The comma head is forming, Snowflake contest ends!

Good afternoon,

I know I took you on an emotional ride today. I am sorry for that, but in the end IT IS HAPPENING. Almost as predicted!

The comma head is now forming over Oklahoma and Kansas. The northern edge will very likely line up north and west of Kansas City. This will place us in some very heavy snow by the evening rush hour. So, everything is back on track. I should have been more patient. Two hours of sleep will do that for you.

The snowflake contest will be coming to an end soon. Will some areas get a foot or more? Maybe so!

Please send in your snowfall totals around 9:30 PM so I can show them on the 10 PM newscast.

Jeff Penner and I measured our first inch of snow at 2:51 PM. The Snowflake Contest is over. We have 4,000 entries to go through to find the winner.

Gary,

You are doing a great job, but I am now perfectly confused about the amount of snow you are predicting. Specifically, what are we looking at for Lenexa and Shawnee?

BOOMER SOONER!!

Tony
---------------
Tony,

Since you are on the edge of this storm it is difficult to say. If this snow continues at this rate for 12 hours we will have 12 inches. So, let's see if it continues.

Gary,

What kind of commute can I expect? Seems like it is coming down pretty hard right now near the Sprint Campus.

.............

Steve,

I just drove from downtown to just south of KCI. A couple of slippery spots from yesterdays mix...but other than that not too bad. Another band of snow is in the city right now though. I'm now north of the heaviest snow...only light snow and flurries near KCI. I'm guessing the worst of the weather will remain from the downtown area to the SE...much like the forecast calls for.

Over here we had a flew flakes but nothing really. I believe you and the team in what you say for the snowfall amount totals, and that anything could happen. In Lenexa near 435 & 87th . . . loving the snow. We have anywhere from 3.5 to 4.8 of whites stuff on the deck rails, grill cover, and patio table. We're calling the average about 3.8 total. My son claims this doesn't include the ice from yesterday but I think it is probably total.

Keep it up! Jennifer

Hey Jeremy and Gary!
I'm up here at the International Airport and we seem to be dodging the flakes altogether as of 415pm! It's very interesting having such a definative snow line within the city limits! I see Wheeler is getting hammered with snow. The Snowflake Contest is still on here at KCI!

I am currently about 4 miles south of KCI and no snow here either. It is becoming evident that the cutoff for snow may be just north of downtown K.C., which has already received 3"! As usual, still no snow in the northland between Weatherby Lake and KCI. The cutoff point where I drove out of the heavist snow was north of 635 and 9 highway. There was only a dusting of snow to I-29 and 64th street. North of I-29 and 72nd street there was nothing. Things are very depressing here. Jeremy,

You said, "Gary nailed this storm to within 20-50 miles."

Do you realize that the Kansas city is over 50 miles from corner to corner? So what your saying is that Gary could have forecast incorrect amounts across the entire city, by your 20-50 mile theory. A 3 million person forecast error is a pretty good one, if you ask me. Hopefully that doesnt happen when spring comes and bad storms arrive.

Besides, I lost alot of confidence in Gary when I saw 3 different forecasts in 18 hours. He needs to go with one thing and stay with it, instead of trying to go for bust or copying the models. Even though I like the snow, its dissapointing.

But I think I am doing better. I am sure I have upset many people when I drive home. My husband has always told me to drive the speed limit I feel safe at. Can you tell me what that might be? I have been here since 1993. It does still scare me so much. Can anyone tell me what I can do can about this? And I am sorry if someone was behind me today if I was going to slow. The streets were alittle piled high with snow today. I hope I can get back to work tomorrow, but we will see. Gary, I am sorry about Wendy. she was a pretty dog. Is Lawrence going to see much more snow? I notice on the radar that there seemed to be some heavier snow south and west of Lawrence. Will just slide right by to the South?

Great job today!

Thanks!

Marisa,

You may get one more inch.

GARY I NEVER HEARD A WINTER FORECAST FOR ST. JOSEPH LIKE YOU DID FOR KANSAS CITY. DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEA WHAT ST. JOSEPH CAN EXPECT THIS WINTER.

BOOMER SOONER
----------------------------
Boomer Sooner! Brian,

St. Joseph will have about the same conditions this winter as KC.

Hello Mr. Lezak,
Is there still a chance that the snow will make it north to Leavenworth? Or does it not look very likely?

Posted by: Ben Tracy at November 30, 2006 8:13 PM

New radar pass shows heavy snow in the northland and still developping however none has reached the ground.

Posted by: Charles at November 30, 2006 8:19 PM

When looking at the radar on the site it appears that there is alot of "pink" echoes around the southern part of the city. Are these returns more snow or is that expected to be ice?

Should southern JOCO still expect another couple of inches tonight?

Thanks for all the updated information.

