1 PM update

Good afternoon everyone,

The radar echoes are impressive. Wichita, KS is now under a Heavy Snow Warning. There is evidence that the heavy snow will be in our area for several hours as well overnight. So, I am beginning to think that this storm may maximize and produce higher snowfall amounts. For snow enthusiats this is quite exciting. Can you believe this day? I hope you are all enjoying it. At the same time, I understand that there are many out there that despise this and are hoping for the lower totals. There are concerns as we go into tonight and Sunday. The biggest concern is travel. If you must travel tonight and early Sunday then you will likely have to deal with snow packed roads and long travel times. So, the best thing to do is just relax at home and watch the snow fall outside.

When I get home tonight I will be taking Breezy and Stormy for a long walk in the snow. I am now on my way into NBC Action News. I am doing the weather on the 5 PM and 10 PM newscasts. I will try to update the blog later this afternoon if these trends continue. We will stick with the 3 to 6 inch forecast and as soon as I see and feel it will be more, or less, I will let you know.

We are very excited about the snow let's go for 10 inches yeah yeah yeah!!!!

Hi Gary,

When is the snow supposed to start in Harrisonville? The radar is showing us in the snow but there is not a flake outside. Is it just not making it to the ground?
Will this cut down the snow totals? And How much snow will fall here.
Thanks.

Gary:

Good afternoon sir!!! Well, I finally have something worthy to report: It is snowing in SW Lawrence!!!!! Yahoo!!! Temps. are beginning to fall slowly and we got snow!!!! Looks like some decent bands imbedded with in this so it is go time!!!!

Gary and the KSHB weather team, it is snowing lightly here in Berryton just southeast of Topeka's city limits. The temperature was as high as 34 but now is 32.9. I have some electronic weather equipment that is somewhat accurate. My barometer is now starting to fall. My guess is the storm seems to be strenghtening and we should get our 5 inches at least here. Keep tracking this Gary and I will send snow totals to you this evening and when it is finished snowing. Have a great time walking in the snow and tracking it. Michael/Topeka

Posted by: mike huffman at January 20, 2007 1:50 PM

That is the stuff I like to hear!!

I finally got the rest of the ice off of my driveway..... so bring on the snow. I can deal with that.

I will be happy with 4 inches but I would love to see more!!

So far we have had a little over 8 inches here at my house this season.

Gary was wondering if you still have windy. I just moved back from tulsa and used to watch you then . I remember when you were at fox

Michele,

Windy died in August, she was almost 17 years old. It was extremely sad, but what a great life she had.

Welcome back.

Gary-

Bring on the snow, I've got a pot of soup on and ready to just sit back and watch the flakes fly. Have fun with Stromy and Breezy tonight, our dog Foster LOVES the snow too!

I'll keep you updated from Olathe.

Posted by: Wade at January 20, 2007 2:03 PM

It just started snowing in Olathe at 2pm. Since tht is 4 hours earlier than predicted, does that mean higher snow totals?

David

Posted by: David, Lenexa at January 20, 2007 2:07 PM

It's snowing in northern Linn County at 2pm. Since the snow was supposed to start later (3-5pm window) does this bode well for a higher snow total? Bring it on, we're hunkered down and ready.

Posted by: Debbie at January 20, 2007 2:11 PM

Gary I saw that heavy snow warning also and was wondering what you thought.... however I know there is much more data to look at to see if our totals could go higher.. I will blog my snowfall from the northland bary rd and I 29 thanks for the update Jerry action weather fan

2:12 pm and in western Lenexa it is snowing lightly mixed with (?) rain, earlier then thought??? Have a good forecast and I want summer!!!! But know we have to go through this first. snow is better then ice.

Gary -- I live in western Olathe just south of K-10, and it started snowing here right about 2 pm, and although my outdoor thermometer shows temps above freezing, snow is starting to adhere to my roof and deck.

Dear Gary,
I am not sure if this is the right forum to ask this question, but I am suppose to leave Kansas City on Monday morning to drive to the Dallas area. Do you think I should go? Is there going to be ice in Oklahoma and Texas. I will be going 71 South to I-44 to I- 35 or something like that. Thanks for your time!

