Rep. Tim Mahoney, D-Palm Beach Gardens, had this to say after his colleague Rep. William Jefferson, D-La., was indicted Monday on federal charges of racketeering, money-laundering and soliciting more than $400,000 in bribes:
"Representatives must be held to a higher standard of ethics and integrity," Mahoney said. "The questionable and at times illegal behavior of some Members of Congress on both sides of the aisle shows that there is a clear need for more aggressive ethics enforcement and accountability.
"I again call on the Speaker and Minority Leader to listen to the wishes of the American people by establishing a nonpartisan independent ethics enforcement body as I have proposed," he added. "This indictment underscores the need to restore integrity to Congress. The American people will not have confidence in Congress until an independent ethics enforcement process is put in place."
