Quick Cold & Snow Update
Outside of a stray flurry the rest of the night will be dry...but VERY COLD. Temperatures are already in the teens and will likely drop into the single digits in spots. Winds will remain gusty tonight, so if you are out and about or just letting the dog out dress warm. Wind chills are in the single digits above and below zero. The good news is that this first chunk of Canadian air will only last 1 day.
Here's an update on the recent trends. The snow chance for Wednesday remains in the forecast and looks to be on the light side. It will be interesting to see how far the late week storm can push north. The 18Z GFS and 12Z GEM(Canadian Model) keeps much of the snow to our south...but a slight shift north would put us in a decent area of snow...at least enough to get the ground white again. The question of snow cover will directly impact how cold we get in 6-9 days when the core of the cold air begins to decend on the KC. IF there is snow...teens for highs would be a good bet with overnight lows well below zero. Keep in mind a lot of things have to happen for this scenario to pan out. The snow is a the most uncertain thing right now...but the cold looks like a lock for next weekend( at the very least below average temps).
Thanks for the reports of flurries and snow showers earlier today. If you have anything on your mind let me know. I should have time to answer some comments or questions this evening.

Hello, Ive seen this before and maybe it was from the trees, but what causes snow to fall if there are no clouds in the sky, if this can even happen? Is it natural event or a sort of happens this time then again this time sort of thing.
Anyway, if the snow DOES play out, wich I do see it happening. How much could we get accoridng to the models. But the only problem is that it is 6-9 days out, or period, this may be a storm that has not even devolped yet. Im waiting for the stormy Mid-Feburuary as you have stated. Is it looking good for a (as I keep saying) major winter storm like NOV 30th except the Low tracks south of us, and us here on the west side of the city get 18-20inche of snow? Im really happy about this cold stretch of weather ahead, but sad about the 1 day of the Canda type air. Now, if we could only get the Earth to cool down a little bit, have this ice caps EXPAND and GROW, and save the Polar Bears. By the way, do you have any info on how much the Earth WARMED and/or COOLED last year in 2006? I would really like to know. Thanks.

Alden,
Still way to early to talk snow accumulation for next week. The storms haven't formed and the models still don't have us getting much. I'm still thinking if the really cold air stays to our north until next weekend we may see a storm Thurs/Fri of next week. Right now the GFS has the storm just to our south for that time frame. It will be interesting to see if the core of the cold air drops over us next weekend.

Jeremy,
We had snow flurries several times this afternoon in the Shoal Creek area, which is in Kansas City, MO, near Liberty and in the triangle formed by I-435, I-35 and 152.
Also, I know some people have said they haven't been able to see WeatherPlus on DirecTV. I just added an over-the-area antenna to supplement my DirecTV satellite, and we see it. It is on Channel 41-3. It's certainly nice to have.

Matt,
Thanks for the flurry report. There are still a few leftover flurries on the radar, but the main focus tonight is the wind and cold. It is already around -10 in parts of the Dakotas as of 8pm!
I know we have a list of the channel numbers and cable providers where Weather Plus can be viewed. The local forecast which comes on about every 10 minutes is much more focused than other weather channel offered. Some of the 'local' forecasts on the Weather Channel are taken directly from ONE computer model and put into a 7 day forecast. I guess I'd rather have a local Weather Plus channel that gives a true local forecast with live radar every 10 minutes. Maybe I'm biased:)

You need a DVR of some type so you can see our forecasts at your leisure...or Weather Plus which is always on. Thanks for the update on the flurries, they should be done by news time tonight.

How far south is the GFS and GEM keeping the snow and how much is " a least enough to get the ground white again"?
************
David,
The GFS and GEM keep the snow over central and southern Missouri. Right now it looks like not much...but I'm not sold on the track of the potential storm. This is based off the LRC and the colder air slowing down a bit. If you like snow don't lose hope this far out.

