NAM model this afternoon

Good afternoon,

It is 74 degrees on our Olathe weather now site. WOW! The warm front is stalling just north or downtown. We are set up for severe thunderstorms. How severe? Hail is the main threat tonight.

The latest NAM has a lot of rain, thunderstorms and then still snow on the back side tomorrow morning. The other models take the snow to our north. One thing for certain this is a very strong and fast moving storm.

Hey bloggers, if you experience any hail or severe weather tonight please blog your reports to us. We will be checking the blog closely.

According to the SPC it looks like the tornado threat is greater SE of here, down near the Ozarks region. What are the chances for us in the metro? Also, when do you expect storms in the area? Say around midnight or so?

Hey Gary...currently 71 in Overland Park with Barometer fallllllllling....feels like a juicy spring day outside. Wonder if and when the caps are gonna break.

The Sun has broke out in St. Joe!, WOW thats a warm front. Do you think that St. Joe could still have some elevated storms with some hail?
The clouds had a neat "striped" structure to them when they were clearing to. Looks to be an interesting night!
Thanks for your time.
Nick in mild/sunny St. Joe!

Nick,

The warm front is winding into the strong surface low. It will be interesting to see how it sets up by 7 PM.

Wow, this really reminds me of last March 12th.....severe weather supposed to be south of us....warm front not supposed to go through us....71 degrees here by Powell Gardens...

Last March there were so many tornadic cells, I had a hard time keeping up with them as they moved towards us....

Hey remember when you said on the news yesterday today would be warmer but not as nice because of the clouds and wind? Wanna change that? I think today turned out to be warmer, just like you predicted, but it truly surpassed yesterday!

GARY! IT'S 72 DEGREES IN LEE'S SUMMIT!!! THIS IS GOOD ONE BECAUSE IT FEELS AWSOME AND TWO WE GET SOME GOOD ENTERNAINMENT TONIGHT! I'M TALKING ABOUT SEVERE STORMS! OH YEAH! I WILL BE WATCHING FOR YOU TONIGHT WITH YOUR ESP! HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!

Hey Gary do u think there will be a Severe Storm watch issued or a tornado watch i just read the latest MD. It looks like Appleton City is in the area of discussion.

I think there's a typo on the 7 day forecast chart showing 40 for the high Thurs and the low 56?

Gary,

Whats the outlook for potential tornadic activity tonight? Don't the odds of that happening decrease dramatically once the sun goes down?

Posted by: dkreifels at February 28, 2007 4:05 PM

what time tonight do you expect the storms to hit the Olathe/Lenexa area?

Hi Again Gary,

I'm noticing that the dewpoints are dropping from w to e and that the dry line is now through the area. is the dry line expected to retreat westward. because as i've always known, if the dryline is through then the threat for storms is over. What's up?
---------------------------------------
Jonathan,

The dry line will retreat.

Dew Points are still in the mid 30's...

Posted by: Dave C. at February 28, 2007 4:27 PM

gary,

the sun has just come out up here in Chillicothe, but do you think some of those big storms could make it up this far north east or will they stay mostly toward the metro area? and u bet i will report any hail or severe weather up here if we have any, im gonna be watching the weather outside very closely throughout the night tonight.

Posted by: Randy at February 28, 2007 4:38 PM

Our high was 74' in Lee's Summit at 4PM. I think here, we're a target for a storm and you need to fix your 7 day forecast.

Gary, I wasnt sure if you got my blog about the threat for strong tornadoes in Edgerton, MO or not. Are we in a moderate risk? I hate severe storms, they really scare me. Thanks, Robin

Posted by: robin at February 28, 2007 4:49 PM

Gary....Any idea when all this will start up? I know it may be an impossible question but I thought I would ask anyway.

Do you think that johnson county,ks will come under any watches or warnings tonight.

Posted by: Jeff at February 28, 2007 5:00 PM

Gary, have you ever considered putting a glossary on the web site so us meteorologically-challenged folks can more easily find out what you're talking about? NAM, SPC, etc. Thanks.

