Oh my.....A surprise, but look at last nights blog

Good evening,

Heavy snow will be ending from west to east by 7 PM.

You know how I can get emotional. The calls coming in saying that we have been wrong all year are about to drive me crazy, this one lady just called telling me that I haven't gotten one forecast right all year and everyone else has. I know she's wrong, but man it is tough to listen to. O.K. this is a surprise, but how much of one really. Look below, from last nights entry:

Just northeast of the center could be a band of 3 to 5 inch snows. If this just digs a bit harder on Friday morning as it enters the plains the forecast could change fast. We could be in it. But, at this moment I very much doubt it. This is what makes weather so fascinating though. A slight difference in the track of a storm could mean a huge difference in what we experience.

So, I am surprised. But, I did say this might happen today. There is no doubt, and this shows, from the calls coming in, that you are only as good as your last forecast.

O.K. I am over it now. I will be fine. Don't worry about this, just be careful and enjoy the surprise snowstorm.

And.........Another band of snow is developing to our north. This is the one we expected for later tonight. We will be tracking this tonight at 10 PM.

Gary,

Each storm you have predicted this year had been very close if not perfect. You talked about this happening today on Monday before the snow on Tuesday.

Gary,
I just want to tell you that I think you are awesome and I choose to watch YOUR weather forecasts over all the others in KC. I know you can't be right 100 percent of the time - weather just doesn't work that way since there are so many factors involved! SO keep it up you are doing a great job!!!!!

Posted by: Tamara at February 16, 2007 4:51 PM

Gary,
Don't worry about all of the negative comments, you and your team do a great job and have been the most accurate all winter long. Keep up the Good work

Now Gary, you know people get as emotional over the weather as you do. As far as the lady who called in, it may just be a case of too much winter weather for her this year. I find your forecasting to be quite accurate. Your weather team is who I turn to most often and I don't even live in the area! Hang in there, and keep up the good work!

Posted by: janene at February 16, 2007 4:52 PM

Don't let them get to you, Gary. Many of us believe you're the most accurate one out there!

Keep up the good work! -- Kathy

Gary just give me the numbers of the people that are caling u and i will leave a bad message on their answering machine.

But back to the weather does it look like appleton could see 2 or more inches?

Posted by: Daniel at February 16, 2007 4:53 PM

Don't let those calls get you down, Gary! Those of us who read the blog know where to go when we want the RIGHT information...This snow is kind of fun, even if a little bit of a surprise. I grew up in Wyoming, where the weather changes on a dime, and I enjoy this kind of afternoon.

Posted by: Tara at February 16, 2007 4:54 PM

GARY and TEAM, keep up the good work. I was one who said you "blew things out of proportion" and "hyped things up." I was wrong. After following your blog for about a year, I tell all my family and friends about the blog. You guys are so goooood at forecasting. Sometimes things happen, but that is the fun of weather. Please continue to show passion for your work. That is what makes you the best. Also don't get upset at what people say. These are the same people who go out and buy 2 gallons of milk, 3 loaves of bread and 100 pounds of rock salt when a winter storm is in the forecast. Your frustration with these people only shows how much you like your job and care about serving the people of KC. THANKS!!

Posted by: scott j at February 16, 2007 4:55 PM

Gary,

I want you to know that I used to be an avid weather watcher for another news channel. When the storm came in November I was trying to figure out what in the world was going on. I went to all the the websites and found your weather blog. It came in very handy as I found out what the weather was going to do. I go to school at UCM and had to head home that weekend so I needed to know if I needed to leave Thursday night or wait till Friday. I read your weather blog and decided to take your word and head home. Thank goodness I did because if not I would have been snowed in! My roommate came home the next day and usually the drive takes us about an hour, it took her 6 hours to get home! Ever since then, I have been an avid viewer of your broadcast and I read your blog just about everyday! Thank you for all that you do, you are much appreciated! We now rely heavily upon your forecasts to make our decisions if the weather could get bad! Once again, thanks!

Posted by: Leighanne at February 16, 2007 4:56 PM

Gary,

Please don't listen to the critics...there will always be critics. You guys are still my favorite weather forecast. I don't even bother with the others. I appreciate the enthusiasm, the pride, and the humility. keep up the great work.

Thanks,
Stacy

Gary-

Don't let your feel bad hang out. Those of us who watch you on a daily basis know that you are right on the money. I am a head high school baseball coach and no matter what decisions I make during a game, someone is always upset. I coun't on you when making all decisions regarding games and practice. Katie Horner's mom should stop calling you..........she is just jealous.

