Hurt competition

John Rodriguez sustained a left shoulder strain on Friday at Tradition Field. Rodriguez was one of the remaining outfielders left in camp. He was believed to have had a spot on the team after John Gall and Chris Duncan were sent down earlier this week.

Rodriguez joined Larry Bigbie and Rick Ankiel as injured St. Louis outfielders. This means the Cardinals could bring one of the demoted outfielders back up. If he misses any time, it looks as if Skip Schumaker has a spot on the team.

Crunch time

There's just a few more roster spots available for the Cardinals. It looks as if it shakes down to this: Brian Falkenborg, Josh Hancock and Alan Benes are all options for the final bullpen spot. Adam Wainwright is in. Jeff Nelson is out.

On offense, Scott Spiezio, Aaron Miles, Hector Luna, Skip Schumaker and John Rodriguez are playing for four spots.

Here's a quick look at how they fared on Thursday:

Spiezio: 0-1
Luna: 0-0, BB, Error
Miles: 0-1
Schumaker: 0-2
Rodriguez: 1-3, BB, run

Pitching;
Falkenborg: 1 1/3 innings, 1 hit allowed, no runs and escapd a bases-loaded jam.

The little big Cardinal

By DUNN NEUGEBAUER
Nobody has been a hotter hitter lately than
Cardinal shortstop David Eckstein. Just over a week
ago, he was hitting a paltry .154. Since then,
however, he is 13 for his last 25 and has lifted his
average to .333.
On Wednesday against the Marlins, he singled to
open the game, then followed with a double in the
third. He finished the day 2-for-3 with a walk.
Manager Tony La Russa still has roster decisions to
make by this weekend. Any questions of who will be
playing shortstop, however, have been answered.

Important matters

I don't think I'm going out on a limb here, but I'd be really surprised if Adam Wainwright does not make this club. The kid has been lights out this spring, and if all were equal, he would have gotten a longer look as a starting pitcher. Things were not all equal with Sidney Ponson getting the starting nod. Ponson does have more experience than Wainwright, and he's a safer choice, as odd as that might sound. But Wainwright has not faltered in the bullpen, and that must be encouraging for manager Tony La Russa.

No cuts today

The Cardinals decided not to make any cuts on Monday. With the road trip set for Tuesday, it will probably take until Wednesday for the team to make the next set of trims.

There's a lot of debate in the press box as to which outfielders will make the team. Chris Duncan throws a wrench into everything. If Duncan makes the team, the Cardinals might not be able to keep John Rodriguez because they would need a better defensive outfielder off the bench, assuming So Taguchi gets the starting gig. Skip Schumaker and John Gall would then be the other outfielder. Rick Ankiel is another wild card, but the Cardinals might try to sneak him through waivers before he gets any more at-bats.

If you look at the Cardinals' lineup, it doesn't look nearly as ferocious as it did last season. Scott Rolen is still getting back to being a power player. They don't have much offensively at second base, and even though Juan Encarnacion is solid, he's not Reggie Sanders. It will be interesting to see how many runs this Cardinals' club scores.

A complicated chess match

By DUNN NEUGEBAUER
With only a week left, it’s time to trim the roster
for Manager Tony La Russa. Problem is, this year –
perhaps more than most – is going to be a tough one as
far as making the final decisions.
“It’s complicated,” he said. "The way the spots
work together, the fact that some people can do things
while other players can do others. It’s not easy to
figure, so we’re spending a lot of time with it.”
One decision is easy: with Larry Bigbie opening the
season on the DL, one more spot is open. Still, La
Russa cited that it wouldn’t necessarily be an
outfielder taking the spot.
“Four outfielders will get a lot of time,” he said.
“As far as the extra spot, we’ll look at who’s
pitching well, who’s playing well, etc.”

MVP not the goal

By DUNN NEUGEBAUER
Cardinals superstar Albert Pujols downplayed his
MVP award earned in 2005.
"If I could cut it into 25 or 30 pieces and give it
to my teammates and coaches I would," he said. "That's
not your ultimate goal; the goal is the ring."
Pujols has had a split spring training - he played
on the Dominican Republican team in the WBC that
advanced to the semifinals.
"We didn't play as well as we should have, but at
least we didn't go out in the first round."

