Very dry weather

Good evening everyone,

It has been very dry, but only in spots. I can imagine it is driving a few of you nuts. Here are some rainfall totals for August:

Kirksville: 6.61"
Topeka: 5.16"
St. Joseph: 4.58"
Chillicothe: 4.36"
KCI airport: 2.32"
Gardner: 1.12"
St. Louis: 0.94"
Sedalia: 0.10"

So, you can see there are some areas all around us that have had enough rain this month. But, others that are so dry right now and for the year well below average. We are making a special graphic for the weathercasts right now.

This weekend was so frustrating. The weekend began with a nice area of rain just sitting over KCI and north between KCI and St. Joseph, and also between Kansas City and Topeka. Topeka had almost 2 inches of rain.

Then, on Sunday, thunderstorms lined up south of Paola near La Cygne in Linn county. That was the storm I was expecting for the area on Sunday, but instead of getting the forecast right the storm was flat and affected only a small area.

It still doesn't look great for rain chances this week. It has rained 24 weeks in a row so for the streak to continue we will have to rely on Friday or Saturday.

Click to enlarge (500 mb flow valid Thursday)

Notice the 500 mb map above. The main jet stream is becoming more active, gradually. We are still in the wrong spot and it appears we may make one more run at 100 degrees. We will announce the winner of the hottest day of summer contest next week.

Have a great week. I am taking a few days off beginning Wednesday.

Gary - You are right - it has rained every day the last year, somewhere...in the world. So should I be excited? I think not. :)

Just giving you a hard time.

Still any hope for that cold front that you talked about a couple blogs ago? Any hint of autumn is welcomed by me.

Marlina,

There have been a few model runs with that first fall cold front on it, but then it isn't on the next run. We should have at least a weak fall cold front within two weeks. I have a feeling on this one.

um..first fall front coming in the next two weeks? well..wouldn't that be close to fall? lol. I think we will get more than we think sooner than we know. That is my vague forecast for the day...its about as true is when I really try. LOL..this pattern is screwed up!

Scott,

The latest data has a lot of rain here Friday and Friday night. And, finally the pattern now really looks very different. And, different things are happening and the tropics may be about to get started.

Boy those Locusts are really making a lot of noise. First Frost in about 6 weeks ? Im really trying hard to get Johnson County Community Collage to add Courses on Weather Forecasting. I would like all who are interested in Weather and want to learn to Contact JCCC and ask them to add Weather Forecasting to their Courses offered. Gary enjoy your days off. Oh my neighbors is building an ark. He thinks its going to be a wet fall.

I hope so Steve!

The graphic that you showed last night was very interesting, its amazing how close drought and non-drought areas can be. It's been really apparent in St. Joe where to me it seems that all summer long we have been literally on the edge of the "dry bubble" and I can recall many nights where loads of rain would fall just north of here and half the time we would miss it, and the other half we would get some of it but not the majority. Just recently though it seems that it has shifted and we are now rather lush and green. Either way I am ready for September, and I hope the winds of change really start to blow soon.
-----------------------------
Nick,

We may show the graphic again tonight at 10 PM. Now if we can get the rain to shift over Kansas City Friday night.

Gary,

Yes, I'm about ready to pull all my hair out too. I've almost lost any hope after this last main rain event went all around us again. Though I did pick up .27 in Grain Valley, I guess it could be worse. It seems like this same pattern of storms forming out west and then moving mainly northeast continues. Until something comes down out of Nebraska and stays together long enough, it doesn't appear anything will change. What do you think?

Enjoy the time off.

Jeff

Jeff,

No matter what the pattern, it has been tough to have an MCS turn our way from Nebraska!

Hold on to your CNN! I think the tropics are ready to finally begin building beyond the little Invests to date. CMC shows a nasty little tropical storm coming up through the Yucitan. Not to mention some lining up now. Will be an interesting next 8-12 weeks.
--------------------------------------
Scott,

We are two weeks away from the peak of hurricane season. It better start up soon.

