Starting pitcher Anthony Reyes will need a lot of help if he hopes to obtain the fifth starting spot in the rotation. Speculation has risen that Adam Wainwright, who sports a sub-1.00 earned-run average, has taken over as the second candidate to Sidney Ponson. Ponson has done nothing to suggest he can't handle the starting spot. It will be interesting to see if Wainwright pitches out of the bullpen during his next outing because he could begin the year as the Cardinals' long reliever if the team decides to go that route.
Mark Mulder sparkled in an outing against Triple-A hitters, though he didn't take too much from dazzling the opposing hitters.
Carmen Cali's numbers on Monday look really bad, but the left-hander could have easily gotten out of the inning with a little help from his defense.
