Good news for the Indian River Lagoon

[ Go Back ]

WASHINGTON - It may not be a victory but it's a step in the right direction for the Indian River Lagoon.
Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., said Monday that a full committee hearing on the Water Resources Development Act has been scheduled for March 15th before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources. The water legislation includes funding for the Indian River Lagoon and Everglades restoration projects.
“I am encouraged by the scheduling of this hearing," Martinez said. "It’s the first clear sign that we’re going to move WRDA forward in the 110th Session of Congress. Everglades is primary among our interests."
You may recall Congress has been unable to pass a water bill since 2000.
The previous legislation-- which contained more than $1.2 billion for the IRL-- passed through both chambers of Congress in July but was held up in a conference committee where House and Senate members attempted to work out their differences.
