Precipitation Update
Radar trends are showing a large area of precipitation in north central Kansas. This has been some freezing rain, sleet, and snow. Freezing Rain Advisories and Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for part of central Kansas and Nebraska. This is an intense clipper system and it will bring some precipitation to the metro area later today and continue tonight. Be advised there could be a period of mixed precip. or some freezing rain even in the metro area. The current radar trends do show some pockets of precip. near KC...but most if not all of the precip. has been aloft.
I also calculated the departure from average temperatures for a few different time spans this season. The recent cold wave has really brought the winter temperatures back to average.
December 1 to February 15: +1.4
December 22 to February 15: +0.4
January 12 to February 15: -6.9
February 1-15: -11.7
Gary will be tracking the precipitation tonight at 5 & 6pm on NBC Action News and will also let everyone know how much snow to expect tonight!

Jeremy,
Is there any chance that we could see more than an inch of snow tonight in Lee's Summit? And another question, is it still looking like we could see a big storm at the end of the month? Keep up the great work!
Jacob

Jacob,
There is a chance...but more likely somwhere under an inch. There may be a mix later today into the evening. Some advisories are just off to our east now.

Is this clipper going to be a little more potent than first thought?
*********
Brian,
Not more potent...but if anything changes(like the track)...we could see more or less precip.

Radar echoes seem to indicate a strengthening storm headed for the south side of the metro. Are you anticipating any advisories here?
*********
Paul,
I'm guessing the NWS will keep a close eye on what form the precip. is falling when it gets a county or two closer to the metro and also look at temps. I would not rule out a Winter Weather Advisory. It would not take much light freezing rain to cause problems!

Jeremy, the radar does look nice...nothing like a little more wintery precip to improve this winter's letter grade.
Unrelatedly, I hope you and your family are adjusting well to KC and will be able to eventually get out (in above freezing temps) and enjoy all that the city has to offer. I also hope your new addition to the family is happy and healthy!
Now bring on some Alberta-clipper snow!
Jay
P.S. While standing in line at the grocery store checkout yesterday, I picked up a National Enquirer and a Farmers Almanac for you. ;-)
**********
Jay,
The family is doing well...but would love some warm weather to get out of the house for a while. Looks like by next week.
I hope you picked up one of those horoscope books for me too while in line!

Jeremy:
Sorry, just me again. I thought of one more thing (I know, scary me, thinking, and weather-bad combo lol) but surface observations show that places west of Salina are in the mid 40's whle we are in the mid 20's-I think the 850 temps. are showing a similar variance-I wonder if this may not dig a little further west and follow that gradient line?? It appears as though the surface low is moving more south than east and that earlier models had this in Minnesota by now-Just a random thought-thanks again-good luck this afternoon-could be somewhat interesting-fun to follow for sure!!!!
Bill still typing from Nebraska after being blown there by the wind in Lawrence
***********
Bill,
Windy is an understatement for today! WOW! Open areas are seeing a decent amount of blowing snow. Be careful traveling in areas that snow has blown across the road...these areas may be very slippery.
Most of the storm is entering the nowcasting phase. So radar trends are being monitored closely.

It is 2:23 and it just started snowing in Leavenworth

Jesse,
Thanks for the report. The steadiest of the precip. is still off to your west. That will arrive late this afternoon.

It has just started snowing again in St. Joe!
Today has been a neat day, before the snow had started falling there was already BLOWING SNOW at the college and it was even re-acumulating on some of the sidewalks!!
There have been near Hurricane force winds in Rapid City SD today with this system.
with the snow and blowing snow this in of itself may be a mini winter storm in of sorts!!!
Nick in (Very Windy, Snowy) St. Joe!

Nick,
Thanks for reporting the light snow. This is an intense clipper! We may see a 'mixed bag' of precip. down in KC later today.

follow up on last question, will we be under a winter weather avisory, or any ice problems here? Anne
*********
Anne,
We don't get a say in what advisories are issued. But if the NWS thinks roads may get slippery or that some snow accumulation is possible I could see a Winter Weather Advisory being issued. The advisories now reach to Lawrence.
