Few Thunderstorms

LIVE ESP continues to show isolated showers and thunderstorms moving through eastern Kansas and western Missouri. Expect the showers and storms to hang around until mid afternoon before exiting the area. The storms are developing on the leading edge of warmer temperatures and increasing moisture. The storms will stay below severe levels. Rainfall totals may be up to one or two tenths of an inch of rain if you get caught directly under a thundershower...otherwise most totals will be a few hundredths of an inch.

Temperatures this afternoon will be in the 50s to near 60 degrees in most locations today with breezy conditions.

**Hopefully everyone caught Gary's forecasts yesterday at 5, 6, & 10pm because he was mentioning the possibility of these showers today. He had a 50% chance of rain in the forecast for this afternoon.**

I am NOT happy about the following NWS discussion for next week...I may need to get in touch with you regarding some spotting on my journey down south.

OUR ATTENTION THEN TURNS TO YET ANOTHER POTENT STORM SYSTEM PROGGED
TO DIVE TOWARD THE PAC. COAST ON TUESDAY. IT COULD BE NOTED...THAT
WHILE STILL A SIGNIFICANT WAY OUT FROM THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS
SYSTEM...BOTH THE 00Z AND 12Z GFS SHOW A SOLUTION SIMILAR TO THAT OF
THIS WEEKENDS STORM.

Scott,

The pattern is going through some strange transition, but still directly related to the overall pattern. I hope you don't miss anything, but I am concerned.

When you say FAR south how far south are you talking for SEVERE WEATHER? I live down in LINN COUNTY (one-hour south of KC) we are never included in the forecast for some reason but other ciites towns the same distance east/north + west are covered. YOU are our only connection to SEVERE weather and take cover.

********

Eric,

Your chances are better than metro KC, but with that said the chance of severe weather on Saturday is pretty slim in our minds. The SPC is a bit more bullish on the chances of severe weather for Saturday.

Weather Team-
The NWS is calling for tornadoes. What's yor take on this threat?

Which NWS office? KC's mentions a very small chance of what you are talking about. Gary and the rest of the weather team think the chances of any severe weather on Saturday are very small.

So far all I heard in Lenexa earlier is..one whimpering golden retriever, two light claps of thunder, 2 minutes of moderate rain , and then ..nada. Boring!

This storm looks to be a strong one if it were April or May we would be in for a WILD ride, Today has been windy in St. Joe with altocumulus ruling the skys some occasionally thick and dark but no precip yet, at least I haven't seen any. No severe weather, but it will be interesting to see if someone gets a cold air funnel or very small hail due to the cold core of air in the upper levels being right over the surface low.
And I have a question, why does the NWS issue Tornado Warnings in situations where it is clearly a cold air funnel senario, at least I have seen this happen on a few occasions where there have been cold air funnels in the region and the NWS was issuing tornado warnings but the local stations were saying that they were cold air funnels and not to worry( It's been few years since the last big "cold air funnel" outbreak if you will).
BTW cold air funnels are my favorite type of funnel since you could watch one and not have to worry about it doing damage, I hope to see one someday.)
Thanks for your time.
Nick in (windy) St. Joe!!!
--------------------
Nick,

Except the NWS could issue a warning and then some will hype up the cold air funnel way too much.

Anyway, this is a strong storm.

Weather Team-
I went to www.noaa.gov/wx.html amd got this:IN ADDITION...ISOLATED LOW-TOPPED SUPERCELLS MAY FORM DURING THE LATE
MORNING AND AFTERNOON HOURS MAINLY ALONG AND SOUTH OF THE MISSOURI
RIVER. THE MAIN THREATS WITH THIS ACTIVITY WILL BE LARGE HAIL IN THE
STRONGER STORMS. IN ADDITION...IF ENOUGH HEATING AND MOISTURE CAN
POOL CLOSE TO THE SURFACE LOW...AN ISOLATED TORNADO THREAT WILL ALSO
EXIST.
Thanks-Eric

What does the snowfall potential currently look like on Saturday night into Sunday between here and Omaha. I have family coming down tomorrow morning and they need to decide whether they will leave Saturday night or Sunday. Please provide your best estimate at this time and when driving conditions would be worse.

Hi Gary, Jeremy and the rest of the weather team. It is windy out here and is 69 degrees here in Topeka/Berryton. It feels like severe thunderstorm weather. Doesn't quite have the feel for tornadoes, not sultry enough. Personally I like snow but I hope it stays north. It looks like it might even though this morning our NWS was saying 2-4 inches. by Sunday morning. Have a great time with this huge strom system. Michael/Topeka/Berryton

Why does it seem like your weather team always tries to put in a shameless plug in your blogs about always being right? If Gary had forecast a severe thunderstorm this afternoon I'd be more impressed, but gloating over a 50 percent chance of meaningless showers seems a little overkill?

************

Jim,

There were no severe thunderstorms around today...just a few showers and storms. So the 50% chance covered the number of showers and storms we saw. I would not call it gloating...just letting people who expected a dry day know that we predicted some rain for today. Many people who missed the forecast were surprised...that's why I included it.

Weather team,
Does the chance for severe weather increase to the southeast? I live in Warsaw, Mo, and our area got hit last year, so we are all a little nervous...Its hard to get a forecast here, too

Posted by: Dee at February 23, 2007 3:42 PM

ya know I don't want to challenge the masters but based on everything I'm seeing....it looks to me that severe thunderstorms are a possibility tomorrow. I think this low pressure system has the ability to place us briefly in the warm sector tomorrow. Even if we don't get in the warm sector there should be enough instability in the cold air to produce severe elevated thunderstorms. Right now as I'm blogging there is a severe thunderstorm in the cold air in Iowa right now. I just think this storm has enough power to do it. I've been watching the weather channel and weather in general for 18 years since I was practically a baby and I've seen it happen many times. But you guys are the masters and I bow down to you. I just wanted to put my two cents out there. Keep up the good work guys.

Hello,
Whats the deal with ESP: Live? I know you guys must have a new tool but arent those watches and warnings? And can you still view radar on it? I know I sound like an idiot and should know the answer to it,but, I was just wondering.
----------------------------
Alden,

We were just testing out the new cool feature that I just tried to use on the air. We left it on with all of those colors. It is off now. But, it I am going to try again to show it on the air in a few minutes. I click on a county and it will show what watch or warning it is under. It really is a nice tool for the viewer, if I use it right?

Watch and let me know what you think.
