| A Saturday storm system! »
A great Friday, but then what?
Good morning,
It looks like a great Friday. Expect mostly sunny conditions today and with a southwest wind it could get close to 70 degrees this afternoon.
A storm approaches from the west tonight, but it is rather strange. The vorticity is sort of channelled through the upper level flow. If it is a bit more organized then it will rain a few hours Saturday, but if it is less organized then it won't rain much. I lean towards the more organized solution. After the new data comes out this morning I will make a more confident forecast.
I will update this entry after around 11 AM.
Here is the 11 AM update: New data confirms our 100% chance of rain Saturday
Click to enlarge (NAM forecast 700 mb flow valid 7 AM Sat)
The above map shows the 700 mb flow, around 10,000 feet up. The green shading is the relative humidity forecast through a large layer of the lower atmosphere. So, when it is dark green then it is saturated. The red lines show where the air is forecast to be rising. Notice that the Kansas City area is near the center of rising motion by morning as the upper level system approaches.
Click to enlarge (NAM forecast surface valid 1 PM Saturday)
This map shows the suface forecast for Saturday at 1 PM. The blue dotted line is the 540 thickness line. This is the 50/50 line for snow prediction. If you are below 540 thickness it usually snows. The cold air is arriving about the time the rain is shutting down. If the upper level storm is a little slower, stronger and further south then we could see our first snowflakes or some sleet Saturday afternoon.

Gary,
There will be some scouts out there camping tonight. At what point do you think it will rain on Saturday? Just trying to figure out how much rain gear the boys will need. You are always so accurate, I figure you'll get pretty close to nailing it!
------------------
Sheree,
Thanks. Right now I am expecting rain to develop just after sunrise, or definitely by noon.

It's Friday in the big town! Hope you have a great day today and hope we end up with a cold rainy saturday... man. I'm a sad person to want cold rain! :) Oh well.
------------------------------------
Dave,
I want the cold rain too, and it looks likely!

Hello Gary,
As far as Saturday if everything falls into place are we looking at snow accumulations, or any problems with the sleet.
Thanks for your time!
Anne
------------------------------
Anne,
The temperature will likely be too warm for either wintery precipitation type, but if it did happen it would only be mixed in. So, just wet.

Gary,
I read on 19 Oct blog that you would be interested in recruiting weather spotters. I live in Fayetteville, east of KC and North of Warrensburg and would be interested since I read your blogs daily. Can you guide me in the right direction to give you accurate feedback from our small corner of your viewing area?
Fayetteville Jim
-------------------------
Jim,
We would love to have you as one of our spotters. All you need to is let us know your rainfall totals, and when you see some threatening weather to let us know. We will be developing our spotter data base early next year.

I have a confession. Sometimes, when I want it to snow really badly I will watch every weather station in town and choose which forecast I like the best.
I am always a little disappointed when your timing is more accurate then another stations and instead of snow we get rain. I'm sorry. :-(
-----------------------
Shawn,
Don't worry. At least you know we will always tell you exactly what we think will happen.

Hello Mr. Lezak, difficult forecast for tomorrow eh.
So there still is atleast a slim chance of seeing some snowflakes in the area?
Another storm showing up anytime soon after this weekends?
----------------
Ben,
Yes! There is another storm following this one towards the middle or end of next week. I like the trend.

Your forcast for tomorrow sounds good to me, and even though the frozen precip. probably won't make to us, it is neat that it is getting closer!
The only question that I have it that on the GFS model that I just looked at(I'm not sure if the website I used had the most up to the minute data) still had an area of rain gliding by just to the north of St. Joe and then the next batch seemed to develop and slide just south of St. Joe, the other models didn't seem to show this.I was just wondering if you thought that St. Joe could be in a "weak spot" for precip tomorrow, I hope not:)
Thanks for your time.
Nick in St. Joe!
------------------------
Nick,
It is good the models have shown the weak spot there. They will be wrong so maybe you will be one of the heavier spots. I hope so.

Gary,
This weekend is the Heritage days festival in Warsaw. Lots of outdoor fun. Do you think the rain will be later getting there? How long do you think it will last down there?
-----------------------
Dee,
It may rain for a few hours, so it doesn't look good. Let's see how ESP looks in the morning.

Gary,
When are you going to post your findings on the new data as to whether or not it is going to rain tomorrow?
Thanks,
Todd
---------------------------------
Todd,
I should do a post now. The latest data is quite impressive for a nice steady Saturday rain.

Michael,
There is a slight chance that snowflakes will mix in by Saturday evening. It does look wet Saturday.

Gary,
Any new thoughts on that late week storm? Some of the newest data suggests it might be a pretty big storm. What do you think?
thanks,
Andy
---------------------------
Andy,
No real thoughts other than I am very happy that we are able to have a storm followed by another storm. It is too early for any specifics.

Hello Mr. Lezak,
If the storm goes south of here as you mentioned at the 5pm news cast, wouldnt it be colder than if it were to go to our north?
Does it look like the precip will be gone berfore it gets the chance to switch to snow?
-----------------
Ben,
If it were just a bit colder I would be going for snow. But, the temperatures seem way to warm near the surface. It would have to be down to near 35 or 36 degrees before we see any snow and this may not happen until after the precipitation ends. We will be watching this very closely.

Gary - The Dog just viewed the 18 UTC GFS, and similar to last night, though a tad faster, it brings an open wave into Kansas and bombs it into what looks like a closed low, very different to much of last year. It ALSO does something similar to an open wave by Nov 5th, bombing it out conveniently BEFORE it gets to us. Will it happen? Who knows. But, I don't recall seeing anything like this last year much on the models, and not one after another. Am I dreaming? Or is it delirium tremors????
Dog

Storm Dog,
You don't remember seeing anything like this last year? Of course not. These storm systems are fascinating and getting stronger.
Have a great weekend! Enjoy the rain.
