Gusty Winds & Some Sunshine
The cold front associated with the Alberta Clipper blew thru the area overnight. Temperatures soared to 37 degrees at KCI around 11pm last night, and then quickly fell into the lower 20s behind the front. The biggest change was probably the wind! Winds turned to the northwest and gusted over 40mph. Here is a look a some of the peak wind gust overnight.
KCI: 45 mph Lawrence: 44 mph St. Joseph: 38 mph Gardner: 39 mph
The strong winds caused quite a bit of blowing and drifting snow in open areas. The winds will gradually ease up today and should be around 10 mph by late this afternoon.
There has already been some sunshine this morning and that will likely be mixed with some clouds this afternoon. The clearing line(completely clear) is in central Kansas. That will work into the region and should arrive by late today or this evening. Skies will be clear tonight and expect one more cold night...then warmer temps...finally! The warm-up will be the focus on NBC Action News today at 5 & 10pm.
I'll post an updated look at our cold snap later today. Have a great weekend!

I was wondering if you expect the storm around the 25th to still be a huge snow storm? Will there be another cold wave to make it snow or will it be rain?
***********
Tabitha,
As we expect based off the LRC the models continue to indicate a storm around the Midwest anywhere from Feb. 25-27. The typde of precip. that will fall is still tricky. Probably some rain at the start. This storm will begin to show up on the 7 day forecast beginning this evening.

Jeremy,
I was just looking at springfield missouri forecast discussion from the nws they are calling for maybe the first severe weather event next weekend from that storm that is due in by the LRC are we going to get that too or well we see more of a winter type precip event or much needed rain, anyway it looks to be active next weekend into march.
*********
J,
We are almost into March...so any storm that comes thru has to be watched closely for a severe weather potential or snow potential:)

I see the NWS has intoduced the possibility of a storm on Fri/Sat of this week. This is the storm that you have been talking about in the LRC. Even though I would like this to be snow the NWS is talking about thunder in there forecast. I have been telling everybody at work to expect this storm and snow. Do you think the cold air will be close enough to wrap in an turn this to snow lter in the weekend.
**********
Kurt,
As of now it looks like the storm would start out as rain...then maybe some snow on the backside. The path and precipitation type is still a big question since the storm is still about a week away.
It is amazing how the LRC can predict a storm in the area for a day or two window months out.

Jeremy,
I was wondering if the weather team has access to the Heating Degree Day numbers and if you do how they compare to the previous 10 winters or so, well winter to date anyway.

Gary, I am worried that the storm next weekend will be rain I really hope that some cold air will be around then. Is the arctic air going to be anywhere nearby then? I know it is still very early but I am a little concerned.(being a snowlover!)
**********
Brent,
There will be some cold air in the Plains...but will it make it in before the precip. shuts off? Still way to early to tell. Keep in mind with any storm that heads our way now...we are fighting the fact that average highs are in the mid 40s. Just going off that, the odds are probably higher for storms to produce more rain than snow from here on out. Just having a storm around the area(rain or snow) would be another step forward for Gary's theory.

Wow. We've still got inches of snow on the ground and folks are "worried" that we won't get...wait for it...MORE SNOW?? I guess it's a difference on par with that of Democrats and Republicans. Personally, and I know I speak for others as well, I'm ready for SPRING with its sunshine and warmth and NO SNOW. Aren't you guys tired of dirty cars, too? ;-)
***********
Frank,
I have no idea what color my car is! It is impossible to keep clean. A good car washing day would probably be Wednesday of this week. Most of the snow should be melted and you'll have a couple of days to enjoy a clean car!
I'm with you...bring on spring!

Jeremy, how did you live without the LRC before? Its kinda like cheating, huh?
********
Scott,
LOL! It is great...we almost know how the models will fall into place. I think I now know why many other weather sources do their winter forecasts after Gary:)

Jeremy, you have had oodles of practice with snow storms, just wait until you see Spring with the severe weather and having the LRC to rely on. It will be a rush...
*********
Scott,
First I'm looking forward to some warmer weather...then severe weather.

What is tonight's forecast low? I cannot find it on the website.

Marcus,
19 for KC. Some areas may be a bit cooler if winds would go calm for any amount of time.
Don't forget you can always call the Weatherline at 913-831-4141 for the latest forecast.

Jeremy,
It is exciting to see the storm show up on the 18Z GFS for the 25th. It looks like the potential storm could be dynamic with good dynamical and evaporative cooling. Hopefully, the models will keep the showing this storm because it fits the LRC.
Devin

Devin,
The models have been showing the storm for about a week now(in some form). It seems like we have been talking about it for 2 months though:)
