Finally on the sea!

Ahoy! After waking up unbelievably early and catching a small boat from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale, photojournalist Sarah Grile and I arrived on board the R/V Seward Johnson, Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution's 204-foot-long research ship.

There are about two dozen scientists aboard the ship for a two-week-long science expedition studying deep coral reefs off Florida's east coast, and we'll be tagging along all week.

It's exciting! We're about to get the tour -- although not the berth (the bunks, for all you landlubbers) , because most of the researchers are still asleep. They were up until 6 a.m. doing work. I thought waking up at 4:30 a.m. was bad!

I plan to write as often as possible -- using the ship's only computer with a satellite Internet connection. So ask me questions! I'll be happy to fill you in, along with filing daily reports for each day's newspaper. Look for my stories and Sarah's great photographs all this week!

Meanwhile, let's hope the seas stay calm and the sun shines!
