What a strange day

Good evening,

Well, the storm ended up taking a track just a bit too far south. We are talking about 50 to 60 miles. This took that snow/no snow line right into the city. There are many locations north and west of downtown that are still waiting for their first snowflake.

Here are some snow totals:

Olathe: 10"
Overland Park: 7"
Waldo: 6"
Lee's Summit: 6"
Grandview: 5"Country Club Plaza: 5"

And, then you go just a few miles north and west......NOTHING! What a strange day. There is often a well defined line where the snow cuts off, but it is rarely right over Kansas City. I have felt the frustration of many of you up north and west. We will have other chances this season.

The snow will end after midnight down south and we may add another 2 inches to these totals. A couple of spots may still get close to a foot of snow by the time the storm is over.

I will blog about the crazy week on Friday.

Ok--Now I'm mad but NOT at you guys. So here by Piper it DIDN'T snow at all! All we saw were a few snowflakes for about 3min and that was it. And down south well-- to me they were the lucky ones! At least a foot of snow! I could've settled for 4" if I had a choice. And on your 7-day I saw a small chance for some more snow on Wendesday. Could it be like this storm that we had today? And could the people here up north have the type of snow the people down south had? When will we see a another system like this again.I know it's still quite aways away, but still. So since we had no snow, but we still could see 2" here according to you and the team. I'm looking foward to it and hope that we could see snow on Wendesday.

Alden,

It doesn't look like a good chance next Wednesday. Hopefully that will change.

Is there any chance for snow in Parkville the rest of the night? We had a few flakes this afternoon, that's it. . .

Posted by: Julie at November 30, 2006 9:33 PM

Gary and weather Team:

I have to give you a golden star for your efforts today. I was looking at your blogs from this morning on. This morning - Gary you were nervous, yet what you suggested that the storm may go a little further south - was right on. You suggested how much snow may fall 5-10 inches to as much as 15 inches.

For the south part of the metro, you hit the nail on the head. I am not sure how much more accurate it could be.

You did say last night if the storm moves further south, the heavy snow would move further south.

Now, the only thing that I get a kick out of is that when there are these kinds of storms - every station in the city tries to have the best covearge in some shape or form. I guess that is not a BAD thing, but sometimes - on some stations -it appeasr like they are reaching for stuff that is not there. However, KSHB did a good job overall.

So - the next question - is this part of your theory? THis storm is almost a carbon copy of the one that hit last December. So far your winter forecast is right on - you forecast at least one Ice Storm, and a couple of major winter storms. Now, the entire metro area did not see both - but it was close.

Great job - from a true weather lover - and yes being from Michigan - I am used to snow. Seven inches? That is nothing compared to what Michigan gets (esp near the Great Lakes.)

Have a great evening!

We are at 7.25 inches at 99th and Stateline. Great forcasting today...you were closer from the beginning.

Posted by: Emily at November 30, 2006 9:38 PM

Ok, Gary, I'm not sure which one of us is more sad that the track ended up the way it did.... I've been running around the house tonight yelling about how much they got in Olathe, that my Mrs is telling me maybe I should move there.... Is there a "snowball's" chance that we will ever get a good one here? Thanks for all your hard work... you are still the best one in town! JB

Posted by: Jim B at November 30, 2006 9:41 PM

Well I just measured on the deck and were at 6" in Warrensburg and snowing HARD!

Posted by: Jeff at November 30, 2006 9:45 PM

Do you anticipate the Waldo area getting much more accumulation? It's still coming down nicely outside.

Posted by: Mary at November 30, 2006 9:47 PM

O.K., I feel better now I have let this one go totally and I have come to realize what a massive storm this really is, from a blizzard in OK, to a crippling ice storm in the St. Louis area, (50,000 w/o power last I heard)and they are expecting a high wind event from this in the northeast!
Thankfully the snowflake contest wasn't taken at KCI or this would have been a very akward situation.

Gary,

We've had a steady moderate snowfall all evening that just intensified into heavy, blowing snow within the last 10 minutes. Total accumulation so far is 6".

Thanks for all you!

Gary,
First of all I would like to thank you for your enthusiasm in giving the winter forecast. With that being said, I have a question. I live in Lawrence and we haven't got a flake of snow and I am wondering how it is that Topeka, Emporia, Eudora and pretty well every city in every direction around me got substantial snow and we received none of the wonderful white stuff!! I am completely dunbfounded on how this could happen. I could understand if it were just the areas to the east, but it is cities in all directions. Thank you for your help and once again for your love of snow!!

I Can't believe I missed it again..

Man---- Again, I traveled out of town and missed the first big storm of the year. I lived this first snow storm excitement via KSHB online, Gary's Blog(first time blog user/reader/poster), oh and camera's on the scoutcam.net

It was over 70F here in Pinehurst,NC today. The only white here are golf balls and hair. HA-HA

The last big storm I missed too. Got caught in the ice portion of it while in Dallas TX.

Gary thank you for the updates and information. It's what set's you and your weather team apart. The others are just bad karma and naysayer's. I enjoy your enthusiasm and a great snow storm too.

Keep snowing in Blue Springs and just a little at KCI!!

Gotta get home tomorrow and have some fun with my wife and kids.

Let it Snow Let it Snow Let it Snow…
Now Gary go get on the air and get us some more snow. See ya on Friday.

Gary,
I live in Peculiar and was wondering how do I find out officially how much snow has fallen? It is still snowing down here. I will put it to you like this we are sitting on our couch and we can hear the snow/snow pellets hitting the window. Can you please let me know exactly how to find out how much snow that has accumulated down here? Thanks.

Well, it was a lovely little snowstorm here in Overland Park. And the "iffyness" of it all was quite exciting. Sure beats having no snow at all! And it was a terrific background for putting up Christmas decorations.

