Falling Temps
Good morning!
Right on cue... rain and colder temperatures for today. After hitting a high of 71 degrees yesterday... we have likely already hit today's high. A cold front is moving through... and temperatures will FALL during the afternoon hours. We'll also experience gusty northwest winds... so it will be quite a RAW day.
Here is a look at this morning's 500mb flow... you can see the upper level disturbance that is causing the rain:

As long as that wave is to our west... we will continue the chance of rain. The main disturbance should be through later this afternoon... so eventually the rain chances will come to an end. You can see on Sunday, the wave is definitely east of us... so we will be DRY for the Chiefs/Chargers game:

BUT notice we are still in the TROUGH... so that means cooler temperatures will continue. Sunday's highs should be in the upper 40s, with the brisk northwest wind continuing! Bundle up if you're heading to Aarowhead!!
Have a great day!

Right now the winds are out of the north with rain falling and it is 42 degrees! I am happy, Gary nailed it again,(Of course we all knew he would!)
Nick in St. Joe!
NICK:
I'm just glad I don't have to be out IN the cold rain all day! Those winds are really whipping... all the leaves are coming down from my tree!

Hello Mrs. Jarosik,
Right now its 40 in Leavenworth.
Is there a chance that we may see some snow flakes in the precip before it all ends?
Is there a chance of another round of rain in the afternoon?
BEN:
The chance of rain continues into the late afternoon... then it should dwindle. As for snowflakes... I really don't think we'll see any here in KC!

Already .7 of rain here in Greenwood! Will we get in inch? I would guess yes with the way its going now.
Nothing worse than a cold rain, but.. at least its catching us up on the year.
Tim in GW
TIM:
You may get closer to that inch mark! The highest amount I have seen so far is .81" in Olathe. And we should get a few more tenths!

I love thunder in the fall! We're sitting at .63 of an inch so far here in SE Lee's Summit.
MIKE:
Today's one of those days that makes you want to spend a cozy afternoon indoors watching football with family and friends. Can you tell I am daydreaming as I sit at work? ;)
Thanks for the report from Lee's Summit!

Gary/Jamie one of the other stations has this friday with snow/rain mix...I know it's 6 days away so it'll probably be 80 and sunny, but what are your thoughts?
CHRIS:
It looks different each day... but I am not seeing that at this point!

Brrrr! It's certainly a cold rain right now! I continue to check here in hopes the forecast numbers will INCREASE for tomorrow.
My family and I are planning a trip to World's of Fun tomorrow for the Octoberfest activities.
...we tried to go last Sunday, but it was raining
So, how about it? Any chance that it may turn out to be warmer then predicted on Sun.? Waiting until the last Sun. of the month is too much of a gamble for me!
Thanks! Keep up the great work!
Mary
MARY:
It is going to be a chilly day tomorrow! I am going to the Chiefs game with Gary... and we will definitely be wearing our layers! :) The only way it would be a few degrees warmer (maybe lower 50s) is if we see more sunshine... but it looks like the clouds will be winning out.

Hi Jamie,
We've had a around one inch of rain here in south Raytown today. It is good to see the rain again.
Kristi
KRISTI:
That IS great news! We have more rain chances this week, too. Thanks for your report!

Jamie,
I think that the GFS model is lacking consistency for the possible storm at the end of next week. The 6Z had 850 temps of
-6 after the storm moved by but the 12Z model is now much warmer. The EMCWF model has been more consistent and keeps the storm has a positively tilted wave. The models seem to have be very inconsistent after day 4 this time of year!
Devin
DEVIN:
Soooooo TRUE!! They flip-flop all the time... which is why we don't really want to bite on one solution just yet.

Jamie,
A few more tenths was right. Ended up with .95 of an inch in Greenwood.
In a previous blog comment you said you were at work mid-afternoon -- with their being newscasts in the early morning at late evening, are you pulling 12+ hour days on the weekends? Just curious how the scheduling works.
Tim in GW
TIM:
Thanks for the update! Yes, I work 12-hour days on the weekends. I come in during the EARLY morning to do cut-ins to the Today Show... and to tape new Weather Plus updates. Then I come back around 2pm to prepare for the 5pm/10pm shows. But I have tomorrow OFF, and I will enjoy sleeping in! :)

Wouldn't THAT make Gary happy!

Here in Emma, MO (on I-70 at the Lafayette/Saline County line), we've picked up 1.35" of much needed rain. Subsoil moisture's gotten quite low, so these past couple slow-moving, slow-raining systems have really helped.
WALTER:
That is wonderful to hear! Thanks for the update from Emma!

What si the forecasted low tonight. The way your graphics are set up I cannot tell what tonights lows will be.
JEFF:
Tonight's low is not on the 7-day graphic... we do a separate weather page for that in our shows. We'll be near freezing.

Looks like we topped out at .91 inches in northeast Olathe according to my weather station. Indian Creek was way up.

Elaine,
We are catching up on rainfall, but we need a bit more.
