Update on Crazy April Storm

Not only is this storm producing snow in April, but the accumulation forecast is odd due to the surface temperature layout. The track of the storm & atmosphere would suggest a widespread are of snow across eastern Kansas & western Missouri. However, the surface temperatures are playing havoc with our convential wisdom.

At 6 PM Emporia was 34° with 3/4 miles visibility in snow. Olathe was 36° with rain/snow mix. KCI was 42°, St. Joseph was 47°.

So, it is beginning to look like the snow in Emporia is the start of the event. We now believe that the rain will change to snow from southwest to northeast across up I-35. From KCI northward it will likely be too warm tonight, so either light rain or light rain mixed with snow is expected there. The best chances of accumulation will be from Emporia to KCI to Liberty to Marshall, MO south & east. So, snow south & rain north. That is very weird for any time of year. How much snow will stick is also a tough forecast as lows tonight will be 32-34° & current pavement temperatures are around 40°.

We think that 1-2", maybe 3" in spots are possible on grassy surfaces in the above mentioned areas. If it is going to stick to the roads, then it will have to some down hard for a long period of time to cool the pavement. The chance of this is low.

This is a complex storm & it is still not set in stone, but it is becoming clearer.

Oh by the way, if the southside of KC gets snow & KCI gets missed, doesn't that sound a lot like the November 30th storm? The LRC is still rolling along!

Hello team! Here in Kingsville, I just stepped out to very fat snow flakes and thunder!! The temperature is now down to 34 and dropping. Rain gauge is at .40.

I really hope next year's LRC brings the snow back to St. Joseph. This is the most disappointing winter ever. We have had good rains, but little snow. The bad thing is when it got cold there wasn't anything to protect the plants and trees (no snow cover). What was worse was this last freeze and the very bad damage it did to all the plants and trees.

Snowless in St. Joe.

Sorry, it's me again. Kingsville is now 90% snow, BIG flakes, and 10% sleet. The temperature is now down to 31!! Snow is sticking to my windows. Hoping for an inch or two of accumulations!!

Good evening.

We've had some thunder and now have heavy snow...we've had enough to make the grass white.

Sorry to bug you again, but in Kingsville, we now have lightning and thunder with all snow. The temp. is now down to 30 and accumulations are really starting to pick up. My satellite has gone out, so I have no clue what's going on except on this blog. I'll check back if needed.

Kim,

Thanks for the report. If you keep this up you might see 4"+.

hi
I just went outside and saw the biggest snowflakes I have seen in my life! There were as big as golf balls or bigger!

It has changed to all snow here at least for now...It seems it changed over earlier than expected?
I hope we get 6 inches..

Brent,

If the changeover occurs now, there will be a band of heavier wet snow. It will be narrow, but some spots MAY see 4"+ if the intensity continues.

Gary,

Thundersnows occur when you have intense rising motion in winter storms. The air is forced up so high that T-Storms form, but snow comes out of the them. We are now under the influence of a strong storm.

Hello!

I am in Warrensburg and at about 7 tonight we watched the precipitation change from rain to sleet to snow within about 10 minutes! It is very exciting and it is definitely accumulationg on the grass and cars! These are very big flakes and we are hearing rumbles of thunder!! :)

I have seen some big wet flakes mixing with rain in Blue Springs now.

The grass is white and its 32 degrees.
it could be a lot down here. you don't think we will see more than 4 inches, even though it started much earlier than expected?
