Heavier band forming south of Kansas City...Major Accidents

Good afternoon,

We have had major accidents including a 35 car pile up on I-35. This 1 to 1 1/2" snow storm is causing more problems than some of the bigger snow events. Please be careful.

Below is a radar image taken around 12:50 PM. I circled the significant band of snow which developed during the past hour. It will shift east and south. This area may see 2 inches or more. The rest of us will get between 1/2" and 1" the way it is looking right now. Maybe a little more in a few spots. But, I think we will end up with our forecasted one inch of snow.

Radar 1240 PM.gif Click to enlarge (you can see the developing band to the south)

There have been a lot of accidents reported so please take it slow. The snow should taper off in a few hours. Watch the newscasts tonight as we look ahead to more winter weather.

I'm seeing some backbuilding out west. Are you seeing the same thing?

Why hasn't NOAA issued a Snow Advisory? Seems odd not too.......

Posted by: Chris B at January 31, 2007 1:11 PM

Gary, in Knob Noster at 1:20 PM the snow is getting heavier and larger flakes falling sideways. It is starting to accumulate and cover everything. I sent you an E-mail of a really bad Ice storm in Europe.....check it out when you have time. Once again your forcast was on the money, though there was no doubt it wouldn't be.

Hey Gary!

Just curious how this little snow maker fits into the LRC model?

Thanks,

Don

Don,

This entire pattern fits with the LRC. We thought we would have these types of snow events, but more like 3 or 4 inches with these not just one inch.

We have just over 1 inch of snow here in leavenworth at 1327 hours. It is still coming down pretty well here. hopefully the atmosphere is saturated enough to backfill that radar echo a little bit. Any chances of that?

Good afternoon sir!!! Still snowing here in Lawrence and it is awesome out!!! My students are going crazy-been a great day showing the radars and models to them. It is slowing down but can't complain at all-grass is pretty much covered and the roads are somewhat slick-this does not look to disappear for a spell!!!

One interesting thing about that stronger band to our south: that is pretty darn close to where the GFS and NAM showed the heavier qpf with this system-interesting stuff!!! If we just had a bit more lift and a bit stronger system...oh well-will take what we can get-snow is snow and will get to play in it this afternoon!!! Have a great day

Bill in Lawrence
------------------------
Bill,

This was a one inch snowstorm. I don't think I want to blog about it, but the bloggers would be amazed if they spent the afternoon here. From the left, the right, upstairs, downstair, viewers calls.....somehow people think we got the forecast wrong. One person came in and said man I though you said there was only going to be an inch. And I said, yes and this is how much has fallen. And the person says, that's only an inch. Amazing. It's as if no one believed our 80% chance of snow and the dusting to 2 inch forecast. Even our bosses.

The forecaster can never win.

Just got home from college and it is snowing decently, right now we have what I would call a "thick dusting", we have seen some people sliding around up here even with the low amounts of snow. I have also noticed that at times you can see the sun up here while it is snowing!
It is nice to have some snow again!
Thanks for your time.

Jim,

Great observation. This goes hand and hand with my weather pattern theory. The same pattern is cycling over and over, and even though there are differences with each storm they are all following similar paths. And, this happens every year. Gary,
This winter continues to be very disappointing for those who live in areas in Platte County. KCI only had a little more than half an inch of snow and still only has near 6.5 inches for the season so far. February had better produce more snow for areas of northern Missouri that always seem to get very little snow.
Devin
-----------------------
Devin,

It is a bit ridiculous, but somewhat expected. Every storm is taking a path that leaves the northern side with less each time. Maybe you will still get one of these.

Hey Gary,
I got your back on this one. You said 1/2 inch to an inch last night, and that's exactly what happened at KCI. It appears everyone forgot how to drive on the snow. Maybe the stars aren't alligned with Jupiter or something. I agree with you that forecasting a half inch of snow is difficult to do, and that's about as close as I've ever seen to that type of forecast proving truth! As far as I'm concerned your forecast was the most accurate, and there is no reason I can see for gunning on it. Good job, Gary!

I received 1" of snow in Blue Springs near Grain Valley. That brings me to 14.5 " of snow for the season (I don't include sleet and ice).

Keep up the good work and bring us some more snow!

Gary:

Good early evening sir!!! Quick check in from Lawrence-just came in from being out with the boys-great time-much colder (obviously) than last weeks event!! We got around an inch-if I stretched it out on a rack maybe and inch and a half-just enough to shovel the driveway and make many roads slick!!! Hope all is well in KC with the pile up.

You do indeed have a thankless job!! I'm not sure where the issues are comming from-this storm did exactly what you thought it would-you and the team forecasted it perfectly. One quick clarification: when I said it would be here for a spell, I meant it would be on the ground for a spell!! I still think it is pretty cool how the GFS and NAM showed that one heavier band on the qpf out put to our south.

