My First Weather Blog!
My long anticipated first blog is here! I have been in Kansas City for nearly a month and so far the city and people have been great. I moved here from Madison, WI where I had been working for the past 5 years as a Meteorologist for a broadcast television station and also forecasting for a private weather company. So when the opportunity presented itself to take a job in Kansas City working with a respected Meteorologist like Gary Lezak, I couldn't turn down the chance.
I am looking forward to the middle of December...that is when my wife and daughter will be moving to Kansas City for good. Hopefully once the New Year begins we will be settled and have a chance to explore more of Kansas and Missouri.
Before we discuss the weather here is a little more background information on me. I am originally from a small town in southwest Minnesota. So I am very use to harsh winters and hot summers. One of my most vivid weather memories from growing up in Minnesota is experiencing the Halloween Blizzard of 1991. It was quite a sight to see 3-5" of snow on the ground by the afternoon of October 31, and it was still snowing hard. Two days later the snow ended and many snow records were set throughout the state. There was around 20" of snow in my hometown! After finishing high school I attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison, WI and graduated with a degree in Meteorology.
My first on-air job was in Marquette, MI. If you aren't familiar with Marquette, it is in the Lake Superior Snow Belt. My first and only winter in Marquette saw a record breaking 272" of snow. Yes I said 272"! The last pile of snow melted on May 30! So after one winter it was time to start heading south.
After Marquette I worked in Madison, WI for 5 years as a Meteorologist. Now I am delighted to be in Kansas City and am already looking forward to severe weather season. Even though the weather has been a bit 'boring' to this point, it has been nice to ease into things to get a grasp on the community and surrounding areas during a calm stretch of weather. But changes are ahead!
Hopefully everyone is enjoying the mild weather this Thanksgiving weekend because a cold front will be headed our way by the middle of the upcoming week. Gary has been alluding to this for several days now. It looks like the front will swing through sometime on Wednesday. The models continue to slow the front just a bit each day, but right now Wednesday morning looks like the arrival of much colder air. Behind the front nighttime lows will approach zero in parts of the northern Plains, and in Kansas City we will see lows in the teens by later next week. Daytime highs will only be in the 30s on Thursday and Friday...and maybe even into next Saturday!
As for snow? Right now it still looks like the moisture pulls away just as the colder air is moving in, so maybe a small chance of some flurries or snow showers on Wednesday. It is still early, but RIGHT NOW this storm would not bring Kansas City much snow. The good news for snow lovers is that the pattern does appear to be shifting and may become more active behind the storm. No big storms are in sight, but the more active pattern should push a couple of storms across the southern Midwest and South during the first half of December. So in other words...just continue to be patient.
Enjoy the last day of the holiday weekend and make sure to write me with any questions or comments at anytime. Now that my blog account is set up I will try to blog at least once every weekend!

Good blog, Mr. Nelson! Welcome to Kansas City once again, and we will enjoy your insight and knowledge in the years to come! See if you can't do something about keeping that cold air N of 43 degrees. I'd like to see the snowflake contest end in May with no winners!
.............................
TW,
Thanks for the kind words. After living in the 'northland' all my life I will enjoy the Kansas City winters. I'm not a huge fan of snow and cold...maybe because I had to live with that for almost 30 years now! Thanks for checking in!

WELCOME TO KANSAS CITY. Congrats on the first blog. We are all very happy to have you here, you make a great addition to the weather team.
I am exited about the changes ahead. Colder weather makes it feel more like the holidays.

Shannon,
Thank you for stopping by to chat! I agree that it doesn't really seem like the holidays without a little snow and cold. We should get some of both this upcoming week. Probably more cold than snow...but it will be a start.

Jeremy:
Welcome to Kansas City. As a transplantee I have found the people to be very hospitable and friendly, and I'm sure you will find the same.
With regards to the weather...whatever pull you have with the Snow Gods from Wisconsin, please call in a couple markers for us. I know that many of us have been anxiously waiting for a good snow winter for years.
Welcome to Kansas City!!
Jennifer
.......................
Jennifer,
I am excited to be in Kansas City! I think I arrived at a great time of year...I already saw the Plaza lighting and the Chiefs are starting to win again! I'm not on good terms with the 'Snow Gods'...but I'll see what I can do for you:)
Thanks for stopping by!

