How much snow will fall this winter?

Good evening,

We are very busy putting our winter forecast together. I will have a full blog about it on Friday. How much snow do you want?

Gary,

How about two feet? Double last year would be great!

Can you give us a hint? More or less than last year?

Tim,

You may be in the right range!

Hello Mr. Lezak,
Personally I hope we get close to, or above average this year, because last year was just sad.
definitely love the snow.

Any chance of seeing any snowflakes on Friday or Saturday? (Here in the KC area?)
----------------------

Ben,

I doubt we will see any Friday, but at this time of year we better watch it closely.

Gary

You kno we all want a LLLOOOTTT of snow.lol. I also wanted to kno if one or two of the models are predicting snow, how many days before you would say it on the air?

Thanks
Andy
-------------------
Andy,

If I think the models are right and a snowstorm is 10 days away then I WILL GO FOR IT. This season, I know of four instances where someone has told me about snow in the forecast from some other sources. I just didn't see it so this is why I didn't mention it. I will go for it if it makes sense to me.

I want to experience something historical, that would rival the 25" snow in 24 hour record. We have missed some monster snows since I've lived here, which goes back to 1990. Southern Missouri had 18"+ a couple of times, South Central Nebraska had 18"+, the big 1999 storm that materialized just east of us and hit Columbia, St. Louis, and eventually Chicago with almost 24". That was tough to stomach. I still have the forecasts from various stations prediciting potentially copius amounts and we ended up wtih very little. They were talking about the potential of up to 20" and 4-6' drifts. I want a snow that makes world news, that causes my jaw to drop.
-----------------
David,

It may happen this year. You never know. I see some potential.

I would like to see some where around 24 to 36 inches of snow.
-----------------
Paul,

So would I! It may happen.

I want 50" in a year, and 4'2" in a day!!

How much snow does buffalo get? I'll take that please.
---------------------
Dave,

How about what some of the ski areas get? 350 inches.

just a thought, would we have a record high had the sensor at KCI not been changed? hmm...
---------------
Miranda,

It would have been 84 degrees yesterday if they didn't "fix" the thermometer. And, yesterday it was 69 degrees at KCI while it was 75 everywhere else. Maybe the fix was too good.

I want at least 25 inches of snow. I would like to have a snowy winter, with it on the ground, not really a big snow storm with 8 inches then nothing rest of the month.

Posted by: Keri Worley at November 8, 2006 10:24 PM

***************
As much as possible, but I would be content with about 23 inches, spread out in 3 to 6 inch storms, spread out enough to get a decent amount of storms with a decent amount of accumulation in each!
A 60 inch season would by my dream though!
Nick in St. Joe!(conunting down in HOURS now:))
----------------------------
Nick,

60 inches has happened once in Kansas City history. So, there is hope.

Gary,
I am hoping for between 20-30 inches of snow this winter. If we have close to normal temperatures there will be more opportunities for snow than we had most of last winter. I am not sure how often the Pacific Jet Stream will dominate compared to last year. Zonal flow is usually bad for the plains. (not much potential for arctic cold) El Nino will likely have some impact, but probably not too much.
Devin
-----------------------
Devin,

I know for sure that the "Storm Generating Machine" that was across the Gulf of Alaska last year is NOT there this year.

Gary

Posted by: Devin at November 8, 2006 10:42 PM

Gary...

The amount we want isn't going to happen around here but if we could push 40" that would be nice and is at least somewhat within reason....Bring it on!!!

Matt Maisch
-----------------------
Matt,

That would be a lot of snow! We would have to have one huge snowstorm for that total to have a chance.

Gary

Gary

when was that chance of snow you talked about on the 10 newscast? since you said something about it in the newscast, does that mean it might happen? What did the new data say that made you confident enought to talk about over the news? What are your thought about the snow chance you mentiond?
Thanks
Andy
------------------------------------------
Andy,

I just liked what I saw in the data. It is a week away, but it has more of a look in what I think will happen this winter a few times. But, we only average one inch of snow during November.

Hey, Gary!
I'm going to have to go against the status quo. I'd love to keep up the relatively anemic snowfall totals we've been experiencing over the past 5 years or so. How much weight do you give Pacific Ocean temperatures in determining your winter forecast? No offense, as you seem to be a fan of snow, I will hope we eternally remain in the positive phase of the so-called "Arctic Oscillation"! It'll be a cold day when we go the other way! I'd be curious to hear your thoughts in why we've been in the positive phase most of the time for the last 30 years and whether we'll continue that trend. I enjoy reading your blog and it is a great forum for all us "weather nuts" here in KC!
TW
---------------------
TW,

First of all I am glad you are enjoying this blog. It is just awesome to have this interaction with die hard weather nuts.

Secondly, I put very little emphasis on the Pacific ocean water temperatures. Something much bigger is going on.

I hope we have a white Thanksgiving and Cchristmas. I hope we see ALOT of snow this year.
----------------------
Justin,

And a white Valentines Day, Presidents Day, Independence Day.....well, maybe not on July 4th.

AHHHH!!! Gary the suspense is killing me! :-) I would just like a white Christmas. Nothing major so that people can't travel but a light snow on Christmas Eve would be great!

Jeanie

Jeanie,

Yeah, traveling through a winter mess is no fun at all.

None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada. All it does it turn my 45 minute morning and hour evening commutes into pure nightmares.

Sue,

I am just as scared as you are on a commute through snow or ice. But, I STILL LOVE IT as it is too pretty!

Gary

Gary,

We need to have atleast 1 monster storm 14 - 20" snow total!! It has been sooooo long since we had a blowout storm. I would take though 20 - 30 inch range for the season, but man would it be cool to just shut down the city with a monster.
--------------------
Bruce,

Almost every year there is a 14 inch or larger snowstorm somewhere within 150 miles of here. So, maybe it is our turn?

Gary

Personly I could go for 6 feet of snow.

I would like to see at least a couple of feet of snow!! The past few years, except for the "freak" storms, have been a disappointment. My three year old received a sled for Christmas last year and has been sitting in the closet since. Please tell me he will be using it this year!!
---------------
Kimberly,

Even with last years bad pattern we did get that one big snowstorm, and just missed another. So, there is hope as I think this pattern is better.

i want enough snow to assure me a snow-day or 2 from work! :)

Two feet? That would be excellent. Snow is awesome! :)

I detest snow and ice, so hopefully it will be under 10" for the December through early March season. A few of the usual 1-3 inch climatological events that are typical for the KC area.

Tons and tons of snow. Enuf to SHUT DOWN the city, st least... one whole day.
And NOT a Saturday snow...an WEEK DAY snow...so we go in the record books as a BLIZZARD IN KC headline.
now, that would be cool.

I would take as much snow as possible. This is probably my last year here in K.C and I would love to have a WHITE CHRISTMAS for the first time in several years. Please Gary, make it snow! Thanks

Brandon,

I wish I had control over it! But I don't.

How about NONE! I lived in Salt Lake for 6 years. Having 5 or 6 feet in the valley was not uncommon, nor was it a major pain.Only once was the airport shut down and that was the first time in 20 years. The point is, they deal with it very very well there. KC is no Salt Lake.