YIKES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
For those who really want snow,
We now have temperatures well below,
what is wanted or desired.
That's what this prose inspired.
Here's to the feel of frozen paws,
of bare skin having to un-thaw.
Of digits afflicted with gangrene,
A feel and sight most definitely obscene.
A very frozen Canid (The Dog)

Dog,
Thanks for adding a softer side to our weather blog! Nice poem.

Good Early Morning to the Action Weather Team!!!!
Very cold this morning for sure-temp. right around 11 in SW Lawrence with just enough of a breeze to make it a very biting cold!! But, being the crazy person I am (to many of my friends) I like it!!!!! Before anybody thinks I have lost it, I do like cold weather but more than that-better to have the cold now than to have April be 42 with drizzle!! Let's have the cold in Winter not Spring!!
This week will be interesting for sure-looks like the 06Z GFS is trying to bring more moisture North and does slow the cold air down-Mother Nature will reveal herself when she is ready!!!
Another thing I think I have noticed is that we are still seeing the lack of strong blocking-we have just enough currently to keep the cold air shuffeling down here, but much of this is pretty progressive which I think also fits the LRC. 2-3 days of cold-moderation-2-3 days cold moderation etc. Just an obersrvation but I'm not sure if correct. Whatever the case, there is no doubt that when one takes the past 2 weeks and then this upcomming week, it has been the coldest winter type regime we have had in 2 years. You nailed this to a T!!!! The ponds will remained ice covered until mid Feb.-been a long time that we have had ponds iced up for a month!!!! Have a great and fantastic day

Bill,
WOW...it is cold outside! I saw a wind chill at on of the official obs in KC of -10 this a.m. Tuesday looks almost like a carbon copy of today. We are still tracking some snow chances for the middle and end of the week.
Thanks for checking in!

i'm with Dog... bring on the warmer weather. that said, this isn't so bad. a bit of frigid cold... it's winter after all!
WeatherPlus is a great resource, but wish when the local 'cast is on live that the graphics on the left and bottom would sync up to that forecast. it's kinda distracting otherwise.
have a great day everyone! - mt

Mike,
Thanks for watching! We are always looking to improve so thanks for the suggestion. You are right, it's winter and this isn't that cold. I just think people are getting to use to the above normal temps during winter. This is nothing compared to what may arrive next weekend!

Hi there,
I was reading the weather log for the past year or so. My husband and I are thinking about moving to MO, but I am a little weary of Tonados.... How often do you see them near Kanses City MO? Is there allot of distruction? Can one buy home insurance for tornado damage?
Laetitia Hailey
**********
Laetitia,
Severe is most common in the spring around Kansas City. Tornadoes are possible...but I wouldn't base your decision to move to KC on the very slight chance of a tornado not only striking the city...but the exact location where you are living. I think home owners insurance would cover tornado damage...but don't quote me on that. I'm new to KC and so far the people and area are first class.

Looks pretty cold in the longer term. Maybe it will shut up the global warming folks for a couple of weeks!
----------------
Karl,
So, you don't think that there is any global warming? A friend of mine just wrote a book on Global Warming called "Rough Guide to Climate Change". He tells me the sales of his book have dropped off significantly with this cold wave going on.

Jeremy:
Good afternoon sir!!! Working on class preperation, which means I sneak peaks at the models/weather lol!!!! Great typical winter's day here-still hovering around 23-I realize that many think I am strnage but I like this weather-it's January-let be cold!!!!
Looks like the last two operational GFS are trying to trend more moisture up this way-as you, Gary and the whole team always say, these are one snap shot based on set data that in reality is not set so things will change. However, the trends look better for at least some (emphasize some!!) snow flying in the next 7-9 days at times. This is going to be exciting to watch and it may be Tuesday before a sure trend sets up-IMHO (very humble indeed) those who have written off the chances for any snow at all in the next 7-9 days may be quite surprised!!!!! Too many things to account for in this period to get a solid grip on the daily weather beyond 48 hours!!
Thanks for reading and have a great day!!!!

Bill,
I'll update the blog after the afternoon model runs are completed.
Today wasn't that cold...at least compared to what it may be next weekend!