Hello Gary,
Just wondering if it snow's here in the Metro KC, what time are we looking at and how long will it last? With it been warm today and 40 and windy will it have a tough time sticking? Thanks

Gary,

The storms are firing South of Emporia rapidly! They seem rather impressive for as quickly as they developed. Are these along the warm front or dry line or is this where the warm front and dry line both meet?

Posted by: Jon at February 28, 2007 5:38 PM

There appears to be a SUPERCELL thunderstorm headed this way. Is this true? and will we see any severe weather??

Posted by: Alden at February 28, 2007 5:41 PM

Hello Mr. Lezak, the t-storms seem to be forming along a boundary. Is this correct?

Posted by: Dan at February 28, 2007 6:04 PM

I have a GREAT feeling KC WILL see some bad weather. What do you think. Could we have some over here by the Legends??

Posted by: Alden at February 28, 2007 6:04 PM

Gary,
It's strange that, although the moderate threat is southeast of here, the tornado watch and developing storms are SOUTHWEST of K.C. Why is this?! Has the moderate risk shifted farther west in your opinion? Kathleen

Posted by: kathleen at February 28, 2007 6:05 PM

Gary,

FYI, We are getting a very rapid development of strong up drafts and cumulus clouds in Olathe.

Hey Team,

I was driving from Gardner to Paola, via Gardner Rd (Osawatomie Rd to Harmony Rd) over Hillsdale Lake and experienced hail. It came up fast, at 223rd and Gardner Rd we were hit with a few sprinkles, by the time I turned SE to head through the State Park and over the lake we were fully in the hail storm. Thankfully it smashed on contact although I did see hail stones bouncing off the road, if my 2.5 yr old son wasn't here with me (Dad is on his way home) I'd be back out in the jalopy taking pictures. When I got home (south of 255th on Harmony Rd) it hadn't even rained here yet. I'm originally from New England and I really must say this weather fascinates me. Very exciting!

Just giving you and update. We have a deluge of nickel sized hail out at 120th and Quirvira!

Posted by: Justin at February 28, 2007 6:40 PM

Gary, 6:38 in northeast Olathe, we had hail probably for a couple of minutes, largest was just over 1/4 inch - probably 5/16ths. Strong, constant thunder and lightning.

Gary,

6:40PM update:
In Olathe, we're on the Northern edge of a small set of cells producing small hail and wind. Nothing too terrible...yet. I see there is a set of larger cells heading this way.

Hail, we had hail. We were driving south from Gardner to Hillsdale Lake and at 223rd st it started sprinkling, another mile up the road and we were in driving rain, then shortly after that hail. Thankfully the hail smashed on contact although I did see hail stones bouncing off the pavement in front of us, when I could see! By the time I got over the lake it had all stopped, rain and hail. Then on to the house, just 1 mile south of the lake and it hadn't even rained here....yet! Very exciting. If I was to guess I would say the hail was about the size of whoppers candies, bigger than peas for sure. Enjoy the rest of the night, this weather is sure exciting to a girl from New England. Fascinating is probably the best word for it.

Gary,

We just had a nice spring thunderstorm here in Lenexa. Lots of pea sized hail (the ground looks like we had snow) and steady sheets of rain. Lasted about 20 minutes. Now we just hear a few rumbles and the rain is light. More coming I hope. We love a good old fashioned thunderstorm!

Gary...made it to the conference. On the way, it was very interesting to see the difference a few hundred miles makes. Heading down 35 at about 2-3PM, I noticed a sharp temp increase at that time it was about Ottawa. The temp gauge on the truck went from 61 to 73 within about 15 miles, and remained constant at 71-73 through 8PM. Also, as I progressed south, I could note the humidity growing. This whole time, it was clear. As I neared Wichita, there was a line of clouds just starting to form. I could tell there was some very strong sheer as the towers were being bent horizontal at about the 850-500mb level. I was able to keep an eye on this storm for quite a while. As I got even on the W side of it, the columns were building on each other, and more of a top was forming. As I passed the area, it seemed these storms built beyond the sheer and became rather strong. I was able to get some pics. I have to give kudos to your wireless app. I was able to keep connected to the KSHB WAP site using my phone and able to keep up with the recent radar for the area which aided in my travel. For the entire trip, I was driving into some very constant 15-25mph S to SE winds. As I got down in OK, I could see the mid level clouds with a very sound cap. No worries down here, but will be watching this evening for the KC area.