Gary,
Early Migratory duck season (teal season) starts September 9th. These birds need a canadian cold front to move them down to the KC area. They are finicky about could weather so it does not have to be real strong. In fact that last cool week we had might have been enough to get them to the Dakotas. Any chance we will get a cold front before the 9th? Oh and we could use some significant rain south of KC to flood our marshes. Can you put that in your Forecast?
Thanks
KC Duck Hunters

Ben,

I think there is a very good chance that a fall like cold front will be here by the 9th of September. But, we just haven't picked the date yet.

Gary,

You gave above (and often on the newscasts give) rainfall totals for a variety of places. I know you do mention Overland Park at times but often it seems like we hear more about the Plaza and Olathe. Is that just my imagination? I live just south of Corporate Woods in OP. Is there any way to know what my rainfall total is for August and for the year and how that relates to normal for the immediate vicinity?

Andy
---------------------
Andy,

Normally you would get around 3.5" in August. Overland Park is sitting at just over 1" this month. But, Friday has potential.

gary... you work ALOT of hours so i hope you get some rest and enjoy the extended time off!

Just want you to know, my thoughts and best wishes are with you and Windy.

I had to make that big D for my aging Scotty terrier about fifteen years ago, still miss him, occasionally wonder if I couldn't have done a few more things to make his life fun in return for the joy he brought to me.

Thank you for sharing Windy with us, and look forward to more of Stormy.

Gary,

We are so sorry to hear about Windy. Loosing a dog is like loosing a family member-as they are a part of the family. Our thoughts are with you.
Windy "the weather dog" will always be remembered for all the joy she brought to
your listeners and the hundreds of children she made happy.
Take care,

I know how it feels to lose a furry friend and how much they are missed. I put my little buddy down as I could not stand to see him suffer. You did the right thing.
Best Wishes,

Gary, I cried when I heard about Windy. I lost my precious Wheaten Terrier last year and she died just before I decided she had to be put down. I know exactly what you are going through. I lost my husband, too earlier in the year and now I, like you, have another dog in my life to help me through all of the loss. God bless you and I look forward to your return.

Posted by: Pam DeWitt at August 23, 2006 10:37 PM

Gary,

I want you to know you are in my thoughts and prayers. I went thru the same thing a year ago last January. My dog was the same age as Windy was. I was taking her to have her put down as she was suffering but she passed away in my arms on the way to the vets. I agree with the person who said you did the right thing. It is never an easy decision but you were right, you did not want her to suffer. She is in a much better place now, and happy and healthy and is looking down on you as your guardian angel. I hope Stormy and the other dog, whose name I can't remember right now, are doing ok. People do not always realize that the other fur kids suffer the loss too.

Gary, I am sorry for your loss. I know how close you become with your pets especially after so many years. I have two dogs I have belonged to for 14 years. I also will be shaken when it is their time. God Bless.

My condolences on your loss. This is a very hard thing to go through. I am very sad today hearing about your loss. You gave Windy are very good life. I'm sure your 2 other little guys will help you through this tough time.

So sorry to hear of your loss. What a team you two were! I know the loss of that bond is very hard. I have 2 fur kids and one is turning 11 next week. I only hope that she can make it as long as Windy did. This leaves a lump in my throat thinking of what you are going through. God bless you. I know you are surrounded by many friends to help you through this. Thanks for sharing the pictures, and sharing your life with KC. Dogs leave paw prints on our heart.

Dear Gary, I just wanted to tell you how sad I was to learn of Windy's departure from this earth. I know you will miss her greatly and that your heart is heavy. She knows that you were the best friend that a person could have. She wasn't just a pet, she was your best friend, your confidate, the one and only friend that gives you unconditional love.
I followed you and Windy from Channel 4 so many years ago when you went to Channel 41. Having Windy assist you with the weather was more meaningful than any of the other promos in town.
May you find comfort in your memories of Windy. She may be gone but she'll never be forgotten.
I've been down the road that you just traveled. I know how difficult it was for you to make that decision. A decision made out of love for your very best friend.
God Bless and keep you.