Welcome to KC! Happy to have you hear and I know you and your family will love it here. if you don't like the weather here, wait an hour or a day and it will change!
Debbie
..................
Debbie,
Thanks for taking the time to write! I think the wait an hour or day saying was common in WI & MN too. That's what makes forecasting the weather great...it always changes(even if it doesn't seem like it right now)!

Good start Jeremy...I know even in Minnesota, things change quickly..but not sure if it is as quick as here. Hang on...you are in for a fun, but somethings frustrating time here in KC.
I will be interested to see your take on the GRC....
..................
Scott,
Thanks for stopping by! I'm looking forward to severe weather season...but am happy to be starting at a 'calmer' time of year. The weather has been a little frustrating already. Even on a 'boring' day I like to get things as close to perfect as possible. With that said, I have not been as close as I would have liked on the high temp a few times...I always try to get within 2, but find being off by 3 very acceptable too.

Tom,
Thanks for the well wishes. Moving is never fun...but moving to a place where everyone is eager to help me learn and grow makes things easy! I will try to blog at least once every weekend to keep everyone up to date with my thoughts on the weather.

Welcome to Kansas City. Hopefully you bring us some better snow luck though your first month was abysmal (with regards to you producing snow fall) though I will tack that up to you trying to get settled in.
This week I expect 5-7 inches of snow fall. Do what must be done to make it happen. :-)
........................
Shawn,
I can tell you love snow! I'm quickly learning that snow has been a precious commodity around here over the past 5 years. While I can't promise 5-7" of snow this week...I think you will be happy to find out that a few computer models are trying to build a 'bigger' storm for the area by mid-week. This may bring us some snow...but we will continue to update this early this week. Thanks for checking out the blog!

You're part of a great weather team! Welcome to KC. My wife and I hail from Sherburn, so we know you were brought up with solid midwestern values (and a love for snow)! Good luck with your new job on Gary's team.
.........................
Joe,
Great to hear from someone that is from MN! When I was in the 6th grade I participated in a free throw contest in Sherburn...the gym was just off the interstate by a few blocks. I won the tournament but lost at the regional tourney. I can't believe I remember something like that!
Thanks for stopping by and I hope to hear from you again!

Congradulations on your first blog!
WOW, I couldn't even amagine what 272 inches of snow would be like AWSOME!! Maby atleast some of that snow from the north will follow you down here:)
Good Luck to you and your family and thanks for telling us some about your experiences!
Thanks for your time.
Nick in St. Joe!
........................
Nick,
Thanks for writing! The winter I spent in Marquette was incredible. Lake effect snow is like no other snow you've ever seen. The snow bands are so isolated and produce some the greatest hourly snow rates I've ever seen. One thing I will never forget will be driving down highway 41 for work and not being able to see the other 2 lanes of the highway...because the snow in the medium was piled over 6 feet high! I won't wish that amount of snow on anyone...but we should see a little snow this week!

Nice weather blog! Welcome to KC! In my younger days, I would have loved to have seen 20" of snow on the ground here. Now....well lets just say I'm hoping for a very dry winter. Once again, welcome!
......................
Deb,
Thanks for the welcome and stopping by. While I love storms...I would probably side with you and enjoy less snow than our 100 year average which is around 20". But I know that the area has been snow starved the past several years and the drought conditions are getting worse...so any form of precip. would be welcomed!

We seem to be on similar paths. I grew up in Minnesota (just outside Minneapolis and I went to school I Wisconsin near Marquette (Concordia University) and then graduated and moved down here a year ago. I remember going out to Trick or Treat in '91 then the snow just kept coming. I recently read that the same front that came though Minnesota that Halloween was was one of the three systems that was part of the 'Perfect Storm' in New England. Welcome to KC!
.................
The Halloween Storm will never leave my mind! That was a storm for the ages! It ranks as the #1 weather event of the last century in Minnesota. That winter started very early. Not only was there a storm on Halloween, but there was another large snow producing storm just after Thanksgiving. Outside of my year in Marquette, I've never seen a winter like that!
Thanks for writing!

Welcome to KC. What are your thoughts on the storms coming this week? Will we get much precip? I know I hope the snow has followed you. Perhaps you will be our good luck snow charm.
.......................
Ann,
I'm not sure if the snow will follow me or not. The past 5 years when I was in WI there was below average snow every year. At least the weather pattern for the upcoming week looks much more active than the past several. Rain showers will be possible on and off the first two days this week, then maybe some rain and snow on Wednesday. Some of the newer computer models are hinting at a better chance of another wave of low pressure moving through on Wed. night and Thurs. This is the one that could bring snow(more than flurries). But it is very early, so make sure to check back during the news and on the blog!
Thanks for stopping by!

