of this week as well..my birthday wish to you got sidetracked, Happy Birthday Jamie! =) and just for you....HUGE THUNDERSTORMS tonight..{ don't mention it, ;) } I watched this cell on radar move up NE from Emporia at 10pm and it held in intensity right through the heart of Johnson County. As it approached Leawood, the thing that was pronounced about this perticular storm was the electricity intensity. Jamie..at the height of this..I was counting a bolt about every two seconds for about 10-15 minutes!! and strikes very close to home also..incredible lightening featured in this storm! I'm estimating about an 1" of rainfall accompanied it as well. It looks like a stormy weekend indeed as energy impulses come through finally, holding strength in KC and feeding on ample moisture and a vigerous set of lows..i'm giddy lol =)

Robert

ROBERT:
Hey... thank you so much for the birthday wish!! It was a good year!! :)

And, yes, this could not be a better birthday present! The lightning last night WAS amazing... sort of strobe-light-ish... with such frequency! Saturday morning we'll see a few spotty showers/t-storms... and a good chunk of the day looks like it could be dry... before we increase rain chances overnight again. I will put out an update later today!
Thanks for the rainfall estimate!! 1" and counting...

Let it rain let it rain let it rain! Hoorah. I love this weather. Hope Gary is doing okay. I think getting back to work will be good to get his mind off of things. Thanks to you guys for being the best weather crew in KC!
Tim

TIM:
Glad to hear you got some good rainfall! I thought it was pretty exciting last night... with all the lightning and the torrential downpours!! Gary is well... I think the thunderstorms last night cheered him up a little. :)

Wow, talk about torrential. In the last hour and a half I have gotten 1.72 inches of rain, within 30 minutes after midnight, I was at 1.46 inches, plus the .26 that occurred before midnight. At midnight my weather data resets the totals for the day. Yesterday up to midnight I got .75 inches, with that and the combined 24 hour period thus far, I am standing at 2.29 inches, as I write this since Midnight I have had 1.54 inches.

It's all around us! We asked for it, and thank goodness, it has come. I was quite impressed by this torrential deluge we got, I'm glad conditions were just right for the storms to be over us for once, and not split like my last comment showed. Heh, it'll be nice to see how the rest of the weekend plays out now too. Will all this moisture help feed for more rain?

GVWX:
The moisture in place... ie pooling dew points... will help support more rain. There could be a break this afternoon/evening... but I don't feel safe pulling the POPs all together at this point. Heavier rains could come again tonight... and then on Monday.

We really needed a rain event like this for a long time. Everybody got a good soaking and nobody can complain they got missed. You nailed this one Jamie... got the 3+ inches in 1 night.

JOE:
We are soooo overdue! Where are our pessimists now?? ;)