Posted by: Andrea EuDaly at January 20, 2007 2:27 PM

2:28pm and it's snowing in Lenexa! Yea!

Posted by: Christi at January 20, 2007 2:28 PM

I am not able to recieve either of your digital channels (broadcast), is this due to the ice or some other problem?

Posted by: Kevin at January 20, 2007 2:33 PM

Gary - We're getting some steady, light snow here in Overland Park.

Posted by: Brian at January 20, 2007 2:35 PM

It looks like the storm will move just south and east, leaving us with maybe 3"--I want more!!! But the radar echoes are sometimes misleading. We'll see what the RUC runs are at 3:30?

I too will take my dog for a walk when we get some snow on the ground. It has been 1 week since I have walked him and he is going crazy. Just too icy to take a chance of breaking bones this past week.

I live in Piper it is 3:15 and snow is falling. It sterted about an hour ago. I think the snow we are getting write now is atleast modderate if not haevy. It started with just a few snowflakes and got heavier. Now, the snow is just falling and falling. Are we going to get a break in between the storm or will it not stop until the storm passes though? Write now for Piper it looks like you should rase the snowfall amounts!

Posted by: Andrew Talkin at January 20, 2007 3:25 PM

Gary just looked at the NWS site and they have taken snow fall totals down. I think they are underestimating this storm greatly.

Posted by: daniel at January 20, 2007 3:25 PM

Snowing like crazy in Harrisonville. The driveway is covered. My son has put out an official wooden board to measure the snow totals with. At 3:25, the board is completely covered, and he is making snowballs with the stuff. He estimates near one inch. Yea!

Hi Gary, OK chalk me up as one who is NOT a snow fan. I'm still scraping ice from last week. Still I have to grudgingly admit this is an interesting storm and accurate forecasts help cope. Hope you enjoy! Walt

Walt,

I am sure you are not alone. I bumped into a few non snowlovers at breakfast this morning. Thank you for appreciating the accurate forecasts.

Gary Here in Kearney we have been getting snow since 3:15. It is AWESOME :)!!! Do you know about how much we will get here? It is coming down pretty fard and fast. I hope it just keeps coming and we get a foot LOL.. I doubt that will happen though. Well keep warm and I know you will be enjoying this just as much as I will.

Heavy Snow warning now out of Topeka for Emporia, Salina, Concordia.

Heavy Snow warning now out of Wichita for Wichita/Hutch area.

Heavy Snow warning out of Des Moines for Southern Iowa.

So....why isn't KC area (right in the middle of these heavy snow warnings....under an advisory with predicted less amounts?)

What gives?

Posted by: Dave at January 20, 2007 4:00 PM

The Heavy snow warnings are moving closer they are now just north of the State border and across the central Kansas including newly added Emporia to the list

Nick in St. Joe with very light snow starting to fall.....

Posted by: Nick Rau at January 20, 2007 4:11 PM

So is the low tracking to the south of KC like you suspected it might do, or is it just pulling up a lot more moisture as it nears?

Posted by: Jon M at January 20, 2007 4:13 PM

3PM...nice work Gary..right on time. Now...looking at the WV...seems the low is still pretty far south, and seems to be hanging in there. Looks ok still. I think we should think about 5-8 inches. Just me...I am loving the echos, the ULL staying together...dunno.

Posted by: Scott at January 20, 2007 4:13 PM

4:15 in St. Joseph, very tiny flakes, just started to snow.

Hi all - Well, the forecast decline to 3-5 inches, but frankly, the NWS (at least in this instance) apparently couldn't order a drunken stupor in a frat party. Perhaps they may luck out and be correct, but note that Topeka at 351 pm went from a Snow Advisory to a Heavy Snow Warning for some of its area - 3 to 7 inches - that is more like it I'd think, looking at radar.

However, I have noticed the NWS often hypes situations that don't come close to Warning status, yet stubbornly stick with Advisories, even when we are receiving 8-10 inches of snow. And incredibly, they never change the forecast. Pleasant Hill has issues, I think, of which forecasting sometimes is one.

Later,
Dog

Good work on forecasting this past weekends snowfall. I live in Greenwood and we had 6 inches of snow.
