How about some snow?

9:40 AM update........

Don't give up. The radar echoes are increasing. I know I am looking like a fool here, but Brett and Jeremy just told my our Adonis computer model is giving 8 or 9 inche to the south side and 3 inches up north.

The new GFS has 6 to 12 inches here. Let's watch radar. Sorry about this flip flopping today. Let's watch the radar trends. I LIKE WHAT I AM SEEING. A wave is breaking off from the upper low and heading our way.

Gary,

Can you give us a timeframe for all of this activity? We're trying to decide if we need to cancel our 6pm event for this evening.

Thanks.
Emily
......................

Emily,

It depends on where you live. The snow should begin by this afternoon and continue tonight. The roads were a little slippery this morning...so the snow will add to the problems.

Gary,
I have never seen so much in the way of model uncertainty hours before a winter storm. The model inconsistency is making everyone frustrated. I am still hoping for decent snow totals, especially south of the Missouri River.
Devin
...................

Devin,

The models are always a bit different before a storm(even this close to the event). The wide range of snow totals that the models are putting out is the tough part...a 50 mile shift either way will make a HUGE difference in snow totals.

I am watching it like a hawk. I got down on my knees and prayed. I live out in Lee's Summit. I really want to use my new snow blower that I only once last year. Please! Please!

Hans OUT!
..................

Hans,

The chances of more than 6" of snow are much greater towards Lee's Summit are areas just SE of there. You will get to use your snow blower...don't worry.

Snow very close to KC at this hour just hope it comes in soon!

.................

Charles,

The radar is a bit misleading. The leading edge and very near it is not reaching the ground. The snow needs to overcome some dry air before the snow will start reaching the ground.

This is driving me bonkers!!!! :) I know you guys must be going crazy as well. Hoping for lots of snow in Johnson Co, KS! Thanks for keeping us updated!!!

.....................

The storm hasn't driven us nuts...just the computer models. Now that the storm is beginning to show its face it looks like some good snow for the area. As long as the dry air is overcome you will see plenty of snow.

Jeremy, welcome to Kansas City! Hope you got settled in during the past few weeks of calm weather, cause the fun of challenging forcasts is just beginning. Does it look like East of y'all, the Warrensburg Higginsville area, is gonna be hit hard? Last night Gary painted a picture with the heaviest band right over my house. My gut tells me the I-44 corridor will be hit the hardest with just an inch or two for us. What say you?

Fayetteville Jim
...................

Jim,

Gary's thinking from last night is looking to hold true today. After a nervous time this morning the snow totals look to be very close to Gary's forecast from last night...maybe a little less...but not too much. Really...what is the difference between 6" versus 8" or 10" versus 12". Any amount of snow of 2"+ will cause major headaches on the roadways. Keep in mind the air temps are in the teens...so this will be very fluffy snow...which piles up fast!

Jeremy Nelson

Gary,

Jeremy just said that the dry air needs to be overcome. That is like the biggest enemy of these types of storms. It gets us everytime. I am not going to hold my breath. I just hope we get something out of this! You are doing a WONDERFUL job!
.................

Brian,

I mentioned that the dry air needs to be overcome...but that is the case with almost every storm. The initial precip. evaporates as it falls because the column isn't saturated. This will occur today. I brought this point up because some people are getting excited looking at the radar. The radar LOOKS like snow is on the west side of KC. But in reality the snow likely won't begin until this afternoon because of the dry air. The column is being saturated to our southwest...this is proven by the snow reports coming out of Kansas. So yes we need to overcome the dry air...but the process is underway.

Jeremy, my parents are visiting this weekend from Sherburn. They plan on leaving tomorrow morning. What is the farthest north on I-35 that you see the snow reaching? Liberty? Cameron? Bethany?

P.S. If you won the free throw contest in Sherburn prior to 1985, I probably was there running it.
..................

Joe,

The snow may reach St. Joe if the current trend continues...but they will likely see around 1". It was in probably 1989-91 time free...I guess we just missed each other.

Welcome to the lower midwest!!! To be a meteorologist here, your middle name must be houdiny!! Now you see it, now you don't!

Leonard,

Houdiny was from close to my last weather job...I think his museum is in Appleton, WI. The snow will show itself this afternoon thru tonight. Everyone needs to be patient...good things come to those who wait.

Hi Jeremy,

So are you saying as of this moment right now, it looks like KC will get a significant amount of snow? BTW... I live in Linwood, KS - what's it look like for me?

Thanks,
Carrie
...................

Carrie,

Considering our recent past winters...3" or more would be pretty significant. The metro will see significant snow.

Worst storm in the Kansas City area in History? That sounds very sensational and misleading don't you think? I don't mind a weatherman missing a prediction or having variables change, but these kinds of ratings grabs make me mistrust the weather and the local news all together.

jlrobson2002@yahoo.com
Jarrod
------------------

Jarrod,

We should wait for it to happen before making a statement like that! You are correct, but I didn't do it to just grab ratings. I wish I could take that statement back. Let it happen first. It still could happen.

Is this still looking to be a 10"+ event for KCI area and up towards east of Smithville Lake?? Thanks, Richard

10" is not likely at KCI...but possible in the southern Metro.

Once again all hype from the weather dept. Scare everone into closing down for the day and once again nothing....Its the same thing every year. Brett and Gary should be appologizing to the public left and right on every broadcast for the next week

...............

Scott,

Let's wait and see how the storm plays out. The 12Z GFS gives downtown KC 1.02" of liquid. Last night Gary mentioned that the heavy snow would not occur until late Thursday.

Thanks for your take...

More good news...if you like snow. Wichita is reporting heavy snow and Emporia is reporting moderate snow as of 12 noon! And the snow continues to track NE! Please report any snow start times to the blog.

Thanks for all the comments and positive thoughts. Gary will be in around 1pm.

So when did the last runs of models come out? I know we had one at 8 AM and that is when Gary said he thought it might miss us all together. Is it looking like we will still get a good amount of snow based on the new runs?

................

The 8am NAM run scared us a bit...but the GFS run and the current trend on satellite and radar are VERY promising. Keep thinking snow!

Jeremy:

I was just going to report that!!! Snow in Emporia!!! It also appears on radar that the northern edge has expanded further North-if this is the trend, then Gary's St. Joe line is spot on!!! Welcome to the area!!! In reality, as I'm sure you know, winter weather is tough to come by here-I told Gary and I really believe this: forecasting winter weather for the Topeka/Kansas City corridor has to be one of if not the toughest jobs in the contenental US-too many things can go wrong-dry air, wobbles, warm air getting pushed into the upper layers....almost impossible to get a handle on!!!! Again, great job by you guys-you stuck with it and even this morning said there is still a chance this would hit even with the Nam solution. Please try to ignore the negative comments-you guys have a tough job this time of year for sure!!!!

..............

Thanks for the feedback. If anyone has snow pictures from this storm, please email them to Gary or the station!

I am listening to 98.1 and they say the snow advisor has been dropped and everyone in the listening area will get 2-5 inches if any, does that seem to be what should happen. I live in Raymore so hopefully I will be on the 5 side.

.................

Heavy Snow Warning is still in effect...I just checked. The warning will be kept or changed by the NWS by 3-4pm. That will be the next advisory update. But regardless of what advisory is in effect...snow is on the way. Get ready for poor road conditions for late today and tonight.
