Severe weather threat well off to the east
Good morning everyone,
The National Weather Service put out a statement yesterday that painted a huge severe weather threat for the region. Our weather team was a bit baffled based on the data we were looking at. We still have to monitor the situation closely today but the deep moisture is well off to the east early today and this should limit the severe weather threat to central and eastern Missouri as the second storm dropping into the Rockies shears out tonight and moves across early Saturday. So, we should have a beautiful day.

Above, you can see how the high dewpoints are located well to the south and east early today. I circled (or put a sqare around them) the dewpoint temperatures. It is early this morning but this shows where the deep moisture has shifted off to the east. We will be tracking the surface conditions all day. The higher dewpoints may be pulled back to the west as the second storm approaches. This could lead to a band of rain early Saturday morning. The rest of the weekend should be dry!

Woohoo Gary!!!
This morning I checked our rain gauge and it had 2 inches of rain from yesterday and last night. My husband had put grass seed and fertilizer down in our yard, so we are thankful for what we got. I just hope that poor gentleman in Blue Springs who posts here got some of this rain :)
Could you please settle a bet for me? How is "Indian summer" defined? Dinner is riding on this one. I say it's after a frost and it warms up, my dad says a frost has nothing to do with it, that it's just warmer during the "fall" season. We agreed to let you settle this ;) Thanks Gary! Have a great day!
DONNA:
That is absolutely wonderful that you got so much rain! One of the highest totals I have seen, for sure!
People use the term "Indian Summer" to describe a warm/mild stretch of dry weather... that occurs in the fall. It does not HAVE to be after a frost... but it does TYPICALLY come after a frost or a cold period. I guess dinner is on you!? ;)

WOW yesterday was pretty cool, it rained most of the day, then the rain stopped and the wind blasted! The clouds on the satellite picture did look similar to a hurricane or tropical storm.
Out of curiousity what do you think is the strongest that these "Hurricane Like" low pressure areas that we sometimes get can get Pressure/windspeed, just curious.
Thanks for your time, Nick in St. Joe!

Nick,
It did look like a tropical system, but it was definitely a cold core system which is really the exact opposite. These storm systems can still produce 40-60 mph winds and pressures down to 29.10" or even lower.

We have never have any serious fun weather. It's either gorgeous and warm (yay I love that) or it goes right to cold and dreary. Severe weather has just blown us off.

Jeri,
Do you remember March 12th? Have a great weekend.

Hello,
When do you expect the rain to begin tonight? Any t-storms or just showers?
-----------------
Ben,
Just showers and around 5 AM. It is still a bit questionable since there is nothing there right now.

Wow!!! A WHOPPING .28" from this HUGE storm - go figure - it's Blue Springs. Only 1.17" so far this month here - NOT a return to a wet pattern for us. Good news is, no mowing this weekend (Mon-Tue). The YAWNS continue...

Doglet,
Yes, it was amazing how it rained like crazy on my way home last night but it didn't quite get to Blue Springs.

Gary,
I noticed you increased POP to 50% on Saturday. When does that time out? We have soccer at 8am, are we going to be wet?
Thanks,
Todd
---------------
Todd,
It appears that if it does rain it would be over before noon. Have a great weekend.

I'm not in your immediate area (eastern CO) but enjoy your web site and blog. Although I'm thankful that the weather has cooled, I do not like what I'm seeing with the storms the last couple of week-ends -- wind and a little bit of rain but not really digging in to give us widespread precip. This is a lot like we've seen for the past year - I sure hope the year ahead isn't a contination of this pattern. In northern CO we are (unfortunately) still on track to have the driest year on record (just barely over 5" for the year so far).
Thanks

Doug,
We are so way overdue for an exciting and wetter pattern. The weather pattern right now has very little to do what will be setting up next month. A unique pattern will set up. Hopefully we will finally have a good one. So, at this moment don't worry about the last two storm systems.