Later...

Hey there team. Great coverage tonight. Here in Clinton, I was able to see the wall cloud from a very tall vantage point here in town. Looked like it was in the rural Urich area heading east, northeast. Very impressive storm. We could feel the flow into that storm with 30 mph gust. Looks like all clear for the short term here. Still a very moist air mass still sticking around here in Clinton. Might be enough to fuel another storm or two. LOL. Take care guys. Jim/Clinton, Mo

Unbelieveable job this evening before the 10pm news! I am watching your analysis of the storm on streaming action weather plus. Very interesting & important to show the 3-d of the storm, showing where the heavy rain, hail & rotation are happening.

Not that I would look anywhere else for weather, but its amazing that we can watch live coverage of the storm on the web. Kudos to you, the weather team and everyone at KSHB for making this happen!!

Posted by: Scott at February 28, 2007 10:08 PM

Holy Cow - what a weather night - is this rare tornado/snow combination partly because of El Nino or what?

We've got a student at Emporia State who says they have a tornado about 8 miles east of town and they're getting heavy rain, wind, pea and marble-sized hail and lots of large lightning on campus.

Do you think that will hold together moving up I-35 to Johnson County, KS, drift north toward Wyandotte or Leavenworth Counties or dissipate before reaching the Metro?

Also, any thoughts about whether we'll get any breaks in the storm cells that keep training through? The dogs need 'last outs' but none of us like being outside in a T-storm . . .

Just a quick update with what has happened in Warrensburg, at least as far as I could tell. I live just about 6 miles east of Warrensburg, right between Warrensburg and Whiteman AFB. Despite that distance, I live on a hill and can look down into Warrensburg. Normally I can see the lights of town--but not tonight. At 10:40 the lights of Warrensburg were blotted out by something moving through town. The power never went out and I never saw a funnel cloud. However, there was some serious inflow as we had serious gusts from the south and southeast moving toward town. There was definitely circulation present, but it was wrapped by rain and hail and I couldn't see it from where I was. I can say that with the first supercell, we had heavy pea size hail and with the second supercell, we didn't have any rain or hail, just the inflow gusts. Hope you find something here helpful. Thanks for all the coverage, everything you guys have done tonight has been greatly appreciated.

Hello weather team. I live just south of Kingsville MO. At Ten PM, our satellite went out and we looked outside and saw what we believed to be a wall cloud. We have no basement, so we decided to drive down to our neighbors for shelter. We steppped outside to get to the car and the wind slammed the car door on my leg. I couldn't even walk, the wind kept switching directions it seemed, and the hail was very large (golf ball size) and painful. We made it to our neighbors house and stayed for five minutes. When we returned, we had siding from the house ripped off, and the swing set my three year old had was thrown out to the WEST. It was held down by cinderblocks, and they are missing. Right after we walked through the door, our friend called to confirm that a tornado touched down south one mile south of Kingsville, which is where we live. All I can say, is that what we walked through to get to the car was the scariest thing I have experienced in my life. Thank goodness for a weather radio!!

As the NBC coverage ended and the tonight show began Olathe experienced a new thing. In addition to all the rain the hail looked like snow everywhere. After the rain ended my friend and I walked down the street to creek West of MidAmerica Nazarene University. It was about 8-10 feet high. Usually our church walks it to pick up the trash. WOW, what a sight. I have lived here for seven years and have never seen it so full. Thanks for the great coverage. By the way I have cell phone coverage of the 12 A.M. hail storm. soulfisher@hotmail.com
