Last COLD Morning... and Weekend Changes
Goooood Morning, everyone!
This should be our last COLD morning for awhile! Once again, we have dropped into the 20s and 30s around the area... but as a storm approaches, we'll begin to see a warm-up take hold. For today... expect plenty of sunshine, and highs in the mid-to-upper 60s. Overnight, clouds will begin to increase ahead of our next storm... the clouds and southerly winds should hold us up in the 40s.
Here is a look AT that storm on this morning's satellite image... it's over the Southwestern US:

All thinking is the same as yesterday (see Gary's blog). It's a tough forecast... but we think we should at least get SOME rain around here! (That would be Sunday and Monday for the rain chances) And we desprately NEED the rain. Here are our deficits for the month and for the year:
FOR OCTOBER: -1.28"
FOR 2006: -8.89"
So the chance is coming... but today looks fabulous... I hope you get to enjoy it!!

Jamie,
With the overnight low temperatures ranging from 23F to 36F it is amazing how difficult it is to predict low temperatures in this area. All of the observing stations at lower elevations in rural areas cooled into the 20s but the urban locations had a hard time getting lower than the mid 30s with only a light wind. Is their a technique to measure the urban heat island using infrared technology? I am also looking forward to the potential for rain next week also.
Devin
DEVIN:
I know... quite the temp spread this morning. The outlying areas can drop off pretty far if it's clear with light winds... that's what happened this morning! We don't have to wait until next week to see rain... we'll likely see some Sunday and Monday.

How is the track of that storm in the southwest trending?

It looks like it's coming right at us. We should see some pretty good rain from this storm!

Depends upon what your definition of "cold" is doesn't it? Seems like a very subjective word to me. Someone just back from Iraq would probably put on a parka with a temp in the 40's. As fer the rain... if yer that desperate why not rustle some clouds? You might use cloud seeding or build some weather drones to fly to Lake Michigan and burn off some water with lasers and then fly it back. You'd be able to steal all the water you want from the lake so long as you don't steal it at a faster rate than the St. Lawrence River can desalinate the salty oceanic waters that will replace it. With global warming melting all of that fresh water off of the glaciers up north you ought to be able to go gangbusters.
What say you?

WILLIAM:
Aw, you're always good for a laser discussion! When I say "COLD"... I am speaking RELATIVE to THIS AREA. ie, compared to the past couple of nights.

It looks colder behind the mid-week cold front... but right now, no chance of snow. It will come before long... be patient! :)

Jamie,
How about the snow in NY?! That is crazy that it came so early.
Sara
SARA:
I KNOW!! My aunt, uncle and cousins live in Buffalo... and they say the city is completely paralized. Nobody has power... and they say it could be that way for a week!! So they are basically just sitting around the house, bundled up... and they have to keep a fire going to stay warm. (thank goodness it's not THAT COLD there... highs have been close to 50 degrees).
BUT the warmer temperatures are bringing about ADDITIONAL problems... because of the snow MELTING!! Flooding has become a concern. And since sump pumps require electricity... my family and their neighbors have been bailing water out of their basements. NOT a good situation!!!!

I see you have 63 for a high for next Saturday, I was wondering if temps are gonna warm up next weekend, or any warmer weather in near future, After the mid-week cold front. Thank You
Anne
ANNE:
It is still a loooong way off, but right now it looks like we moderate a bit next weekend. Not crazy-warm, but comfortable.
