4:40 PM update
Heavier snow is increasing south of Kansas City. This will likely move across our region during the next 8 hours. I am sticking up to 6 inches possible, but we will monitor this closely and see how heavy the snowfall rates become during the next few hours.
If you get the chance watch the 5 PM newscast in a few minutes. I am debuting SNOW VISION. It will show how much snow has accumulated. Let me know what you think.

Gary,
We are seeing around 1/2 inch snow fall rates here in Independence. The flakes have gotten much bigger since around 4:40.
I think 6 inches is very possible.?
Are we still thinking snow till sunrise?
We have already seen an inch in Indep!

About 1" has fallen here in Tonganoxie with moderate snow (vis down to about 1 mile) continuing to fall. It is wonderfully wet snowman-making snow.
Posted by: Jake at January 20, 2007 4:44 PM
Woot Snow Vision sounds fun i will be watching. Currently it is one sec let me look out side we are getting light to moderate snow but it looks like it is intensifying.

Gary, I'll already tell you this. I LOVE Snow Vision!! Anything that involes ESP and something new, I like. Oh can you PLEASE use X-VISION? Isnt thats what it's called? Thats my favorite setting. In fact, I think you guys should use it more. So please, can you think about using X-Vision? I think it is so cool to see the storm and its heights. Thanks and keep up the work.

Snow started falling lighty here in St. Joe at about 3:45....it has really picked up within the last hour. Cars and streets are now covered. BRING ON THE SNOW!!!!

once again the snow has increased here in Indep MO.
I would say we have increased to an inch an hour rates. The flakes are nickel size and really coming down. we have surpassed an inch and heading for one and a half inches soon.....

Any concerns about dry slotting? Looks like the WV might be showing this?
-------------------------
Scott,
Oh yes, and I don't like it. The dry slot will arrive by 3 AM. This is why I am not upping my totals. But, if the snow increases in intensity the snow totals may go up anyway.

I love the little snow vision.....hoping we will get lots of snow. Keep the good forecasting up!!!!

So, will this be the snowman-making kind of snow? My daughter's been wanting to make one all winter.

Gary,
Any idea about how much snow Overland Park will see. I am excited to see snow once again.
Thanks.

Gary:
Brief (LOL) update from Lawrence-just ahd the kids out and had a massive snow ball fight-have prob. got close to an inch as my backyard was still sold ice and it accumilated from the get go-awesome time for sure!!!! Finally getting colder so the snow ratios are a bit better and just now beginning to stick to the streets. Oh the dreaded dry slot-what are you gonna do!!!! Hopefully we can get some decent accums. before it hits!!!!! Just have to keep watching the skys but hey, we have snow and it is beautifull outside!!!! Have a great night!!
Bill in Lawrence
--------------------
Bill,
Over one inch already on the Plaza. This storm wouldn't even produce snow in many other situations. It is tracking to our northwest and we should enjoy every snowflake it produces before the dry slot arrives.

Gary I have the constant Viper Radar on constantly and it show a nice band of heavy snow about 140 long just north of Emporia running east and west. But I am seeing a dry slot as you both mentioned. Would there be a chance of wrap around snow once that passes or will it conk the snow out entirely. We only have about an inch in in Berryton at this time. Great to see the snow. Nice precip! Snow Vision was great it was right on the spot for AC we currently have about 1 and a half inches. Hopefully we can get alot more.

ABout 1.5 inches of snow in Liberty at 5:40. How much more do you think we will get? Any chances of school closings monday?

Snowy,
You have a head start over a few other locations. Keep us updated as you approach 6 inches.

What part of the area will the dry slot impact? I live in Western Cass County near Louisburg.

Paul,
It will impact everyone, but not until it is a winter wonderland outside.

Gary:
I promise, I will try not to bother you again!!! LOL
For sure, one can see the dry slot on the WV loop-but it looks like from the RUC and Radar we will have some decent snow before it works it's way in here-if we get 4-5 inches (yea I wanted 6 in a bad way!!!) one really can't complain-I mean 4-5 is a very decent event for here first off and second, in the end we are lucky we get this considering the track of this thing!! Oh well, still time to pull a rabbit out of the hat but again, we have already pulled some good tricks out!!! It is finally below 31 here so what heavier bands come through should give us better ratios over all-sitting close to an inch and counting!!!!
Have a great night sir!!!
Bill, dreaming of the sleds in Lawrence
-------------------
Bill,
One of the heavier bands is moving in. I am at work, but did get the chance and I took a nice walk across the street in the park. It is sticking to everything, a winter wonderland.

Snow vision is cool and that's "snow" joke;)
The snow has been coming down steadily and every thing is coated again!

Gary I wish we could get you live again here in Topeka. However one of the stations here and a meteorologist who admires your theory used ESP Snowvision here in Topeka. It was cool!! So I can say cool to you too since you are using it but I can't tune you in. We may have two inches now here in Berryton, temp is 30.4 but I hear melting outside and I saw dripping water. However it is snowing heavier now at 6:45 p.m. We shall see what the storm totals are in the a.m. Keep up your great work! Michael/Topeka

Gary,
Hello from Iola, KS! I just wanted to report that we already have 4 inches of SNOW and it's still coming down pretty good! Is it supposed to do this all night at this rate? If it keeps it up, we may have a foot by morning! I didn't get to see the "snow vision" but it sounds really cool! Are you going to have it on the 10pm broadcast?
Tabitha
Posted by: Tabitha at January 20, 2007 7:24 PM
Up here in Liberty we have just under 2.5inches. I looked at the radar about 2 hrs ago and it looked like it was breaking up to the sw, BUT i just looked at it again and it appers that the coverage is picking up abit to the sw. HOPE IT SNOWS ALL NIGHT!

Gary: How does a hole develop right in the middle of the snow area? And furthermore, how does that same hole end up moving right over Kansas City?
Are we just cursed?

Heavy snow here in Overland Park at 151st & Metcalf. Time is 7:45.
Probably pushing between 1" and 2" now.
Nice link here:

Just went out and measured 2 1/2 inches four miles SW of Kingsville with moderate snowfall.
Posted by: Kimberley at January 20, 2007 7:52 PM
WOW, it is really coming down out there, I have measured about 1 and a half inches of snow on the back porch, then I messed around in the snow a bit with my brother, it is sticking to the trees to! I think that this is the "perfect" type of snow, cold enough to stick, but warm enough not to drive you inside in five minutes!!!
Thanks for your time

It has stopped snowing here in Eudora. The radar looks like it is going to start again soon, but I am losing hope that we will see even four inches. We have only seen about an inch and a half here.

Libby,
It is a struggle isn't it, but it is snowing. I think you will end up between 3 and 4 inches. Not bad.

we have a solid three inches in leavenworth, still coming down at a good rate. what are the chances of snow moving in after the dry slot passes?
Posted by: murphy at January 20, 2007 8:21 PM
Three inches in Cleveland, MO
Posted by: Paul at January 20, 2007 8:25 PM
Just measured 3.0" here in Blue Springs and the snow is picking up in intensity. How long is it expected to continue snowing around the KC area? Has the storm just picked up in speed? Is it weakening? I was out of town and just got back. Looking at radar it looks like just south and east they are seeing rates at 1" + per hour. Crazy science teacher.

We have almost 3" right outside our door (on the north side of the house) in Blue Springs. Not snowing right now. Will we get more? And can you believe there are Boy Scouts camping in this -- including my husband and son? At least it isn't bitterly cold. My sister's in McPherson KS -- what kind of totals are they seeing tonight?
