Tax relief questions starting

[ Go Back ]

The more I read the tax reform approved Thursday night by state Legislators, the more questions arise.
We need to know what the impacts on schools will be before any referendum is taken. And where is the relief for the businesses and homeowners who as new buyers or part time residents had been shouldering the bulk of tax increases?
There is an across the board cut this year, followed by a January referendum mostly directed at additional relief for homesteaded property owners.
The way I see it, the inequity that started the calls for tax relief will only grow. Neighbors in equally priced homes will continue to have unequal tax bills as they keep Save Our Homes or opt for the 75 percent exemption on the first $200,000 of a home's worth.
Business groups are saying this is a great package, for exempting the first $25,000 of tangible personal property tax, but something in me recalls the Roman Caesars opening the treasury to keep the masses and legionnaires in line.
