8:00 am Update
The last significant snowfall with this storm is coming to an end this morning over the Kansas City metro area and will be ending around 10:00 if you live up toward Chillicothe or Richmond or Carollton. There may be a few flurries or some light freezing drizzle as the day goes on. What a Storm! The snowfall totals that we've been getting are verifying our forecast of 3 to 6 inches. When I was looking at the data Friday it looked as if a lot of us would get 4 to 5 inches without much deviation across the area.
Here are some of the totals:
Rich Hill, MO 6"
Blue Springs, MO 4.75"
Independence, MO 4"
Lawrence, KS 4"
Bonner Springs, KS 3"
Lee's Summit, MO 4.5"
Leavenworth, KS 3.5"
Eudora, KS 2.5"
Send us your totals,
Enjoy the snow,
Brett

I measured 4.5" total DEPTH here in Tonganoxie this AM (likely more than that fell and compressed a bit...but fresh, hourly readings were not taken to get a true storm total snowfall).

Just measured snow in my backyard up in St. Joseph. It came to about 7 inches. If you want to get technical, I pulled the good ol' tape measurer out with fractions and it came to 6 7/8. It is about time we saw some snow. Just wish it was today instead of yesterdays. Teachers like to have snow days too.

We got 6.25 inches of snow in Clinton,Mo. Some spots in my yard had 6.30 inches but I will say a safe average of 6.25 inches. Across the entire viewing area it is a winter wonderland.

I know you say 4.75" in Blue Springs, but we got a solid 7" in our backyard just off I-70 & Woods Chapel Rd. Wow! And my son and husband were camping out in this stuff with the Boy Scouts (Troop 332) at Landahl Park off 7 Hwy & Argo Rd. on the north side of Blue Springs!! But they survived, luckily.

Brett, Gary and Jeff, here in Berryton we have 4 inches. however in and around the Topeka vicinity it is only measuring 2-3 according to some sources. It is above freezing and the snow is beginning a slow melting process. Look s like a slight warmup for the next 8-10 days. Take care, Michael/Topeka

Brett,
Was there much of a snow total difference from the Plaza area to let's say, Shawnee? It looks like we got about 6-7 inches around the Plaza, but Shawnee got only about 3 inches.
**********
Allie,
It does look like there were some differences over just a few miles. A couple heavier bands rotated right the Plaza and downtown.

Now that a significant part of your viewing area has now (finally!) had their first significant snowfall of the season, I'd love to see how the 01/21/07 00Z (Saturday evening)500mb chart (since that seems to be the level you feel coincides the best from cycle to cycle) lines up with the charts from the days previous that you believe fit the pattern theory you've been discussing online and on air. 42 days ago was around December 10th ... Even plus or minus a couple of days, which system from early-mid December to you fit to match this one?
-------------
Jake,
I just looked, and amazingly the pattern on December 10th to 12th was almost identical to now. An upper low tracked out of the Rockies and into the plains states. An upper low was located near the Kansas Nebraska border near Grand Island, NE and it produced drizzle. I just compared the maps and it was unbelievable...really, but it lined up.
The next 15 days may end up being one of those periods that doesn't exactly line up though. The models are all predicting this eastern Pacific ridge to grow, lock up and produce a very wintery scenario. The last time through the cycle it didn't lock up. So, comparing this next cycle may be difficult, but it everything is falling into the "long term" longwave troughs and ridges which fit this year's pattern perfectly.

Hello, how is that 20% chance on Wedensday look? Big snow, small snow. Rain, sleet, ice? Oh, and when do you see us having a major ice storm. The one a few days ago with the sleet can sort of count, but it wasnt big enough. Any thing showing a 2002 type ice storm?

Alden,
The Wednesday system appears to an "Alberta Clipper" that just gives us a glancing blow. No big precip, maybe a few snow showers.

Brett,
We had roughly five inches in the Shoal Creek area. It was a tough measure because of all of the water content. The tops sank pretty fast.
Any idea what the snow-to-water ratio was? I would image it was low. This reminds of the big spring snowstorms that strike the northeast.

Brett, hey, I think I might be the blogger you referred to on the air at 5pm regarding the weight of the snow and my attempt at humor. Thanks! In addition to that being wet heavy snow, is it just me or is snow shoveling more fun as a kid and more of a chore as an adult? I think so, however, I still love snow! Keep up the great work!

Jay,
Thanks, I meant to mention you by name but at the last minute my brain went blank. That's what lack of sleep does to me. Thanks anyway for your humorous insight.