Posted by: Jay at February 16, 2007 4:57 PM

Don't worry we all know how good you are. I didn't have control over the TV last night at work, and they didn't even mention a chance. You can't be exactly right all of the time, but it is nice that you try so hard to be.

You're my wife's weatherman of choice and since moving here from Georgia in late '05 she's become a bit of a weather nut!
Thanks for your hard work.

Gary,

The woman you spoke of offers a splendid example of the difference between a responsible viewer, and someone who talks to hear their head rattle. I urge you to consider those who offer constructive criticism supported by points of fact, and ignore those who go through life ignorant and intellectually irresponsible. You do a darn good job. Me and my family depend on you. Remember that.

Hi Gary, This is my first time commenting on your blog. It sounds to me that the lady to told you that you've been wrong all year has an IQ of 1. Other people including me know that you have the most accurate forecast in Kansas City area and that your IQ is like 650. Don't feel bad about what the others say. I trust your forecast and only yours because I believe in the LRC and I believe in you too. So lets just be happy you werent right on this time and enjoy the snow!

Posted by: Jonathan Katz at February 16, 2007 4:59 PM

Huh! Boy, that lady was mean! You're right, she is wrong. Only YOU have gotten the forecast RIGHT the whole year. Everybody else has had it wrong. Maybe she just cant/wont except the fact (yet mabye) that you are Certified Most Accurate by WEATHERATE. Yea, maybe she said that because you were wrong this time. Sorry I said that but you kinda were.

However, I would like to know the EXACT day (if possible) when you will post the forecast ratings. I know they come out every 6weeks, and it has seemed like 6weeks. I would REALLY like to know where you and everybody else stands. As far as I know, your lead has increased FURTHER yet.

Posted by: Alden at February 16, 2007 5:02 PM

Gary:

I know you are extremely busy and surely don't need anyone to defend you as your and the teams abilities/forecasts speak/stand for themselves-however, I was just getting ready to type this before your update so I'll say it anyway:

Beyond the blog entry last night, you responded to me this morning that changes were a foot and that this would be interesting to follow and could offer a surprise-you discussed the possibility that the snow on the ground could cuase our temps. not to rise as much as models were saying thus altering the track of the low some what. Not even the 18Z RUC picked up on this band and that is the best short range synoptic/mesoscale model there is-the snow is not a surprise the intensity-maybe, but you and Jeremy both blogged around 2:00 that this was forming-I'm sorry, but I just had to say something-you all did a great job with this-you gave the hints-Being in the position you are in, there is no way you could of said at 8:00 A.M. this morning that we were going to have a massive band of wind blown snow enter here at 4:00 P.M.-the hint was there, but there was not any model support or even staelite/radar support-it is similar to saying in the morning we have a chance of thunderstroms this afternoon and then having those go severe(how many times has that happened in the past 100 years-20,000??)-weather changes on a dime especially here-but the fact remains, you and the team gave the hints and said what had to happen and that there wasn't a great chance but it was there-what else can you do??? I say kudos to you and the team-I doubt anybody else really even gave hints of what could happen. Sorry, my rant is over

Oh, it is still snowing here in Lawrence-and yes, I am enjoying the surprise intense snow.
Have a great night. You and the Team are TIGHT!!!!!

Temps dropped to 25.7 in extreme South OP (162nd & Nall). Heavy snow with about 1/2 accumulation so far. Visibility about 1/3 mile.

Don't sweat the phone call. There are some who really don't pay attention to the different forecasts and as a result they become confused. Your forecasts and passion are noticed by those who actually pay attention and follow weather closely. My son's Karate instructor has some good advice: You're only in control of those who are interested and want to learn. His instructions are not for those who don't want to learn.

90% of your audience (and it's a growing audience) is here to pay attention and learn. Don't let one or two drag the whole class down!

Posted by: Brad at February 16, 2007 5:04 PM

Man, talk about people who aren't happy unless they can gripe about something-and in this case unwarranted seeing as how you outlined the possibilities! They live in/near KC for crying out loud. (up to just over an inch now in OP!)

Posted by: CJ at February 16, 2007 5:05 PM

Don't worry about the angry phone calls. Just keep up the good work. I've been telling my teacher friends about the great forecasting work by Gary Lezak and team.

Gary - Don't worry about it! I can't believe people actually call you to complain. That makes me sad for you! Life happens, and you are right so much of the time! I hope those calls don't ruin your weekend.

Not to knitpick in your current state, but saying "Just northeast of the center could be a band of 3 to 5 inch snows. If this just digs a bit harder on Friday morning as it enters the plains the forecast could change fast." [good catch], but following it up with "But, at this moment I very much doubt it." is a bit confusing.