Gary,

Thanks for your online forecasts. I'm here in Jacksonville, FL. I was planning on flying back late this morning but because of your blog and your forecast I decided to wait until Friday morning. I get back to KC tomorrow mid-afternoon. I would have been smack in the middle of driving home in this stuff to Grandview. Thanks again, you saved me alot of travel hassles.

Hello Gary and Team, Oh wait a minute let me wipe my kids tears away because their is no snow not even a flake and they have school Friday, ok im back. DeKalb, Mo. 0.00000000000000000 in.

I know its not you fault though. I see you have a 20% chance next week, is this a storm maybe?

Liberty has only seen a dusting of snow. Just wanted to send in an update!

Posted by: Carla at November 30, 2006 8:41 PM

I must be the only person unhappy about snow. A student organization at the school I graduated from had its one major fundraising event of the year this weekend, and anything more than, oh... three inches for most of the metro means thousands of dollars in losses thanks to poor attendance.

I've kinda had to bite my tongue while watching other people express jubilation at the flakes... even though this devastating amount of snow was coming in behind them. I like a little bit of snow... but a foot of the stuff? YIKES!

To all the folks missing it in Saint Joseph and Lawrence: I'd love to share, and in fact... I wish I could. It would make my life easier.

Please tell me we'll get something in Liberty... I dont know how else I'm getting up the hill right in front of my house in the morning... Need at least a little snow to help with the traction... Cant you just push it a little farther north?? :)

Justin,

Liberty will only get a dusting. It is so sad.

Hello,
Once again, is there a chance that the Low Pressure System could still move Northward, bring areas like Wyandotte and Platte County and the whole city area a good amount of snow. I mean this storm has been very active and has done a lot of weird things. So really all I'm saying is could the Low Pressure suddenly move North and bring us snow tonight into early next morning?
Thanks.

8 1/2 in in spring hill at 9pm. It is still snowing pretty heavy here. I wonder how much more we can expect?

Good job Gary and crew. Maybe now others in the KC area, including some relatives, will believe you are the most accurate in the city. I too, like other bloggers would switch channels just to see what the others were saying and they always catch up to you!
I was completely prepared because I listened to you earlier in the week!

Lori

Thanks! This was a very difficult storm to predict.

Have a great weekend.

I just took measurements on the deck and in the yard... 4 1/2 inches. I also heard sleet or ice pellets hitting my coat.

Gary,
Is it me, or is the low shifting more to the north now? KC might be seeing the def. zone more than central MO

9PM and 5.5 inches of snow on our patio in Olathe (close to Garmin). Great job Gary and crew! You're the only ones that know what you're talking about!

Hi Gary,
I live in Iola, KS and I watch your weather report every night because your forcast is so accurate. Since we live basically inbetween all the bigger cities, I get channels from KC, Wichita, and Joplin but since your my favorite I tune into KSHB to watch your weather. Would you please let me know how much snow Iola has gotten because I haven't heard anything about amounts and as a weather junkie.....it's driving me NUTS! Also, I was wondering about the tracking and intensity of the storm because on one of the radars I was looking at, it looked to me like it was falling apart. But I could also be wrong, like so many times before! And one more question, how much should we expect overnight? Thank you so much for everything you do......and don't forget us people that live south of the city cause we tune in to watch your forcasts too!

Grain Valley 4.5", but that includes the strange switching back and forth between snow and sleet.

5.5" at Raintree Lake in southern Lee's Summit

Hello!!! From Lake of the Ozarks, we are experiencing heavy downpours of sleet mixed with some snow. We have 3-4 inches of ice, sleet, and some snow on the ground. I hope it continues all night long.

5" on the porch here in Independence and still falling.

Posted by: David G at November 30, 2006 9:33 PM

Gary, It is 10:55 P.M. here at the Lake of the Ozarks and we are getting serious lightning and thunder snow. I have never seen lightning so bright. The sleet turned over to snow about 15 minutes before the light show and now the snow is pouring down faster than I have ever seen. Keep up the good work. I would say we are up to 5-6 inches now.

Gary, LATEST UPDATE FROM LAKE OF THE OZARKS!! We are digging out of about 14-16 inches of fresh snow that fell between my last post and now. We have had some roofs collapsed and many boat docks have been reported collapsing. This is a serious condition here at the Lake of the Ozarks. This snow rivals the 24 inches we had in 1994. We will be busy at the firehouse today.

Jeff,

Wow! Thanks for the update.

... really truly, should the snowflake contest be over if KCI recorded no snow and they are the official weather station for KC? What if the Fox4 station had been near KCI?
--------------------
Beth,

You didn't mean Fox4 right? You know we are NBC Action News? A lot of people mix us up I think.

Anyway, our official recording station for the Snowflake Contest is here at our studios, the NBC ACTION NEWS studios.

Jeff Penner and I measured the first one inch at 2:51 PM here at the station.