Jeremy,
Welcome to KC. I'm a New Englander so I miss real winter. I remember being there when we got hit by the Perfect Storm in 1991. My daughter was five at the time and none of the kids were able to go trick-or-treating because of the storm. They all went to organized parties.
Don't epect much in terms of winter here. And when it does snow, watch out. It comes down as snow. But the highway departments around here use all salt and no sand so they end up melting the snow which refreezes as ice whenever it snows.
..................
Matt,
The 1991 storm was amazing! Such a large part of the country was affected! The plows didn't do a great job when I lived in Madison...especially by the University. Black ice is a big problem in northern areas. Almost impossible to see...but if you go over it hang on!

Glad to have you here Jeremy!! Hey, have you looked at the latest GFS (18 UTC)? Where did the precipitation come from at 96-102 hours? Looks like a snow storm for us!! I know it is the first time the GFS has put that much precip here at that time but hopefully it will trend that way on future runs and verify. I know I am wishcasting but who cares. Anyway, I hope you settle in quickly and your family has a safe move as well.
Mike P
.....................
Mike,
The 18Z GFS is compelling! Not only has the GFS started to latch onto a 'storm' for Wed Night/Thurs, so has the Euro and another model. It is still very early and we need to see if the next several runs keep the feature in...or if this was just a bad run. Gary will be blogging about this very thing beginning on Monday and keeping everyone updated in advance of the upcoming storm(whether it is rain or snow). Cross your fingers if you want snow...this may be our only chance for a little while. I will also have time to check out the 00Z runs before the '10pm' show on Sunday...since football will push back the start of the show. So make sure to tune in!
Thanks for stopping by!

Gary,
How is that storm looking to you? I looked at the new data and it suggest more precip. What do you think?
Andy
...................
Andy,
Gary will post his thoughts early Monday morning about the possible rain to snow event on Wednesday-Thursday. The GFS has now had this in 2 consecutive model runs...along with a couple of other computer models. Is this set in stone...no...but it does look promising. At the very least will see some decent rains from this storm and much colder temperatures on the backside of the storm.

Gary, (assuming this gets pick up tomorrow morning:)
This is starting to get interesting, right now at a little after 11 at night it is over 60 degrees here in St. Joe, but it is 38 degrees in Falls City, Neb. and looking at the radar from manhattan,KS it looks like I can see the front and it is still moving south! Also, eventhough it wont get here there are freezing rain advisories not that far north of Falls City, NEAT.
Nick in St. Joe!
................
Nick,
Gary will post some thoughts in the morning. But the front moving south does concern us. It may make it through St. Joe and maybe even to KCI. But tomorrow it should left back north again. The temperature contrast ahead and behind the front is crazy! 60s in K.C. and only 10 degrees in Rapid City. Concordia, KS had a temp in the 20s at 11pm while it was still 61 at KCI! Big changes are headed our way and it does look very interesting this week. It looks like the pattern will finally shift...but lets hold our excitement in until a few more computer model runs come in. Gary will post his thoughts early Monday morning.

Jeremy, welcome to KC. I have enjoyed watching you on the weekends. I am very impressed with how much you know about our area already. There are some folks who have been on the air in KC for a long time(not at KSHB) who still don't know how to pronounce some of the town and county names. You are doing a great job. We shall look forward to a long stay for you here, and I hope your family arrives safely.
...................
Penny,
Thanks for the email. I've been trying to brush up on my county and city names to make sure that I pronounce them correctly. Since you watch on the weekends you already know that we have been talking about this storm since last weekend! It looks good for a significant snow event around K.C. Make sure to watch Gary for the latest at 10pm tonight...the new model data is in!

Great to hear from you! Looks like the snow will miss Madison, WI...but Milwaukee may see 10-12". Alright, now back to the KC weather scene.

Gary,
So what was the end result of the snowflake contest? How many entries picked November 30th? I chose November 30th and wouldn't mind knowing how many entries were closer than me. Thanks.
----------------------
Joseph,
We are still sorting all of the entries. We have over 4,000 entries and we have to make sure we have all of the November 30th entries separated. I will know a lot more by late Monday.