I guess you are in a bit of a catch 22 due to the sensitivity or lack thereof of the common viewer. The above statement is a bit of a hedge...kinda like saying there is a shot of winning the lottery with the ticket you just bought, but following it up with that you doubt it will happen, and then hitting it and saying - "told ya so"..

Dunno. I understand the complexity of forecasting, so maybe I am a bit more understanding..I am unlike the normal viewer in that I know the percentages are an educated guess, but know if something is being stated as possible, it will be in the area and likely something to watch.

Gary...I think everyone was suprised a bit with this, even knowing it was possible. Don't fret the viewers that don't pay attention or know what they are talking about.

Remember..at the end of the day, if the weather is so important to someone, they will/should dig deeper to understand to the level of what is commonly shown on this blog.

Team, you are doing a great job....
-----------------
Scott,

Exactly! This is why there is no doubt that I blew the forecast, pun intended ("I very much doubt it"). I admit it. We blew it. We just knew strange things could happen today. I appreciate all of the support from everyone, but I didn't intend to turn this into that.

Gary, don't worry about those people. You are the ONLY Station/Blog I look at for school day forecast and the dismissal of students at our building during bad weather. You are by far the most accurate and humble of any weather person out there. Keep up the good work.

There is just no pleasing some people. I, too, am a believer in your theory and love the interaction and the huge amount of information you share, especially through the blog. I could say to ignore the negatives, but I know that is much easier said than done. I for one think you guys are the best all around, and I am very appreciative of how well you keep us updated on developments through the blog. This weather fanatic thanks you all!!!

Posted by: Stacey at February 16, 2007 5:17 PM

Gary,

Don't let those negative comments get to you. Your forecast has been rated the most accurate in KC and everyone knows you can't be right 100% of the time. You, by far, are the most enthusiastic and knowledgable forecasters and that's much appreciated by me and many others in town. Thanks for all you do to keep us updated on what's going on outside.

Posted by: Allison at February 16, 2007 5:18 PM

I don't understand how anybody can watch all 4 local forecasts and then say that kind of stuff. You guys are the most accurate for all forecasts. Keep it up!!

Posted by: Brian Kirk at February 16, 2007 5:23 PM

Don't worry about it.

Actually if I am not mistaken you were the one that on Sunday or Monday warned us about a potential Alberta Clipper and snow on Friday.

Gary,

If you got everything right 100% of the time, your name would be God, not Gary. Obviously the woman who called you complaining watches your forecasts or she wouldn't know that your forecasts were different from the other weather stations. I personally appreciate your honesty, how excited you get with weather, and your willingness to change your mind to tell us things are changing instead of being stubborn just to say you were right. Have a great weekend and remember why NBC Action Weather is the most watched station in the metro.

Hello, it is me again. Sorry if I sounded mean in my last comment. But if you felt insulted and thought you shouldnt reply, you can. Has any of the data suggested that the Low go further West yet? Because it sure does seem like that. Over here there was a small White Out, but A lOT of blowing snow. If anyone is still mad at you, well, boo hoo. It's NOT your fault this happened. It's the weather systems fault! Dont take it personally. It is not your fault. Just ingore the negative comments and remarks. Only pay attention to the good ones. Yes, we are like you said in it, and it did dig further. Just keep up the work. I find it so very hard to watch another staion.

Again, when is the EXACT date (if you can) you plan to post the Weather Ratings? I'm really looking forward to them.

Cool snowstorm!!! We're lovin' it up here in Leavenworth. It's looks like we have at least an inch or more (hard to say because of the wind) in the last few hours. Here's hoping that second band comes through again for us tonight! You drive carefully too...

We'll look forward to your forecast updates tonight.

Gary I'm really mad at you and your weather team.
I can't get enough of your forcasts! Let's drop the local news, sports and commercials and just have a 1/2 hour of weather every evening! My wife knows not to talk to me when you come on the screen but you always taunt me with a brief mention of weather at the beginning of the news then I have to wait through all the boring murders, car chases, earthquakes and talking head politicians until you come back! You are a mean man! :o)
Can you talk a bit more tonight of the storm for the 21st time frame. Does how tonight's storm is tracking have any implications for next week?
I'm taking my kids sledding tomorrow to take advantage of the fresh powder and in case this is it for the winter.
Keep up the good work!

