"Frozen J.C. Nichols fountain and update"
Good afternoon everyone,
Jeremy Nelson went out to the J.C. Nichols fountain on the Plaza yesterday and took this picture. I cropped it and cut it out to show the two features. Look below:

And, look below. The poor tulips are drooping. The trees around Kansas City have damage. Hopefully our beautiful spring will return sometime soon.

A strong storm will be approaching our region at the end of this week. How this storm affects us will be the focal point of our weathercasts beginning around Wednesday. Below you can see the GFS forecast for Friday evening. The surface low is over central Missouri, but where will it end up tracking? And, yes that is a snowstorm across areas just north of us. The severe weather potential will be dependent on where this surface low tracks? Right now it is just way to early to tell. In the mean time a series of waves moving into the plains on Tuesday into Wednesday will bring a chance of rain and thunderstorms. Some hail is possible if the thunderstorms materialize Tuesday into Wednesday.

Have a great day!

If it were to track further south would that mean snow for us? Im pretty new to weather and the blog so im not sure.

Dale,
As we move closer to May these storm systems won't have enough cold air with them to give us any chance of snow. But, right now there is still potential. And, yes, the way this storm is looking if it were to track further south then we could see snow. Most likely it won't track enough south. We will know more soon.

I SAW SNOW TODAY in St. Joe!
Walking to get lunch at the college it was a light rain/snow mix, which eventually turned to just sprinkles but when the snow was falling it was in decent sized flakes at the time, yes snow and dandylions at the same time neat!!!!!
It looks like the plants had a fight with a continental polar air mass and lost, well maybe they will recover or maybe rebloom? Not an expert in that field so not too sure.
Well hopefully we get some good precip. events with this coming set up !!!!
Looks like this Friday will be one of those days where there are winter weather advisories and warnings in one part of the plains, and severe weather watches in another part, all separated by the track of the low!
BTW in my meteo. class I got my first taste of isoplething! making contours of 3 hour pressure changes on a map of the US with readings from different stations. Not only that but we went over all of the abbreviated information that shows up on a weather station such as temp, dewpoint, skycover, wind speed/direction, and air pressure and precipitation!!
now I can understand the real time weather data more clearly when I look at it!
Nick in (cloudy, still cool) St. Joe!!!!

Nick,
Keep learning! And, I was hoping you would finally see that April snowflake even if it did come after Dallas and Atlanta had snow.

Ok, silly question but we have tball practice tomorrow at 630...are we going to get wet? Should we cancel?
When does the severe weather chance cut off or die off...
Thanks,
Todd
-------------------------
Todd,
We aren't expecting any severe weather Tuesday. The chance of rain will be there most of the day, but as usual wait until early tomorrow afternoon and see if the rain is anything significant.

Just say no to snow! How about some 70's. Peace, out. Greg

I am ready for warmer weather too Greg.

Reading your blogs when do you think we will have the cold snap again in April and while we are at it again in July. Thanks and keep up the GREAT work.
-------------------------
Steve,
A strong cold front will come through Friday night. This will likely help us drop below freezing again. And, then towards the end of the month I expect one more longer stretch.

"And, then towards the end of the month I expect one more longer stretch. "
A more longer stretch of below freezing or just colder than normal.
Thanks!

Hank,
Hopefully it will hover near or above freezing. It is getting later in the year, but I have concerns, only based on the theory. It isn't showing up yet.

Gary,
Is the April cold snap showing up on one of your models already? Or are you strictly using the LRC at this point? I looked at the GFS and it doesn't seem that cold... but I know how things can change. And I do believe in the LRC. It will be fun to watch for the cold air!

Sara,
It is just based on the theory at this moment as it isn't showing up yet. Hopefully, as May approaches the features will weaken.

Gary:
What happens to all the new leaves on the trees/shubs and budding plants that were "killed" this weekend with the hard freeze? Will they actually drop the dead leaves and start to grow new leaves and flowers once the weather warms up. My lilacs took a beating this weekend.
------------
Jenny,
I am not sure at this point. It will be interesting to see how this evolves.

If the storm on Friday were to track south of us, would we have a better chance of getting more rain? Thanks, Eswar
-------------
Eswar,
Not necessarily. There are too many factors in play with this storm. Now, as we see its eyes on Thursday then we can answer your question better. Right now, we must wait and see how it sets up.

Randy,
And thank you for buying one of my books. Have you had a chance to read it? Or at least look at the photography? It was nice meeting both of you too.

Hello Gary,
I have been answering these same questions for all of my customers for the last several days and thought I would share with your blog readers the same thoughts I have been sharing with them.
Most trees and shrubs that were affected by this late freeze will come out all right from the damage in the end. However, they will be stressed and will need extra care throughout the summer since much of their reserved will be used up sending out a secondary flush of growth.
Blooming plants (lilacs, hydrangeas, azaleas, rhododendrons, etc.) will likely not bloom this season or at least have drastically reduced blooming.
Perennials that were already up and growing, such as Hostas will grow new shoots - but likely be smaller for the entire year. A little extra fertilizer and water throughout the year will be helpful.
Good news, if you have sweetgum trees – the freeze will have zapped much of their fruit production this year – so very few sweet gum balls may fall from the trees. The same for crabapple trees also.
However, since this is such an out of the ordinary freeze with the Warm march and then late freeze – full effects won’t be known until we wait and see. A freeze towards the end of the month will be a very damaging one – two punch I’m afraid that will lead to much more die-back then this first freeze.
Mother Nature can be a cruel mother who teaches harsh lessons of patience to all her children.

Is there a "test" for Severe Thunderstorm Warnings? I received an email about a severe thunderstorm warning for JoCO, KS until 10:45am...winds up to 80 MPH and possible tornado??
-------------------
Christi,
The National Weather Service mistakenly issued that warning earlier today.
