Good Rains for Some

Good morning!

Well once again, some of you have missed out on overnight rainfall. It is the same situation as the past few mornings... most of the rain has been to the north and west of Kansas City. Although it did creep slightly further east... bringing just under an inch to downtown Kansas City. Here is a look at rainfall totals as of this morning:

August Rainfall.jpg

Tough forecast for today and tomorrow. The good news... it should be cooler in town, and to the south... where temps soared into the 100s yesterday. Today, I am shooting for a high near 80 degrees. We are starting the day with rain around... and it should taper off as the morning goes on. Later today, isolated thunderstorms are not out of the question. And we have been watching a potential storm for Sunday, as well. Right now... it looks like the best chance of rain from that one would be south of KC. But it is something to watch!

I will post some vacation pics from Seattle later this evening! I hope you have a great day!

Hi Jamie,
As I've been watching the images on ESP last night and this morning, it looks the heaviest rain followed a consistent track along west and north of KC, as you pointed out. But it never opened up southward for those of us in southern Johnson County, KS. Any thoughts on why that keeps happening?
Thanks.

TERRY:
I wish I had a good explanation for you... but it just has not been a good pattern for your area. It just seems the more favorable dynamics have been to the north.

You can write up Grain Valley with .22in. of rain, hope we can get some more of that system that hopefully may track our way, but no surprises, with track records missing our area, kind of getting used to ahaha... ahhh so we'll see how things roll out. Lets hope that Thur-Fri scenario really begins to pan out to some more chances. Thanks for he forecast and bloggin, can't wait to hear more on that system.

MATT:
Thanks for your rainfall report! We still have a rain chance later today... let's keep hoping...

Good Morning Jameie,

SW Lawrence checking in and alas only .19" for us overnight, and now it appears that indeed the rain event is falling apart.

However on the bright side of things at least I don't need to mow this weekend, and we can open the windows to enjoy the cooler weather and Northerly breeze.

Bob

BOB:
I am very thankful for the cooler weather... I can't wait for fall! Thanks for keeping us up-to-date on Lawrence!

Does the hot and dry weather this summer have anything to do with the abundance of what seem to be overly noisy locusts -- they are driving me nuts.

SHERRELYN:
It is funny you ask that... I had been wondering the SAME thing! When I go for walks with my dog... it can get REALLY loud under certain trees! I have looked into this somewhat... and from what I can find... there is NO periodical cicada emergence this year. Soooo I would think these are just the regular "dogday" cicadas. And, I don't think the hot summer has contributed to this... but I do tend to think that our warm winter has something to do with how loud they are! The warmer temps may have allowed more of them to survive than normal.

Or, the other possibility... sometimes periodical cicadas have "stragglers"... cicadas that emerge a few years too late or even too early.

The singing you hear is the males calling for a mate. They truly have an amazing lifecycle... but quite a loud love song!

Looking forward to some rain (hopefully) but more important, I'm from Seattle... Looking forward to your pictures... Take Care

BILL:
We absolutely loved Seattle! The weather was perfect, too. I will post some pictures tonight!

I"m showing it's already 88 degrees here in Lenexa at noon. So obviously it's going to be hotter than forecasted. Is it because there are less clouds than you anticipated?

HI, MARLINA!
Our forecast high temp is typically for KCI. As of 2pm, KCI is only 79 degrees. It could make it up into the lower 80s if the sun is out enough... so we will be close. You are likely hotter in Lenexa bcs the front recently passed through. KCI has been behind the front longer, and is in more cloud cover.

I am very happy, St. Joseph now has had quite a bit of rain!(actually kind of a wet stretch!). I just checked the radar and there is still a large batch of rain out in central kansas and even a few weird little showers redeveloping north of St. Joe. so mabye the places that didn't get much rain will get that batch.
Thanks for your time.
Nick in St. Joe!

NICK:
You are very lucky up in St. Joseph! I know many to the south are jealous of your rainfall amounts. The area of rain in Kansas is heading our way, but it might have a tough time holding together. We'll watch it for this evening.

Another one bites the dust! Last night Gary was forecasting a chance of heavy rain overnight tonight and tomorrow. NWS never had ANY rain in the forecast. Now, after just reading the NWS discussions, it appears like the storm system is not going to produce heavy rain.

Last night, NWS was forecasting heavy rain for most of the area, and we did not get it! Another storm bites the dust! Oh, areas to the north received a good amount of rain, but OVerland Park hardly had any!

I think this weather pattern is stuck! Oh well, Another One Bites the Dust, and we can hope for rain later in the week, but I have my doubts. Every time heavy widespread rain is forecast for the area, it does not happen. It ends up being scattered at best. This weather pattern stinks! I thought the pattern that set up last fall broke? I thought we were going to see a change? ARG. I wish this pattern would change! It has been very ho hum! Oh well. Have a good night.

BRIAN:
The pattern has fallen apart... but we are still stuck in this ho-hum weather situation. The NEW pattern will set up in the fall.

Some areas saw heavy rain.. but as in most situations.. not everyone did. We usually stress that part... that "not everyone will".

Anyway... I have removed rain from Sunday's forecast. The next chance is Fri/Sat.

Jamie - Guess I'm lucky with my miserly .50" in my rain gauge. I'm with Brian - don't count on ANY rain next week here - it will be elsewhere - absolutely nauseating - the chaos following the old pattern's breakdown isn't any better than it was.

BTW, the NHC seems to have crashed and burned on this year's hurricane season...so far. Good.

Dog

DOG:
Glad to hear you got something at your house. You got more than I did!

It has been a very quiet hurricane season, thank goodness. But we are coming into the most active time now.

Hi, Jamie! I wanted to tell you that I had the pleasure of meeting your ADORABLE dog while you were out of town! She walked by with Meredith one night when I was outside playing with my son. She is extremely sweet! I hope you had a great trip!

LINDSAY:
Awwww you are too kind! I always say Mags has the biggest heart... she is a very sweet dog! I hope she didn't jump on you guys, though! ;)