Posted by: Dwighit at February 16, 2007 5:42 PM

As far as not having accurate forecasts ... The last storm that we had I watched two different forecasts: yours (the one I rely on) and another (because it comes on an hour earlier). The other forecast said that those of us south of the city would only get about an inch; north of the city would get the 3-4". You said everyone would get about the same 4 or 5" as I recall. Well, guess who was right. I can still see the 4" of snow on my deck here in OP!
Thanks for the great forecasts!!

Hi Gary and team, First of all I want to say that you guys are by far the most accurate in the kansas city area I always watch you guys and trust your forecast whenever there is important weather. And also we have an inch of snow here in Harrisonville and it is really coming down!

Posted by: Brent at February 16, 2007 5:49 PM

Gary, It is exciting to watch your weather reports because you teach us so much about weather, you don't just dictate what will happen. Thank you for being emotional about weather, thats why I watch you!

Posted by: Allison at February 16, 2007 5:50 PM

Gary, don't worry about that caller...it was probably Katie Horner anyway. SERIOUSLY though, maybe you should be a little more thorough regarding what you say ON AIR. That caller (and many others) probably do not read this blog...and that's okay and understandable. But it leaves them with only a partial picture and if something happens that you did not say ON AIR but did say on the blog, then they're going to be calling and complaining. I realize you have only so much time ON AIR, but you may try to work a little more detail in. It seems I've watched you on TV doing the forecast and you'll say something generic or vague such as "we'll have to watch this though" and I will be thinking, "Ah, he's referring to what he talked in detail about on the blog." And, no, you shouldn't be an alarmist or scare people to up your ratings, but you could phrase it in a "hey, there's only a slight...I said slight...chance this could happen, but I want to mention it so you're not surprised" manner. Anyway, my two cents is that you should talk a little bit more in detail ON AIR like you do on the blog because not everyone is reading the blog. Oooh, another example...I think there has been a time or two when you have said ON AIR that something (temps., type of precip, etc.) could be "weird" and left it at that...as a reader of your blog, I will know exactly what you are talking about...but I imagine non-blog readers either don't listen and/or have no idea what you are talking about, so when the weirdness occurs, we blog readers know you were accurate, but the TV-only viewer probably thinks "well, he did not say this was going to happen, therefore, he is inaccurate." And your only defense is "well, I said 'weird' and I described on the blog what that weirdness was; so if you would have read the blog, then you would have known I had talked about this possibility." I'll shut up now.

Gary,

I left Hamilton, MO at 3:00 today, when I was almost to Cameron I noticed it was starting to snow, and called my husband to see how bad my drive would be on down to Kansas City. He said not good. He was right. It wasn't terrible, just stressful. We would have gone through downtown at about 4, so I detoured around 635 instead. Seemed like more snow out there. The highways were starting to get snowpacked, and from I-70 on down it was snowing heavier, and more snow on the roads. I-35 south was pretty slow all the way to Olathe. Nasty! My husband just called, he has a 10 minute drive, and it's already been 20 minutes and he's less than halfway home.

I would challenge every negative person who contacts you to try to do your job better. I cannot imagine how hard it must be to forecast the weather...you do an incredible job! Do you get everything right? No... Do I do everything right in my job? NO! I challenge anyone to come foreward to be the "perfect" person. You do an incredible job, Gary...but there is one main reason that to me, sets you apart from all the others - you obviously LOVE what you do! You give it all you have, come in when you know something important is going on, no matter what day of the week it is. For that reason, I know that you are worthy of my respect. You are honest with us, and give us all the possibilities - keep us well informed. Thank you for showing us that making a mistake is just part of life - and moving on with a smile!!! Have a WONDERFULLY SNOWY DAY!!!

Okay, I must fess up. I am a homeschooling mom of 3, so staying up until 10pm just doesn't happen too often (sad but true). So Tuesday night, I decided to check the station that has a 9pm newscast. It was a complete waste of time. There was NO snow forecasted at any time this week. YOU on the other hand have had snow in your forecast all along for tonight and flurries earlier in the week. I'll be sure to watch you at 5 or 6 since you don't have a 9pm newscast. Ignore those that say you can't forecast - they are watching the wrong channel!

It's obvious that you have been the most accurate. I appreciate you not just giving a temperature or precipiation forecast but all of the other possibilities and what your gut feelings are.
Weather forecasting is unusual in that, not only do you look at what is visible, but there are infinite pieces of data that are not visible to the naked eye nor to the computers.
Keep up your great work.

Now onward to the warmth for next week, a little precip along the way, and then whamo!, the 25th-March 1st is upon us. Keep up the good work, Michael/Topeka/Berryton

Mike,

You are finally going up on your seasonal snow totals.

