8:45 PM update

Good evening,

The NWS has put us in a heavy snow warning, but the trends on radar aren't especially good. I think they have done it because 3 to 4 inches has already fallen with 1 to 4 more inches possible.

Anyway, it is a winter wonderland out there. Nearly 3 inches on the Plaza. Keep your totals coming in. I will talk about some of them on the newscast at 10.

The radar echoes are acting strangely but it still looks like we are going to have some more, but Heavy Snow Warning? Perhaps it should have been issued hours ago.

Anyway, it still has been a fun night. The disturbance is tracking through the Kansas/Missouri state line by 4 AM, but after it moves by we could still have another 1/2 to 1 inch early in the morning.

About 3 inches here near Longview Lake in Lee's Summit Gary. It is very beautiful out. Took Max our Corgy out and he had a blast in the snow. He especially likes when you make a snow ball real tight and throw it in front of him.He will fetch it and bring back what is left of it.

Gary:

Good evening sir!! It is snowing currently harder in Lawrence than I have seen since the storm in December 2005-just beautifull outside!!!! I think we have close to 3 inches here and it looks like another 2-3 hours of decent snow fall so may wind up with 4 or so when it is all said and done-reading radar rates and speeds is def. not my speciality lol!!

On a kind of funny note: It is funny to me that there is a heavy snow warning all around Lawrence: West, South, North and East!!!! I'm kind of surprised KC issued one as well, but I just have to laugh looking at the warnings on the NOAA national map!!!!

Have a great night-I will hopefully get a chance to take a good measurement tomorrow morning and will blog in what we have out here by Clinton Dam!!! Again, thanks for all the responses and keeping us informed-excellent job as always!!!!

Gary,

My husband let our two Shih Tzu's this evening about 9pm to see about 4 inches of snow, upon measuring he found there is about 4 1/2 inches accumlated. We live on the South East edge of Lee's Summit.

I don't care for snow, but the puppies enjoy jumping around in it.

I hope you have a good night.

I think they may see the turning of the storm in Central Kansas and anticipate the back edge pushing through the region. Your thoughts?

Posted by: Paul at January 20, 2007 9:10 PM

Gary, we have a little over 3 inches in KCK. Mark

Sorry to bother you again-I just thought of something-I was not trying to in any way critizise the NWS in Topeka as I do not think we need to be in one it is just funny to me-prob. should have just kept it to myself!!!! Anyway, snowing really hard here and it is just awesome!!!!

Hi Gary:

So now you are thinking they should have not issued a Heavy Snow Warning, OR are you think they did not issue one in time? Little confused there! Cannot depend on NWS like we can you! They are always all or nothing. Anyway, 3 inches easly in Overland Park but is there a break in the action? That dog gone dry slot! Maybe NWS should thought about that before they issued the warning. Good Grief 4 inches of snow warrnts a Heavy Snow Warning? When I lived in Michigan, that was nothing! What is it with those people! Bring on some real snow! Anyway GREAT JOB for going by your gut and not some computer model that cannot seem to forecast what is happening RIGHT NOW! You are one of the best forecasters around because you use more than just a computer to forecast!

GREAT JOB TEAM!

Brian,

All I know is what I see on radar. You must nowcast in these situations, which is one of the things I think we do well. New bands of snow may still form and this is why 1 to 4 more inches will fall.

Hi Gary I live in Northwest Olathe and we currently have about 3 1/2 inches and the snow is still falling steadily. It looks great but I'm glad I don't have to be out in it.

We've got 4.5" here in Greenwood as of 9:30 PM. Kids are excited about sledding on Sunday.

I just went out and checked again. At 7PM, we had 2.5 inches. At 9:45PM, we now have about 3.5. Snow is mod. to heavy. We live four miles southwest of Kingsville in Johnson Co. MO.

Posted by: Kimberley at January 20, 2007 9:43 PM

I have just under 4 inches in Blue Springs and it has pretty much been just a steady snow with only a few brief heavier periods.

Posted by: Brian Kirk at January 20, 2007 9:50 PM

Oops, scratch that 3.5 in Kingsville. I measured wrong, we are a little over 4 with moderate to heavy snow!!

Gary as of now 9:55 p.m. here in Berryton we only have a little over 2 inches, even though it has snowed moderately it is melting?? The temperate is 30. Anyway good fun with this storm and the precip is great. The radar is also starting to look sour to the south. The snow seems to be going away. Heavy snow warning?? Interesting. Keep up the good work. Michael/Berryton/Topeka

Gary,
We have about 3 1/2 inches just south of Maple Leaf Lake, located east of Odessa near the I-70 & 13 HWY junction.
It is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!
Keep up the great job. You guys are the BEST!!!

Just short of three inches here in the usually snowless northland on Barry Road just north of Weatherby Lake. The snow has been steady and light, but never heavy. Would love to see some of the heavy now that the heavy snow warning is out. Keep up the good work.

Blake in the northland snow free zone (until finally tonight!)

Snow acculm at 6 inches in Clinton,Mo at 10:32 Pm. I will update you tomorrow morning. YEAH SNOW!!!

Posted by: John Moon III at January 20, 2007 10:32 PM

Gary just one question does it look like any redevelopement at all for us down here in AC and if so how much additional Accumulations are u expecting currently we have 5 and half inches. This is a great snow im going sledding tomorrow. Hopefully we get outta school monday.

It was a great forecast by u team. You hit it right on the nail. Keep up the good work. Was hoping for more snow but oh well we currently have 19 and a half inches on the season.

Regarding the next "storm" it looks as the storm will be fairly strong just not for us. It looks like it will be taking a southerly track.

Gary,
This is weird. We finally just got our first 1/2 inch here at our house in brookside. It's not really coming down much anymore either. I drove around earlier and within 2 blocks there is probably close to 3 inches. What is going on?

Cindy,

I really don't know how that is possible. Let us know what your final total ends up being.

Dear Gary,

I've been looking at the Radar from Wichita and noticed some pretty good snow fall returns rotating around the Upper Low as it moves east northeast and it looks like the dry slot is feeling in with snow you think we could see a good 2 or 3 inches more? We have about 3 inches so far in Olathe.

Thanks,

Who is right? Wow, I watched you tonight, and you suggested the snow would shut off. I watched another station, and they said pretty much what you said, only he forecasted snow through tomorrow afternoon (mainly flurries.) Then, I looked at the NWS latest and they suggest that while the snow will end for a while, it will fill back in overnight, and 4-6 inches (more) could fall for a total of 5-7 inches (or more) across the area. The only difference between your foreacst and the others, is you kind of thought the snow would shut off overnight....while other said it would not. Although I think you did say more might fill in. Stil, I think your forecast is MUCH more accurate then the other stations (who OVER HYPE this storm to death) and the NWS. You simply tell it how it is, and don't try and over play it.

What I like about your station is you folks are all honest and up front! Oh and yea, you do not seem to hype it up for ratings like the others do! I hate that especially when reporters are standing out there in the snow, the camera points down to a ruler, and then they hype the death out of the storm! I don't see you guys doning this as much! The other stations hype the weather as though it were the end of the world (we will not mention the station that stayed on for hours last March 12th.) :-)

Have a great rest of the weekend!

Brian - Overland Park (4.5 inches of snow! WOOOOOO HOOOOO!)

Brian,

The snow slowed down, but here comes the finale. Don't worry about who was right. I fully thought this last wave could rotate through. It is exciting and I am going outside to enjoy it. There will be flurries in the morning, but we have 3 more hours of snow to go.