Good joke

Apparently some time ago, a member of the St. Louis Cardinals' public relations staff pulled a solid prank on the good people of Roger Dean Stadium.

"Where do you want the fireworks to go?" the staff member asked. "He's here with his truck."

Not expecting a fireworks truck to arrive, the workers at the stadium frantically called one another to figure out what was going on with the truck and what they would do in case someone forgot about a potential gig.

A while later, the public relations person called back to ease the minds of the people. There was no truck in the first place.

On a side note, the Cardinals got a good start out of Jeff Suppan, who has struggled more than most this spring. He might end up being one of the big reasons why early spring training starts could be deemed meaningless in terms of statistics.

Ponson earns spot

Sidney Ponson earned the fifth starting spot in the rotation on Wednesday. Ponson was named the starter after Anthony Reyes was sent down. I had never met Ponson prior to this spring training, but he has seemed to fit in well with the clubhouse. He tells people how he feels and has no problem admitting his past mistakes. He truly seems as if he's turned over a new leaf.

Adam Wainwright the other contender for the fifth spot pitched well in his first true relief stint. His success there could force the Cardinals to make a trade because Wainwright has been light's out this spring. The Cardinals have six starting pitchers right now, though the team still has questions at second base where no one has taken the position by storm. This could be something that develops later in the season, or the Cardinals could keep all six in case of injury.

Reyes hurting

Starting pitcher Anthony Reyes will need a lot of help if he hopes to obtain the fifth starting spot in the rotation. Speculation has risen that Adam Wainwright, who sports a sub-1.00 earned-run average, has taken over as the second candidate to Sidney Ponson. Ponson has done nothing to suggest he can't handle the starting spot. It will be interesting to see if Wainwright pitches out of the bullpen during his next outing because he could begin the year as the Cardinals' long reliever if the team decides to go that route.

Mark Mulder sparkled in an outing against Triple-A hitters, though he didn't take too much from dazzling the opposing hitters.

Carmen Cali's numbers on Monday look really bad, but the left-hander could have easily gotten out of the inning with a little help from his defense.

It's his first time in the National League in his
long career, so non-roster invitee Jeff Nelson is
still getting the hang of carrying his bat around.
"I've been bunting every day and I'm getting better
at it. Still, it's only been against 60 mile-per-hour
pitches."
On the mound, the right-hander is making his case.
He's thrown 4 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up only
one hit. He's struck out five.

Solid Soup

Jeff Suppan had his best start of the spring today. The St. Louis Cardinals' starter tossed 4 1/3 innings allowing two runs. He struck out two and walked none, while allowing six hits. Suppan still is not at the point he would like to be, but he's getting there.

Suppan is one of the better guys to talk with in baseball, though sometimes he can be difficult to quote. That said, he does not have a problem giving reporters time. He also showed reporters a shoe insert that he wears in order to keep his toe from either jamming up or blistering. The insert has a little indent at the ball of his foot to make sure he can perform his mechanics without irritation.

Unknown commodity

Rick Ankiel's shot at making the opening day roster took a hit on Wednesday. One media report suggested that Ankiel might not be able to play in any Grapefruit League games. That's not good, especially since the club has already decided against keeping Chris Duncan at the major league level. Duncan was having a decent spring, but will spend some more time working on his play in the outfield. Ankiel, meanwhile, hasn't taken an at-bat in the Grapefruit League. The injury itself is not any worse than first reported. A second-degree strain is essentially a tear. That said, it has not healed as quickly as some would have hoped, and it will take two-to-four weeks to heal. Ankiel, meanwhile, has been in the dark -- or at least that's what he's saying. On Wednesday, he reportedly said that he was continuing his workouts.

This seems eerily similar to what the Cincinnati Reds did with outfielder Wily Mo Pena. Pena needed more at-bats, but the Reds had to keep him on the 25-man roster in 2004 or else risk losing him. Pena then had a hamstring injury, and the Reds kept him in Triple-A for as long as he was allowed during a "rehabilitation assignment". That might happen here with Ankiel, who probably needs a few more swings before coming to the majors.