Adam,

We will look at that storm next week. Right now the models are all over the place with it.

Gary,

You do a great job and people are dumb - enough said. Can you comment on how much snow you think we will get for the rest of the winter?
---------------------
Melissa,

As soon as March approaches it is tough to get snow, but we still average around 3 inches in March and with this pattern I can't imagine us not getting one more at least.

Round 1 just finished at 162nd & Nall (south OP): Temp up to 26.4 degrees. 1.6 inches of new snow to report.

The wind driven snow makes for an Arctic postcard outside! Waiting for Round 2...

Gary, I remember back in November (I think) you talking about a polar vortex around the Hudson Bay which proved true. You said this would set-up and be a dominant weather trait. While everyone else said much warmer than normal and little snow, you said 25 inches and very cold periods. I would say you have been very accurate. I live on the south side of the Metro and we are probably somewhere around 20 inches at least right now. I also remember you talking about this clipper early this week and bringing either rain or snow depending on temp. I liken you to Dick Vitale, who I like very much...the passion is not fake.

Dylan,

Thank you for noticing! This weather pattern set up in October and November according to the LRC. It just is fascinating.

Gary:

Good evening Sir!!! Hope things have calmed down a little for you-the BLOG tonight really shows how many people you have touched with your forecasting-kudos to you!!!

Had to venture out for a while this evening-got ot push some cars up Inverness here in Lawrence-just enough ice left on some roads and it came quick enough to make it real slick. I'm guessing we got 2 inches-maybe 2 1/2-like I said, that is the hardest it has snowed here since the December 05 storm-not the most just the hardest-man it was cool!!!!

What a fascinating event-just to our West, they are sitting in the upper 30's to lower 40's; the temp. here is actually rising a little bit as we still have south winds and there has actually been some stars shineing through. I noticed the front is getting closer-will be interesting to see/hear/feel the winds-this kind of has a mid March snow feel to it as it is just not that cold out right now.

Thanks again-hang in there-as the last BLOGGER stated you are an incredible asset to this area and you and the team do a tremendous job-the knowledge I have gained here this winter just screams that and the forecasting goes with out saying!!!! Have a great evening!!!

Bill,

Thanks. More snow is on the way. Lawrence could be on the edge, but I bet you get another 1/2" or so.

Once again this blog is turned into a personal debate instead of about weather. At least the other blog in town sticks to posting maps and explaining why it is snowing, instead of complaining and lookin for love from their bloggers.
-----------------------
Jim,

I didn't want the comments to turn into a love fest, but I must disagree with you. We are still all over this weather situation for tonight. Just the comments coming are about personal debate. But, I understand where you are coming from!!!!!!

1 inch of snow in Blue Springs. I would love another 2" overnight. 3" would put me back in business for the 4th time this year with my snow removal business. Keep up the great work Gary!
--------------------
David,

I doubt it and with the wind it may not accumulate normally, but maybe 3 inch to 6 inch drifts could happen.

Peeking at the 18Z maps, it appears the NAM and GFS want to put us in some freezing rain before the next band of snow arrives. Not sure I get that, as the temps seem to support snow at both low and higher levels. Could the warm air advection try to sneak in before the back end cools it down again?

BTW..maybe if that is the case we will hit todays forecasted temp yet! ;-)
-----------------------
Scott,

We are going to be within three. Amazing. This is the hidden part of our accurate forecast. I clearly stated last night that it could be 28 in the afternoon but 37 by 10 PM. Well, the temps are rising. Of course, I didn't predict the snow part.

This is my first time to blog!! That lady must be the same one who called you a few weeks back from Excelsior Springs and was watching the other channel!! My husband plows snow and you are the only one we believe!!!
Keep your chin up and think some more winter weather!!

Marlo,

Thanks and welcome to the blog. I am fine!

I switched from channel 9 to your forecast, because you were so much more accurate. I feel really sorry for anyone who has nothing better to do than call up a weather forecaster and whine!

I received an inch of snow from the front side of the clipper.. that brings my total (Blue Springs) for the year of 21 inches of snow and 1.5 of sleet and ice.

All I can say is that some people need to get a life if they have nothing better to do than call you guys and complain about the weather in Kansas! I've been telling my husband(who's from Ohio) for years, that if you don't like the weather in Kansas, just wait a minute. You are accurate at a very consistent rate and I trust your forecast over anyone's. Don't worry about complaints or even a few suprises- nobody ever said meteorology was an exact science.
---------------------
Colleen,

I am not worried about it. We will get the next one right!
