Email from Gary!
Good afternoon, everyone! Gary is on vacation in Las Vegas this week... he will be back to work on TUESDAY. But even though he is out there having fun... he is still thinking about us. AND spending money on us. :) He posted this blog comment this morning:
Hey weather team,
I am up early in Vegas. It has been a great trip so far and I am WINNING believe it or not. I won $200 (blackjack) this morning when I went up to look at the weather data. I am staying at Mandalay Bay and they charge $15 for using a computer for a half hour. What a rip off.
The weather pattern continues to be in massive transition and there is no organization to it at all. So, we are almost to that exciting time of the year when the weather pattern does begin to organize, but not yet. It may be quite boring now, but let's hope a good pattern sets up. We will know within 5 weeks. The pressure is on.
The Mr. Olympia fitness expo begins today and I am going to the event for motivation. I have worked out every day while on vacation here and I am very relaxed.
Keep up the great work! I am heading out to the pool.
Gary

We are actually going to have some pool-weather of our own here in Kansas City! We are still thinking around 80 for Saturday... and then upper 80s to near 90 are possible Sunday/Monday!! Record highs on those days are:
Sunday: 92
Monday: 94
... so I don't think we'll be setting any new records. But we could be close!
Meantime... I got the email below from our weekend anchor, Keith King. His friend has been taking care of a stray puppy... and now they are trying to find her a home:
She is a 4 month old black lab mix (the vet wasn't too sure what the cross was) with a great personality and needs a really really good home w/ lots of room to run. She has been absolutely wonderful w/ my son who's 6 and his friends. We have her pretty much potty trained but she he still needs her shots and to be spade. If you know anyone looking for a new little companion please give me a call or email. Honestly, I would keep her if I had more time and a yard... she is WONDERFUL!!!

What a sweetheart! If anyone is interested... email Keith King at king@nbcactionnews.com!
That's all for now... it's pretty quiet around here!

Devin, I am with you on your previous blog, and your timetable and the GFS folds into my thoughts. I will be curious to see what the GRC is and how it varies from mine, and what the impact of the split jet/El Nino has.
If the weather team is right, we are both wrong and our points are invalid. Not sure I am quite ready to concede yet until I see the fingerprints of the next GRC.

Wow, it is quite discouraging to how the weather pattern has evolved over the past couple of weeks. It seems the pattern was heading in a more positive direction at the end of August/early September. Now the big ridge is back, and with it the heat and dryness that is familiar but unwelcome.
I know the conventional wisdom here is that we truly don't know until we see what weather pattern sets up between mid-Oct. and mid-Nov. I'm trying to stay positive that we WILL have a better (=wetter and cooler) in the year ahead. Based on the current ridge that is back in place, about the most positive I feel now is that surely the next year can't be worse that the past, and it is "hard to fall out of a hole".
DOUG:
I know... the last thing we all want to see is an upper ridge right now... unfortunately... that WILL be the case over the next several days. And we have been saying all season... the next pattern HAS to be better than this one!

This is exactly why you guys are my favorite weather team! I love it that Gary is so passionate about weather that he will drop in to say hello on his vacation. And you guys are always on the same page... sometimes when watching other stations... they are all over the place. I can watch your team and you all are saying something similar. Thanks for working together so well!
Sara
Sara,
Thanks for the compliment.

Jamie,
Wow, there are so many things that the models are indicating that will keep us very warm for MANY days.
The split flow continues, the weak trough energy in the west will get cut off for many days from the flow, and a ridge in the southeast will strengthen. I do not think I have ever seen so many days in a row forecasted by the models with southwest winds. We had to wait until November last year to receive a freeze. It might be the same way this year. It is still dry and I am awaiting the upcoming GRC :)
Devin
Devin,
The models in the day 10-15 are all over the place. This is the time frame we begin to look for the beginning of the GRC. Lets hope we get a good pattern this year.

Greetings all:
The weather pattern surely has to get better...or not. As I have pointed out before, there have been drought periods lasting up to 6-8 years (New England in the 1960s, southern Plains in the 1930s, and again in the 1950s). There really isn't much in the way of rationale to think this current 2-3 year (or more) drought won't continue, or get worse. One can hope, but the historic record somewhat argues the other way. Hope not, really I do.
For September using Lees Summit temps and my rain-gauge (a thoroughly depressed gauge in need of therapy - valium, what-not)here are the average hi and lo and total rainfall:
76 56 1.34"
And now, for that "marvelous" total, here is a BIG YAWN!!!!
Later,
Dog
Dog,
I am with you. There has not been much excitement in the weather. Although, we have had our moments. The 90 degree weather is somewhat exciting to me, considering it is October. We are just days away from the beginningof our new winter pattern set up. We can only hope!