Posted by: Sunnye at November 30, 2006 10:14 PM

How much longer will it snow? It seems the storm isn't moving fast and we seem to be getting the wrap around snow now. I live in Blue Springs/Grain Valley.

Posted by: Brian at November 30, 2006 10:29 PM

I wouldn't call the Lee's Summit number a total. It's 10:35 and snowing like crazy still. They're good sized flakes and lots of them being blown around. It'll be interesting to see what the final total is.

Posted by: Jim S at November 30, 2006 10:36 PM

Its 10:30 in Raymore and the snow is coming down very strong here. I measured about an hour ago and it was at 6 inches I am sure we have added some more in this part of the storm

Posted by: Courtney at November 30, 2006 10:39 PM

Gary and Team,
You all did a great job on your forcasting. I blogged you this morning when everyones confidense went down. I told you all don't jump ship it looks like it is still coming this way. I am a snow lover like you Gary. Boy am i dissapointed. See i live at 68th and leavenworth rd. here is KcK. I only recieved a wopping 1/4 of an inch. WOW talk about being missed. I am 42 and i do not ever remember seeing the city split with this much differnce. Well the next time better be our turn here.
You guys take care and get some rest. I have no excuse not to go to work tomorrow now. You know with no snow on the ground.

Gary,

Sounds like you have had a busy couple of days. We live in St. Louis now, but you were always our favorite forecaster in KC. This blog is really a nice feature that you provide, and I appreciated the fact that you apologize for all of the "flip-flopping" in the forecasts (we are getting that here, too!). Obviously the weather is tough to predict, and being a meteorologist isn't always as easy as it looks. Hope you got some sleep!

Happy Holidays!
Amanda
PS- We are still waiting on that snow!

Posted by: Amanda at November 30, 2006 10:54 PM

Gary and the Weather Team,

Got alittle nervous that we weren't going to get any snow in Independence when 3:30 rolled around and didn't have any, but it came through. I know some people are upset that they didn't get any snow, but is it neccesary to be so rude about it? It's almost like they think you're in charge of what happens, I mean come on, you're trying to predict the future! Anyway you did a good job and don't let the rude people get to you.

I am in Lee's Summit and have measured the snow on my deck all evening, the latest total is just about 9 and a half inches. We were about 5 inches at 8 this evening. It is snowing moderately still at this time.

Just went and measured: 11 inches and coming down hard. We had 8 inches just one hour and a half ago. Then the thunder snow started and added a very quick 3". Could not see 100 feet outside. WHEW!! Jim Sublette, Clinton,Missouri. By the way, great job today Gary.

Gary:

I have a question about this storm and Lawrence, Kansas. If you don't have time to get to it, no big deal or if possible you could even pm me about it at my e-mail address. I was awake for much of last night trying to figure what happened here. There were so many snow reports around here and while I we were on the very western edge I still thought we would see flakes from the sky esp. since we are on the same lat. as Olathe. Synoptically speaking I figured we were in a tough spot to get the big dump being this far west but I was wondering if there was not something else in play because again, the storm did not take a bad track for Lawrence to see snow. My question is micro climate-I was wondering if you thought it possible that the fact that Lawrence is in two river valleys if dry air did not get too entrenched in this area and just could not be overcome. Furthermore, Lawrence has been drier than other areas around here as we missed much of the t-storm activity this summer and fall. In a storm this synoptically freaky I wonder if maybe micro climate does not play a role some what.

I know you are extremely busy and don't expect you to answer really-and I'm sure not trying to sound like a "sore loser" here (though it may sound like that!!!) I'm just curious and trying to learn more about winter weather events in this area because they are my favorite. Thanks in advance and again great job with this complex storm. By your theory, and I think it is awesome by the way, we should cycle back into another set up by the first of the year or soon there after-looks like by the longer range models we are heading back to a more bland pattern and Canada is having Pacific air dumped into it. Thanks again and if you ever get a chance, I look forward to hearing from you.
----------------------
Bill,

There is no micro climate affect in Lawrence when it comes to this type of situation. Lawrence just happened to be just west of the snow/no snow line. It was a fascinating day. You did get some nice rain earlier in the week with thunderstorms, and you will be hit sometime soon to even it out a bit.

Wow, what a roller coaster, Gary! Good job! I still would have preferred the dusting some got, but in Prairie Village I had about 5.5 inches to clear off the driveway. Another inch fell after that.

Our two Basset Hounds, Abbey and Tucker, however LOVED the stuff. Fun to watch them plow through it - shoulder high on them!!

Have a great day! - Mike

Thanks, Gary my silly son went outside and measured in 4 differnt places with the ruler came up with 11. Short story I know you will appreciate, I have 2 labs that are 9mths old first snow they went outside had a ball snow between eye's and all due to still snowing around 10:30 to 11 went to get camera went back and the male was just laying there in the snow like what I didn't do anything.

Linda,

Where are you located?

Hi, Gary & everybody.

Well, my wife and I are depressed this morning. We love the snow (ice, not so much), and up here just off of Hwy. 169 and NW 63rd Street we got maybe a dusting.

:-(

How much longer before it's OUR turn? (Please say it's not long. We're a couple of big kids and we can't wait to break out our sleds.)

Thanks for the coverage, though! Forecasting stuff like this for KC is a feat in itself, and you guys did great with the data you had.
---------------------
Evan,

It has to be frustrating. I know if I lived up north I would have this empty feeling in my stomach this morning even if I did get all that rain a couple of days earlier. Your turn has to come with this pattern we are in. So, hold onto the thought that a snowstorm will hit you sometime soon. It is only December 1st.