Hang in there sir-you and the team do an awesome job and provide the viewers and Bloggers with some great insight that many would not share-I say kudos to you!!! Now, time to see if maybe we can get a little more of a mositure kick with the passage of front Friday and if this small snow will effect temps. Friday and Saturday-doesn't take much to amuse me does it!!!! LOL

Bill,

Yes it is amazing. I did not even want to know what other forecasts in town were, but I am certain they were all about the same with this storm. There should be praise for meteorologists today. Not criticism!

There is hope for more excitement this winter, perhaps in the next few days.

Gary, people are really complaining/criticizing/quibbling over an inch or so of snow?! You've got to be kidding. Snow forecasts are (and have been for the 39 years of my life) ranges...0" to 2", 1" - 3", 2" - 4", 3" - 5", 4" - 8", 6" - 10". Now, if a forecast range and an actual snowfall range vary by more than 4", well, then maybe complaints can start coming in...maybe.

On another topic and related to an earlier post, watching the radar loops on the NWS site this winter has been like deja vu...like watching the movie Groundhog Day! Time after time, the heaviest bands continue to be south between Ottawa and Chanute and then eastward from there. I'm moving down there! Maybe next winter it will be Ottawa to St. Joe and eastward...and the KC metro will get more of those heavier bands.

In closing, if you ever forecast 0" - 2" the night before a snow event and we actually receive 6" - 10", then I will let you know you were off and complain. Wait! If we would get 6" - 10", I definitely would NOT complain. ;-)

All the best,
Jay

Jay,

Great points! Maybe this winter will have one of those finale's in it.

Your forcast was perfect! there is no reason for anybody complaining!!
Maybe people got suprised by the slickness of the roads and it made the storm mentally seem bigger to them, well thats my attempt at an educated guess;)
we may have a third to a fourth of an inch(as I like to call it "a thick dusting") with still light flurries falling from very low clouds.
Looking at the radar in Omaha, it looks like the light flurries may continue for a little while.
Thanks for your time.
Nick in (heavily dusted) St. Joe!

Nick,

Hopefully we will get a storm to take a northern track this season so you can boast for a change.

Thanks for bringing the Omaha snow flurries to our attention. It may or may not make it down here in the morning, but that would be another dusting for you. The surface winds go calm so that area of snow may just fall apart, but it is a hint of what could happen in the next week.

Gary,

Just finished shoveling the driveway and taking the kids out for our "official" measurement: 1.75 inches in south O.P. about 162nd and Nall. That puts us at 17.6 inches for the year (8.75 on Nov. 30, 2.1" sleet, 5" on the level from 01/17 + today).

I believe "normal" snowfall is around 20" so we need a couple more inches to break that barrier.

Icefishing report: I spent most of today ice fishing--ponds had almost 7 inches of ice (only need 3-4 inches for solid icefishing). Also fished the submerged bridge on Middle Creek Lake in Louisburg. 5.5 inches on Middle Creek, but some open water by damn thanks to ducks and geese. Stay over old road bed. Continued cold weather means more ice and good fishing! No nead to head north this year.

Gary:

Good winter's morning to you sir!! Lawrence is currently sitting at about 17 degrees with the snow glistening in the moon light-beautiful out this morning. One sure sign that we have had a decent stretch of winter: 17 degrees does not seem that cold!!!!

I hope you have a better day today than yesterday. After rereading the BLOG from yesterday it is apparent you had a rough one. Hang in there-you are a fantastic meteorologist and the whole weather team is top notch. One can not even begin to count the successes you have had since arriving here in 1992 (I have followed/watched you since you began with Mr. Thompson but can't remember the exact year)-just in this year you and the team nailed the Novermber event, began discussing the Jan, 12th storm before Christmas and more specifically, you have nailed the temps. over the last week including the 50's last Friday and the 19 on Tuesday-major kudos to you and the team!!! You are all aces!!!

The modles just don't want to give us much love regarding precip. with this cold air tomorrow-it makes sense considering the LRC (I think we are in the October type cycle??) and that hisorically with this strong of a NW flow it is hard for us to get decent moisture feeds accept for the clipper or if real lucky a cut off in the SW. However, those points aside, I wonder if maybe the modles are having some troubles figuring all this out due to the massive cold air-there do seem to be some higher cloud tops forming to our North and West back in the Dakotas and Western Nebraska-for sure, you can see the arctic front!! Still holding out hope that we can squeeze another inch out of the front some how. Models are trying to pop an 850 low in Oklahoma-straws anyone!!!

I hope you have a better day-the snow is beautiful this morning and if we can hold onto it today, we may have snow on the ground for 4-6 more days-great stuff!! Will be interesting to watch the satelite and see the 12Z runs!!! Again, Kudos to you and the team!!!

Bill in Lawrence
-------------------------------
Bill,

Yesterday was a very good day, so don't worry about us. We know that our forecast was about as accurate as it can be. It started out at 5 degrees early yesterday morning, which we hit on the nose, then it snowed and warmed up to 24. Our forecast high was 27, so we were within 3. There was some negative feedback, but we really felt great about it most of the day with exception of all of the accidents. It was very slick, especially at the beginning.

The sun will probably come out strong today and do its thing in getting rid of most of this new snow. And, the entire pattern is about to go through deamplification, at least for a while.
