Saturday Afternoon Update

I hope your weekend is off to a great start. Expect an area of mainly flurries(possibly a few snow showers) to push through the region this afternoon. No accumulation is expected. Otherwise, it will just be windy and turning sharply colder as the day wears on. Temperatures are below zero in parts of Minnesota this afternoon!

After the 18Z GFS comes out I'll post some new thoughts. The core of the cold air seems to shift east, then back over the Midwest, then east again with each model run. For now I'm forecasting the coldest air(same as the past several days) for just after Feb. 1. We may have a day or two with highs in the teens. We'll see if the trends continue. If you see flurries this afternoon please let me know!

It is 2:45PM. I was just outside with my dogs and it is snowing. I live in Olathe near 146th and Blackbob. Just thought I would tell you. Sure doesn't seem to be cloudy enough for snow but it is, I guess.

Barbara,

Thanks for the update. You may see another 60-90 mintues of wind swept flurries or an isolated snow shower. Then just really COLD!

We saw flurries in Lenexa around 2:30 this afternoon. We could really tell when the wind changed and the cold air started moving in.

Marlina,

Thanks for the report! Just wait until about 6-8pm tonight...then this afternoon will have felt warm!

Flurries to light snowshowers then back to flurries at 1430 at KCI. As of 1457 it is no longer precipitating over the field. No accumulation as you predicted.

************

TW,

Thanks for the report! Only a few isolated returns from KC and points north. Your flurries are about done.

Big flurries???...big flakes, but not a lot of them...if that makes sense...in NW Ray County, near Lawson.

Jody,

Thanks for the report! Your snowflakes should be done in the next 60 minutes.

Jeremy nothing here in Berryton/Topeka area as far as flurries. The temperature has dropped from 36.9 down to 30.1 as of 4:00 p.m. North wind of at least 20-30 mph. With the going back and forth of the cold air in about 7 days any signs of a storm brewing? I didn't see much as I looked at the 7 day runs. Thanks Michael/Topeka

Mike,

No great signs of a huge storm. There are a few smaller snow chances. The Wednesday snow looks light...so it does not look like a big snow maker. Once Gary gets back on Sunday I will discuss the pattern with him and we'll have a better idea of the snow chances. It is still looking pretty cold by next weekend.

Jeremy,
The Plesant Hill NWS says that the GFS model has not initizlied well with the position of the ridge in the Pacific. The NWS says that it creates too much trough energy in the southwest next weekend. I am that the ridge in the Pacific retrogrades enough so that we have another chance at a snowstorm soon. The PNA looks to stay positive as well.

Devin,

We try not to look at other forecasts so that way ours is not influenced. A good example is Gary started forecasting 50s for Friday 6-7 days out. Someone told us that ALL other outlets had 30s that far out. Of course everyone was around the low 50s by Thursday. Maybe the NWS is on to something...but I think we will still see a couple of really cold days the first week of Feb.(teens for highs?).

Maybe it is just me...but on the NCEP site last night the 00Z GFS was a little messed up.

Jeremy,

If that wed storm holds together, what can we expect, and how does that fri storm look?

Andy

**********

Andy,

KC is on the edge of both storms right now. This could easily change...especially before the big plunge of cold air arrives in about a week.

Jeremy,
I think the European model has been more consistant with the overall weather pattern, and has been more consistent forecasting the cold for the eastern half of the country. However, our location in the plains makes us vulnerable to small changes in the flow pattern in other locations, especially with the location of the Pacific ridge. I also enjoy the winter season and do not like the fact that we can get downsloping winds this far east. Maybe, when the warm air tries to return from the southwest in a few weeks we can get a bigger storm to form or more clipper systems. We seem to get far fewer Alberta Clipper systems that produce snow around here than we used to.

Devin,

The are a couple of snow chances around Feb. 1. One Wednesday and then another Thurs/Fri. We'll have to keep a close eye on the second of those snow chances. That one may be more of a 'storm' before the cold air plunges in.

We had very very minor snow flurries in Lee's Summit around 4:00. It didn't last long.

Lainie,

Thanks for the report. So far the radar has been much more impressive than the ground reports. I think a good deal the moisture evaporated before reaching the ground.
